You can see the Stages of compost and it really works ! All kinds of kitchen waste fresh veg peels , to rotten eggs , to fish bones , to old sambar. After doing waste segregation and composting, we monitored the amount and source of plastic waste that enters our home and then went on to do shopping with jute bags . We do not buy vegetables from big shops (they make us wrap everything in a plastic cover) - we buy from small veg vendor only. The plastic is segregated and given to KK School - they sell pastic and generate money for the eco club whic goes to tree maintenance. eWaste is kept separately and given to Saahas
Khambha - 3 Layered pot all the pots are detachable. Fresh waste is put in the topmost pot mixed with dried leaves or shreaded newspaper. Once it is 3/4th full, it is shifted to the middle one - the perforations allow air flow and one needs to rake it once in 3- 4 days.. it allows the aerobic bacteria to take over and compost . This is a leaveit pot. I bought this after the first round of composting experiment was done- My first composting was not a great success, but learned lot of lessons like how to manage the water content , how to manage maggots by putting chilli powder and how one can use accelerator . Neem powder works very well to keep insects away ..
Seiving the compost . There will be bigger peices like the seeds, coconut husk ..which takes longer to compost.. those are taken out and added back into the khambha
Post seiving - one gets a fine powder.. once water is managed, it doesn't smell. Add leaves or dried newspaper to manage the water content -the powder you see in the picture is like mud.. 'Mannininda mannige' And daily dump "buys" compost from you for 4 ruppees a Kg !
Like the feel of it.. it feels and smells like mud..
