In the beautiful little town of Schlitz, among hills and forests in Vogelsberg County, Hessen, Germany...
... the tiny, award-winning Schlitz Destillery has been in operation since 1585.
It is watched over by the ancient Vorderburg castle, the church and the Hinterturm watchtower, (here decorated for Christmas)...
On May 22, 2009, brewer Niels Jørn Thomsen delivered the first batch of Double Hop ale from his tiny brewery to distiller Gottfried Ickler of the Schlitzer Destillerie, for distillation.
Hr. Ickler unloading the beer... it's all in his very capable hands now!
The still in which the first step of the distillation process took place. It takes an entire day to distill 600 liters of 8.2% beer to approx. 100 liters of 40% (80 proof) Bierbrand.
The result: is delcicious. Mother and daughter - Double Hop ale and Humlegejst. (Spirit of Hops)
Skål, Prost, Cheers!
