Apishapa Canyon 09/22/2007
One of Colorado's Wild Places.
Apishapa Canyon is a truly wild and magical place, first inhabited by native people's during the Apishapa age, roughly 1000 years ago. Ancient Ponderosa Pine, likely over 200 years old from a time when the climate was cooler and wetter, mix with rare barrel cactus and other plant species unique to the canyon and others like in southeastern Colorado.
Bighorn Sheep inhabit various parts of the canyon along with a mountain lion or two, a few elk and deer and plenty of rabits. Riparian habitat includes the Canyon bottoms where small fish and frogs live in permanent water pools.
