This is Oil Beach, the first ``beach'' that we clean.
The second beach we clean is Jefferson Cove. It can only be reached at low tide.
Beach Clean 2010 started a bit damp with sheets of rain. Here is our camp next to the ocean.
Karel and John looking a bit damp.
Eli with her tire.
Doete hikes a load on her back to the trailhead.
Karel and the drum, the !$&! drum.
Jake and the !&$ drum, about an hour later...
This year, a group also cleaned across the Hoh River. Looks like they got quite a load.
Back at camp, a bonfire is started, the rain subsides, and everyone dries out.
John at the cook's table.
Trash picker comtemplates green bean.
Tami found a real message in a bottle.
The night's entertainment: the message in a bottle!
Drum roll please......
The message! Ok, it says "Denis O., L/V Liberty, Chile, and then has a NYC P.O box address, HAPPY NEW YEAR 2001" Wow!
How our bottle could go from Chile to WA: Pacific Ocean drift currents with some possible bottle trajectories overlaid.
The tents were placed well above high tide, but winds came in with high waves. We woke at 2:30am to huge waves crashing and lapping the tent sides.
The waves were tossing the log that the Sargent boys' tent was tied to and lapping the edge of their tent. I don't think they woke up, but John was on watch.
Sunday morning dawns dry with even signs of blue poking through.
The Zikans about to head off to soccer games back in Seattle. Karel has his eyes closed as he spent the night driving 10hrs to retrieve the spare car keys after Eli lost her keys.
Yes, it's weak but blue sky is poking through.
Three beach cleaners.
Big pack and beach.
Hoh River in sun(!)
3 beach cleaners, take 2. Imagine rolling a huge heavy drum up this beach!
Wildlife! Also seen on the trip, eagles and otters.
Beach Clean 2010's haul. Actually there was more because one party hauled 3 bags earlier and the rest of the group brought their bags after us.
Beach Clean 2010 had one more bit of "excitement'' to throw our way: Mike's truck had a flat.
Driving out, the sun was shining and Mt. Olympus was in view.
