Mr. Smith's 5th grade class. Todd Thrush Rachelle Kuhl Kohnen OMG! LOVE this picture! It seems I should be in it, but for some reason I'm not. Whose classroom is this? Mrs. Staples 4th grade? 5th grade at the Big School? Jon: I DID NOT know about Todd and I'm so saddened to hear the news, even today! He was SO nice to me in school! :( Wow I recognize so many of these faces and remember first names. Chan, Ron, Tommy, Herbie... Is that Liz in the front?
Jonathan Wilson My good friend Todd Thrush, who passed away in a logging accident just a few years after our graduation hosted a Japanese exchange student and shared some culture with the class. Susan Krebs also commented on Jonathan Wilson's photo. Susan wrote: "Mr. Smith...thank you so much for all the wonderful pictures. Funny how it just seems like yesterday, where does time go? The world needs more teachers like you." Aimee Hempy De La Cruz yes thank you so much. We had very little pictures from when we were in grade school. Maybe a few for each of us 3 girls. So it is priceless to find these. Did you photograph for the school or go every year and do one project? (answer: I taught at the school for 33 years. Always had a camera ready.)

Thank goodness for phone cameras which I'm trying my hardest to take pix with.
Rachelle Kuhl Kohnen also commented on Larry Smith's photos. Rachelle wrote: "Mr. Smith: I was in the same grade as Todd & Jon. But, I was in Mrs. Phillips' class. However, I DID have you for math (which I wasn't good at). :( I went to J'ville elem for 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th grades, then moved away a year and returned to McLaughlin for 7th and 8th. So, all these faces were immediately familiar and the names came rushing back. Thank you so much for your pictures... I wonder if you knew at the time you were taking them, that they would touch so many people! Just awesome! "

My twin brother, Larry Smith, has been teaching school since 1965...almost 45 years. He is still subbing. Over those years he took photos of his students and their activities. He has now scanned in the negatives, photos and slides from those years. He has organized the 6,460 photos into 27 Picasa albums. He hopes his former students will find these albums after he posts them on http://www.jvwoodlands.org To contact Larry Smith: jvsmith@clearwire.net To contact Lloyd Smith: Lsmithtwin@comcast.net

August 22 Jeff Andrews Jonathan that link is phenomenal! You guys are so fortunate to have such a detailed photographic accounting of your school. Would that every teacher or school was as thoughtful. I didn't even go to that school and I've been pouring over it for an hour. So awesome! August 22 Jonathan Wilson Aimee, Jeff - Larry is phenomenal and the care he has for his students is amazing. I visit Jacksonville every couple of years and he always takes time to have coffee with me. I am always encouraged. August 22 Aimee Hempy De La Cruz yes Jeff looking at those pix reminds me of That 70's Show...the clothes and hairstyles so much copied. Even now my son's hair is that shaggy long- of course that's in style now. Cool to see where it all began. And yes so very rare to have pictures like that back then. Nobody walked around w/cameras in their phones like they do now. Luckily I had a camera when I was 12 and took some one day at school but I don't remember anyone in school taking pictures.
August 22 Jonathan Wilson Brian has a camera around his neck - Mr. Smith taught us photography and let us develop our own negatives in the darkroom at school. I loved it, but also had a very hard time not losing the camera he loaned me. August 22 Paige Lanfear-Holt I always wanted to be apart of learning to use a camera back then. Amy I found you in a pic yesterday in a group where Mrs. Boening was playing guitar and singing to the whole school! I plan on tagging it and hopefully printing it. August 23 Aimee Hempy De La Cruz ya that would be a great photo- I remember her being pregnant and that was the first one and only person for many yrs I had ever seen pg. Being the youngest I never saw my mom pg. And for some reason never did see any pg women around Jville! Wasn't her name Jane? August 23 Paige Lanfear-Holt Yes her name is Jane. i still have the wedding announcement some where.

Don Yule showing off his lazy eye. Hey Mr. Smith, Good to hear from you! I live out towards Rogue River and I work at ACCESS helping people with energy assistance. I was in the breakroom and just happened to look down at a paper and there I was. I hope other students like myself have found this site, for me that year was special you know one of those years they make movies about. But I think you helped make a lot of kids lives special, you are just that kind of a person and that kind of a teacher. My phone # is 541-855-2034 please feel free to call me anytime. Rick was the first kid to show up with Big Hair in 1969. Transferred into my class from another school. He caused a great sensation. Girls' hair he was told. But he stuck with the long hair and it started a revolution among boys and their hair styles. Nice kid. Now nobody would even notice.
Eric - Rick Was told his hair was too long, but he hung onto it. With a year most boys had hair as long or longer. 1968
