Back in the early 80s the kids were still allowed to dress up for Halloween for our afternoon parties. Right after lunch Donny approached my desk with a sack in his hand and told me rather sheepishly that he had brought a Superboy costume to wear. It had been made by his mother. But Donny was unsure whether he wanted to wear it or not. I told him he could go to the restroom and change if he wanted. A few minutes later he was back with his cape wrapped around him. Donny soon began playing the part of Superboy and completly forgot his shyness. He looked so authentic I wanted to capture him "leaping" from tall buildings. I took Donny up to the roof of the library, but every pose I tried looked contrived. I then realized we needed wind! So I strung a 100 feet of cord up to the roof and borrowed a fan from the school office. The billowing of his cape made the photo come alive. Donny even had the proper curl over his forehead!

Mike Lawrence and Bill Erickson. Mike's mother's family at one time lived in the 1892 RRVRR train depot. The building used to face Oregon Street, but was turned 90 degrees when the post office was built in the early 70s. At the time this photo was taken, the kitchen sink was still in place. The building was later remodeled and has become Jacksonville's information Center for the Chamber. Photo taken April 1971.
