Buck Island Dedication Event 2011

JS Ranch

In May, 2011 ALC completed a conservation easement on the 5,940-acre JS Ranch near Redding, CA, protecting a working cattle ranch that has operated continuously for more than 150 years. The property provides habitat for elk, mule deer, mountain lions, and many special status and at-risk species, and includes more than six miles of perennial stream that have been proposed as critical habitat for threatened salmon species.

Buck Island 2011

Just 3 minutes by motorboat from the public boat ramp in Helena, Arkansas and two miles south of the St. Francis National Forest, Buck Island offers the rare taste of outdoor adventure immortalized by Mark Twain in his tales of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Buck Island is an ideal, user-friendly wilderness destination, with five miles of year-round hiking trails and large white sand beaches during lower water stages, typical from July through February. In public ownership, Buck Island can become the location for the growing number of people who wish to experience America' s Greatest River.

ALC has purchased Buck Island, a 1,500-acre forested island in Arkansas, and has been granted a conservation easement to ensure its preservation as a vital wildlife habitat and location for many wonderful recreational opportunities. Just 3 minutes by motorboat from the public boat ramp in Helena, AR and two miles south of the St. Francis National Forest, Buck Island offers the rare taste of outdoor adventure immortalized by Mark Twain in his tales of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. The island's natural setting offers something for any outdoors enthusiast including fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and boating when the season allows.

American Landscapes

While ALC primarily focuses its work on select geographic areas, it also responds to stellar conservation opportunities outside of its formal program boundaries. Past projects have ranged from southern California, to Wisconsin, to the native forests of Maine. Current projects are in western Montana and California's Napa Valley.

Mississippi River

Along the mighty Mississippi River, ALC is working to restore the ecological health of the river while also boosting local economies. In the Middle Mississippi, between St. Louis, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, ALC is conserving and restoring islands, side channels, natural floodplains, and wetlands that provide critical habitat for threatened and endangered species.

Great Basin

ALC has already conserved more than 80,000 acres in Nevada and along the Eastern Sierra. Our Great Basin Program aims to conserve additional open space, natural resources, critical habitat, and productive rangelands that remain at risk in the face of steady development pressure.

Central Valley and Foothills

The California Central Valley & Foothills Program region contains the 400-mile long Great Central Valley flanked by the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and Coastal ranges. ALC’s program aims to conserve lands with exceptional natural resources that contribute to the region’s quality of life. With 20,000 acres already conserved in the region, ALC has identified the Tulare Basin, Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and oak woodlands of the Sierra Nevada and Coastal Range as the program’s primary focus areas.

West Coast Trail

ALC Misc. Photos

Founded in 1990, American Land Conservancy is a national non-profit land conservation organization that conserves land for the benefit of people and wildlife. ALC works in partnership with communities, landowners, non-profit organizations, corporations, and public resource agencies to protect land and water resources through acquisition, conservation easements, restoration, and stewardship. ALC has secured hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, working farms and ranches, and other natural areas across the United States.
