EPA Chesapeake Bay Program

Baltimore County's Growing Home tree planting program will be highlighted at an announcement of $3.4 million in Chesapeake Bay Small Watershed Grants to help fund community-based projects that improve the condition of local watersheds. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation administers this grant program in cooperation with the U.S. EPA Chesapeake Bay Program. This year's grant program funds 34 projects in communities spanning all of the six Chesapeake Bay watershed states and the District of Columbia.

Towson, MD - Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe Hairston today announced the Baltimore County Public Schools Partner Network, a new program to strengthen links between schools and the commitment and resources of the business community and local organizations. An initiative of the County Executive's Regional Advisory Board for Business and Education, the program connects business and community partners directly with schools through a user-friendly website, (www.BCPS.org/PartnerNetwork). Companies can suggest a partnership that meets their company's outreach, volunteer and recruitment mission, or choose from requests submitted by school principals

Smith Recognizes Eastern Technical High School

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith recognized Eastern Technical High School for being named a National Blue Ribbon School. The Essex school is one of only five Maryland public schools to receive this award in 2010 and the first Baltimore County high school to achieve this honor. The school has been named one of the nation's top high schools by Newsweek magazine (three years in a row) and U.S. News and World Report (two years in a row). Eastern Tech will be honored at an awards ceremony November 15-16 in Washington, D.C. hosted by the U.S. Department of Education.

Smith Recognized Sudbrook Magnet Middle School Achievment

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will recognize Sudbrook Magnet Middle School for being honored with The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts National Schools of Distinction in Arts Education Award. The Pikesville school is one of only five schools in the nation to receive this award for the 2009-2010 school year. As a winning school, Sudbrook will receive a $2,000 prize to support its arts education programs and may be invited to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The school also will be honored during the AEMS Alliance Cultural Arts for Education Conference in the spring of 2011. The national award is presented to individual public schools that have ensured a creative educational environment for outstanding student achievement by providing high-quality opportunities for learning in and through the arts.

Jim Smith Presented the "County Cup" Trophy

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith presented the "County Cup" trophy to Harford County Executive David Craig in honor of the fact that Harford County resident Matt Klaschus was the first Marylander to cross the finish line at this year's Maryland Half-Marathon. Smith received the same trophy last year when a Monkton man was the first Marylander to cross the finish line. The race, held on May 23, in Timonium, attracted some 2,000 participants from the region and raised $200,000 for the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center.

Summer Reading Kick Off

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will announce the official start of the Baltimore County Public Library's (BCPL) Summer Reading Club (SRC). Along with Smith, Sneaks, the library system's mascot, will kick-off BCPL's SRC, which officially begins June 21 and ends August 14. The Club includes reading programs for individuals from birth through their teens. During the event, the County Executive will read to a class of fourth graders from Gunpowder Elementary. Annual Police Memorial Service

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will address members of the Baltimore County Police Department, family members, and County citizens at the annual Memorial Service honoring police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Smith will present an executive proclamation to Police Chief Jim Johnson and roses to members of the surviving families. Along with other elected officials and police personnel, the County Executive will assist the Baltimore County Police Department (BCPD) honor guard in placing a wreath in front of the county police monument that stands in Patriot Plaza.

Child Advocacy Center

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will recognize and congratulate The Baltimore County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) for achieving national accreditation from The National Children's Alliance. The Baltimore County Child Advocacy Center became fully accredited in October 2009 and views accreditation as an official validation of its hard work and commitment. Cedarmere Elementary Addition

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith and Baltimore County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston will officially "open" the new addition to Cedarmere Elementary School located at 17 Nicodemus Road in Reisterstown. Built at a cost of $1.8 million, the addition adds 8,666 square feet of space to Cedarmere, including two regular classrooms, two storage rooms, a faculty restroom, three kindergarten classrooms with storage areas, restrooms inside of classrooms, and a kitchen prep room. The new wing, which opened to students in January, increases the occupancy load by 112 students.

Dolfeild Bridge Opening

Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith will "cut the ribbon" to officially open the Dolfield Bridge on Dolfield Boulevard in Owings Mills on Tuesday, May 11. The Dolfield Boulevard Bridge marks the completion of the link between Red Run and Lakeside boulevards - an important piece of transportation infrastructure supporting the Owings Mills growth area. At 420 feet, it's the County's second longest bridge (just behind Wise Avenue at 426 feet). It is projected to carry 42,000 vehicles daily. The total cost was approximately $8 million - a figure representing not just construction, but engineering, permitting and mitigation of the sensitive natural area that the bridge spans.

Stimulus Grant
