David L. Bateham of Corvallis died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center. He was 51. April 23, 1960 — Dec. 11, 2011 Dave was born in Long Beach, Calif., to Richard and Lois Bateham. After earning an American studies degree from Oregon State University in 1988, Dave worked as a process technician at Hewlett-Packard Co. since 1992. From 1979 to 1983, he served in the U.S. Air Force. From the mid-1980s through the early 1990s, Dave gave his heart and soul to the Oregon volleyball scene, acting as player, coach, official and tournament director. He was an assistant to Guy Enriques for an OSU women’s volleyball squad that eventually went on to finish third in the Pac-10, the highest finish ever for an OSU team.
Dave competed in multi-sport events, including the first 10 Beaver Freezer triathlons. In the last 15 years of his life, Dave gave a lot to the running community. His philosophy, “You have to slow down to get faster,” stemmed from many ultras, countless gels, and a little bit of puke. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Madrid; children, Erik and Nicole Bateham; sister, Sue Bess; and mother, Lois Bateham of Jacksonville.
David Bateham- Corvallis, OR In the Winter of 2009 I started having some breathing issues on some of my runs. It would always happen very early (1st 5 minutes) and once it went away I was fine for the rest of my run. In March I actually blacked out, briefly, then got up and ran for another 15 miles. The breathing issue followed me all spring and summer, but I was able to do plenty of races (4 mile in Feb, 36 mile in April, 100K in May, paced 50 miles in June, 10K in June, 50K in early July). The week after the 50K I ran in the All-Comers meet at CHS. Ran the 800 with no problem, but on the third lap of the mile I started to have breathing issues, my legs shut down and I stepped of the track and passed out. I was only out for a few seconds and was disorientated for a few more minutes, but decided that I needed to get it checked out.
I made an appointment to see my PCP and it was scheduled for early August. In late July I ran the PCT 50 miler with my son and we had a great time and pushed really hard the last 10 miles. The breathing issue followed me all spring and summer, but I was able to do plenty of races (4 mile in Feb, 36 mile in April, 100K in May, paced 50 miles in June, 10K in June, 50K in early July) The week after the 50K I ran in the All-Comers meet at CHS.
At the doctor's appointment the PCP told me it was “Exercise Induced Asthma”. I didn’t buy it, so I scheduled an echo-cardiogram. The echo happened later that same week and I was told I would hear the results from my PCP, so off I went. In August I joined a group for a one day run around Mt. Hood (really fun) and did the Where’s Waldo 100K. End of August and still no word from the PCP. I had signed up for a 100 mile run that was on Sept 18th, so on Sept 7th or 8th I called the PCP and asked what happened with the echo results. He finally called me back and said that they had put the results directly in my file and that he hadn’t reviewed them. The results showed mild Aortic Stenosis caused by a congenital valve defect called a Bicuspid Aortic Valve.
He said it wasn’t anything to worry about and we should watch it over the next 10 years. I called him back the next morning and said that I wanted to see the results of the echo and to see a cardiologist right away to determine if I should go through with the 100 mile race. I went to see the cardiologist and he agreed that it was mild stenosis. He scheduled another test and said we could talk later. So, I dropped from the 100 mile race, did the other test and waited for my follow up. I called around and found a cardiologist in Eugene who happened to be in the same clinic as one of the top Heart Surgeons in the country, so I made an appointment with him. The Cardio in Eugene looked at the results and wanted me to do another Echo, which happened right there. He called me later that afternoon and suggested that we move toward surgery and that he was referring me to the surgeon that I wanted to see.
I met the surgeon in late October and we discussed valve options ( I chose biological) and surgery options ( I wanted a minimal invasive technique that I had heard he was doing). He said that we could do the minimal invasive if my veins and arteries were “clean” (Which a subsequent angiogram showed to be true). After the angiogram hurdle was cleared I scheduled my surgery and waited. (Though I did run the Mac 15K really easy). December 7th arrived quickly. The surgery went well, I woke up in ICU with tubes coming out of everything. I have a 3 inch incision, and only half of a cracked sternum. I spent the night in ICU as standard measure and was moved into recovery on the 8th. I went for my first walk on the night of the 8th and by the 10th was going stir crazy. Discharged on the 11th and have spent the last week recovering slowly. The next week will have some more improvement, but I plan on taking it real easy until I start rehab and then really start training for the summer season.
David Bateham - upper left Sixth grade at Jacksonville School 1971/72 The prognosis is good, but slightly unknown. They don’t get a lot fit people in the cardiac ward so it was kind of fun. The surgeon’s assistant came down and thanked me for coming to them. He said it is fun to do surgery on someone who is fit and motivated. (This was written in December 2010)
David Bateham's fifth grade class at Jacksonville School with Mr. Smith 1970/71 David is upper row - right What has happened since: (May 2011) My recovery went well and I started running 6 weeks post surgery. By 10 weeks I was able to run 10 miles and raced a couple of 10Ks (6 minutes slower than presurgery times). I had entered a sprint triathlon and was in decent shape for it. The triathlon would be at the 16 week mark. The week before the Tri I came down with an eye lid infection and was feeling kind of sluggish. I did a round of antibiotics and skipped the tri. In Mid-April was still feeling a little sluggish, but then came down chills and fever. I went to my PCP (new one) and she started started doing tests and treated me for pneumonia. A month went by and I was not getting better. A blood bacteria test in Mid-May showed that I had endocarditis and off to the hospital I went. They quickly determined that the bacteria had almost destroyed my new valve and that it would need to be replaced.

I stroked on the table causing my family quite the scare, and spent three days in ICU. I lost some use of my left hand, but I am slowly regaining more control. I am going forward a little slower this time, but plan on doing some races in 2012.

RYAN BENNETT BEAVERS Ryan Bennett Beavers, age 25, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011. He was born February 8, 1986, in Tacoma, Wash. Soon after he was born, his family returned to Southern Oregon where he attended Medford schools, graduating from South Medford High School in 2004. While in high school, Ryan developed a love for cars and drawing. He participated in many themed assemblies with friends, and was crowned Mr. Panther in 2004. Before Ryan's death, he, with his friend and business partner, started a company called "Mantiques", where they created unique furniture pieces for sale. He also continued to practice his love of drawing on a daily basis.
Ryan is survived by his parents, Brad and Ren Beavers, of Jacksonville, Ore.; brother, Chris Beavers; and sister-in-law, Andrea; both of Portland, Ore.; grandparents, John and Roberta Rier; and grandfather, Herb Beavers; all of Jacksonville, Ore. I was shocked to hear about Ryan this morning (my time, over here in the Middle East).I hadn't spoken to him in years, but I have such fond memories of us as kids. I used to go over to his house ALL the time. We watched movies (we thought Tombstone was awesome), played poker with candy (with Tombstone as our inspiration to do so) and just goofed off all the time. He had such a great sense of humor and was a real friend to me. Recently, before I moved, I went through some pictures of mine and found some of my 13th birthday, where he, Nick Moore, Joe Fleming, Tyler Sparks and Tyler King were all there bowling with me. I was such a tomboy. :) Those are good memories. Next time you see his folks, tell them that they are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish I could be there to attend the funeral, but...I'll be thinking of him, his friends and family over here."

Becky Gilley Murdered by her brother in 1984 Photo taken in 1983
Becky Gilley was murdered by her brother, April 22, 1984 August 22, 2008 By Bill Varble Mail Tribune On the night she was killed in her family's Medford home in 1984, 11-year-old Becky Gilley asked two different friends if she could spend the night with them, but her mother and father refused to allow it. Hours later, along with her parents, Becky was killed by her brother. Amber Shields and Becky Kakouris, both now 35, were classmates and friends of Becky Gilley in the fifth grade at Jacksonville Elementary School in April 1984. The girls, all 11 years old, went on field trips and attended birthday parties. They went to Crater Lake together. On the night of April 26, the girls were in a spring musical program together. It started at 7 p.m. at the school. "Becky had kind of a starring role," Shields remembers. "I was in the chorus."
Rebecca Head akouris, Central Point, left, Amber Smith Shields, Jacksonville, discuss their friendship with Becky Gilley at Jacksonville Elementary School in the 1980's. Becky sang "Eat It," a spoof by Weird Al Yankovic of Michael Jackson's "Beat It." She had an outgoing personality and star quality, the women remember. After the show, Amber and Becky Gilley thought a sleepover would be fun. Amber asked her father, Larry Smith, of Jacksonville, who was also a teacher at the school. "It was a Thursday night," says Shields, now a labor and delivery nurse at Rogue Valley Medical Center. "He said maybe another time." Both women also remember Becky asking another classmate, Teri Moody, if she could spend the night with her. But the Gilleys said no. Kakouris says they said it was because Becky hadn't cleaned her room. "We both remember that," Kakouris says, "clear as day."
Becky Gilley was murdered by her brother, April 22, 1984 It struck both girls that Becky very much wanted to spend the night someplace other than home. Smith remembers looking at his watch. It was already 8:30, and it was a school night. "How about inviting her over on the weekend?" he said. For Becky Gilley, the weekend would never come. A little after midnight, Billy Gilley Jr., who had a long history of abuse at the hands of his father, Bill, beat Bill and Linda Gilley to death where they slept with an aluminum baseball bat. Linda was in bed, Bill on a couch. Billy had put Becky in the upstairs room of their sister Jody, who was 16, and told her to keep Becky there. But Jody didn't, and Becky went downstairs and surprised Billy, who hit her in the head with the bat. Becky died two days later without regaining consciousness.
Rebecca Head Kakouris, Central Point, left, Amber Smith Shields, Jacksonville, discuss their friendship with Becky Gilley at Jacksonville Elementary School in the 1980's If Becky Gilley's parents were disciplining her over the condition of her room, it was one of two punishment issues in the Gilley home that day. Jody Gilley told Kathryn Harrison, the author of "While They Slept," a new book about the murders, that she had skipped school that day, and that there was heightened tension in the house over her punishment when the family sat down for dinner at 6 p.m. The entire family attended the show. Jody described Becky's performance to Harrison as "a fabulous comedic turn." "She was funny," Shields says. "She was happy," Kakouris says. "Bubbly." Shields went out of town with a church group that weekend without hearing about the murders. Becky died Sunday, and Jacksonville children were told Monday by teachers. Amber was told Sunday by her parents.
Becky Gilley was murdered by her brother, April 22, 1984 Shields says Becky Gilley often visited in her home, but she was not allowed to enter the Gilley home. It was known that the family struggled to make ends meet, but not that there was physical abuse. Bill Gilley used to punch and demean Billy and tie him to a tractor wheel and beat him with a rubber hose. Jody sought refuge in books and dreamed of escaping the dysfunctional family. Jody said to Harrison that Becky had not suffered the kind of treatment she and her brother had from their parents, but then she was not yet an adolescent when she died. "She never wore name-brand anything," Shields says. "Her hair was kind of curly and unkept." She remembers that one year Becky gave her a string of brass bells for her birthday. She thought it was an odd gift. She hung them outside her window, where they stayed for a long time. "From what I remember her dad was an alcoholic," she says. "I knew her life wasn't easy."
Rebecca Head Kakouris, Central Point, left, Amber Smith Shields, Jacksonville, discuss their friendship with Becky Gilley at Jacksonville Elementary School in the 1980's "We had no hint there was anything going on in that house," Smith says. "She sat in the classroom. She had a great personality." Smith remembers the empty chair in a classroom the Monday after the murders, and shock and horror that a girl had been killed in her home. "There were no grief counselors then," he says. "You just toughed it out." A lilac was planted in Becky's name at the school. It is a spindly thing and it has been the subject of some not-so-gentle pruning. There is a commemorative plaque on the ground in the name of Becky Jean Gilley. Shields remembers thinking, "If only she was somewhere else."

Jennifer Collegio (Varney) was among five soldiers killed during a helicopter test flight in 1986 near Ft. Hood in Texas. Her family moved to Jacksonville from Brooklyn in 1980. She complained in class "about having nothing to do but pull weeds." The kids loved her Brooklyn accent and often good naturedly referred to her as "Brooklyn". In class she was always bright and smiling. She was such a dynamic person. Flying was a lifelong passion of hers. She became a helicopter pilot after entering the army in 1991 and married a fellow pilot. Jennifer, a 1st Lt., was flying the craft when it broke up in flight about 40 miles north of Austin. It just made bang, and then fell apart.

Kyle Ross - killed in a car accident - June 200 Kyle lit up every room that he entered. Teens' deaths give us pause June 22, 2006 Community joins in grief after three killed in crash There undoubtedly were many pointed conversations in the past two days between parents and young drivers in the wake of the tragic deaths of three teenage boys in a car crash in the Applegate. Those chances to offer those admonitions may be the only positives we can cling to as we try to comprehend how three young men, so full of life, could be gone so suddenly. The accident early Tuesday morning on Highway 238 claimed the lives of Kyle Ross, David Bergin and Jonathan Thibeault. All three were 18 and all had graduated from South Medford High School just weeks before. An investigation into the wreck continues. The results may provide us with more lessons to pass on to our kids, but that sort of thing seems lost in the haze of sorrow that has descended on the trio's families, friends and classmates.
We know teenage boys seem invincible, at least to themselves. They are full of bluff and bravado, taking risks not because they wish to tempt death, but because they have no reason to think death could be just around the corner. Sometimes they're obnoxious, even intimidating, but most are just big kids still feeling their way toward the life that lies before them. Kyle, David and Jonathan were by all accounts good kids. ; soccer players, snowboarders, outdoor lovers, friends and sons. They were, in the telling word offered by their high school principal, "smilers." We grieve with their families and their friends and hope they will remember those smiles as they move forward. The rest of us will hug our kids a bit tighter today, give them fatherly and motherly advice and offer our own silent prayers for their safe passage around those corners that lie ahead in their lives.
Mark Austad was friends with all three South Medford High School graduates killed Tuesday in a car crash at Highway 238 near Ruch. Knowing he wouldn't be able to attend the individual funerals of David Bergin, Kyle Ross and Jonathan Thibeault, Austad said he was comforted to know he could attend a community memorial Sunday meant to honor all three. "I loved them all," said Austad, also a recent South Medford graduate. "I've known David all through elementary school." Just 10 days after receiving their diplomas, the three teens died when Ross lost control of his 1994 BMW 740 sedan while traveling an estimated 80 mph on Highway 238. The 18-year-olds were reportedly camping and swimming with friends. Another teenager, Trevor Marion, also 18, of Jacksonville, who was traveling with the boys in a separate vehicle, was cited for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, according to Oregon State Police.
