14th Annual Welcome Summer Picnic

The School of the Cathedral hosted the Cathedral parish's 14th Annual Welcome Summer Picnic held on Tuesday June 7th on the grounds of the school. It was a nice way to celebrate the end of the school year and welcome summer. The school and parish community also had a chance to visit with Pep Perella, wear their Pep’s Pals T-shirts and enjoy a beautiful evening while the kids had fun with sand art, face-painting, corn hole games and great food, provided by Pep. Families, friends and staff recognized Pep’s years of service and presented him with a gift for his years of service to the school and parish community.

May Crowning 2011

We had our May Crowning on May 8th at the 9:15 Mass, followed by the first outdoor coffee of the season. Coffees are held at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen twice a month on the South Terrace after the 9:15 Mass, and we welcome families to help with set up, serving and clean up.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Class Mass

Photos from our Kindergarten and 1st grade Class Mass (the school and religious eduction program) March 6th. It was our final one for the 2010-11 school year. We thank all of our families who participated to help make this year so successful. We appreciate the time of Mrs. Maureen Costello and Mrs. Haley Franklin, Parish and School Development office for doing such a wonderful job this past year coordinating these special weekend Class Masses. Our Class Masses will begin again next September, 2011. We hope you will join us!

Archbishop O'Brien Visits Our School

On March 3rd, the School of the Cathedral was pleased to have Archbishop Edwin O’Brien for a formal visit. Students, faculty, staff and parents gathered in the gym to welcome His Excellency. They shared the school’s rich heritage and its founding stories in 1871 on Mulberry Street and in 1960 on Charles Street. Afterwards, the Archbishop was given a tour of the school and concluded his visit by blessing the “NEW” school sign. The School of the Cathedral proudly celebrates 140 years of Catholic Education.

CRS Meal Packaging Program

The Cathedral of Mary Our Queen collaborated with Catholic Relief Services to pilot a Meal Packaging Program to feed the hungry in Haiti and around the world. It was a TOTAL SUCCESS! The goal was to package 10,000 meals for the hungry around the globe. Nearly 200 people came and packaged 20,088 meals! "You are an amazing group," said Paddy Morton of the CMOQ Service Outreach Committee, "and the work you did today was a joy-filled prayer! Thank you for coming, and for sharing your time, and enthusiasm, and for making it so fun to do good for others. I hope this event made you all feel as proud as I did to be a part of our Cathedral community." Sarah from Catholic Relief Services was very impressed. CRS is going to use the Cathedral as a pilot parish to see how effective parishes can be in direct support of CRS mission beyond contributions.

Pet Blessings

We had 60 dogs, cats, and other assorted animals come to the Cathedral to be blessed at our Pet Blessing ceremony, held in honor of the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4).

Welcome Summer Picnic 2010

Cathedral families and friends enjoyed an evening of fun at the 13th annual Welcome Summer Picnic on Thursday June 3, 2010 at the school. Thunderstorms rolled in right before the start of the event, which made our guests move inside for shelter. Happily, the sun did come out, so they were able to enjoy part of the evening outside too. Children could get their face painted, play games and listen to music by DJ Dave Sandler. All guests got to try tasty cotton candy and freshly popped popcorn. Delicious pit beef, grilled chicken and salads were prepared by Pepper’s Catering. This was a great way to say farewell to school friends and Welcome Summer! Many thanks to chairs and committee: Janet Stamas, Paula Harmon, Ellie Kenny and Peggy Illardo.

Archbishop Borders' Funeral

Archbishop William D. Borders, the 13th Archbishop of Baltimore 1974-1989, died peacefully on April 19, 2010, at the age of 96. “Archbishop Borders was a man of deep faith, great humility and great love for God, the Church and this Archdiocese,” Archbishop Edwin O’Brien said. “As a result, he was universally loved by the people of this local Church, by his brother bishops and priests, and by all who were blessed to call him Archbishop, Father, teacher, brother and friend."

Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long 2009

We gathered on the Plaza in front of the Cathedral at 7pm for the Tree Lighting, Blessing, and a Christmas Carol. Then we entered the church for a sing-a-long. Afterwards we fellowshipped in the Parish Center with hot chocolate and cookies.

Cathedral Housing Committee

In 1988, a group of Cathedral parishioners serving on what was then called the Parish and Community Relations Committee saw homelessness and vacant houses in nearby neighborhoods and decided to do something about it.

Pipe Organ of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen

At the time it was built for the dedication of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in 1959, it was the largest organ in the United States, and it still remains the largest pipe organ in Maryland. It's actually two organs, the main one being located in the Choir Gallery. The other is in the back of the sanctuary to the right of the altar. They can be played independently, at the same time, or one person can play both organs from either console.
