Garden City Rhythmic Gymnastics Invitational

3rd Annual Garden City Rhythmic Gymnastics Invitational Rhythmic gymnasts from Victoria, Comox, Nanaimo, Richmond, Delta and Surrey competed at Shoreline School on March 6th. It was a fun day of competition and a great opportunity for our Victoria gymnasts to strut their stuff.

Thank you Toyota Canada!

Special Olympics says Thanks to Toyota Canada – February 26th Winter Provincial Games athletes took over the showroom on at the Metro Lexus Toyota dealership for a unique event combining a celebration, a send-off and a round of sincere thanks to a great supporter. Toyota Canada has generously donated $5000 to the Victoria Local in support of our programs. In attendance at the event was General Manager, Dennis Andrews and two-time Olympian Simon Whitfield. Following words of encouragement from Dennis and Simon everyone enjoyed a piece of cake.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Gym-A-Thon 2010

On December 13th, 2010 our Special Olympics BC Victoria rhythmic gymnasts and coaches held their very first Gym-A-Thon fundraiser. Athletes and coaches had to perform skills in 10 different stations to earn their pledges.These stations included; sassy snakes, singing spirals, my favourite dance move, a routine of their choice, present toss and several more. Once the gymnasts had completed their skills they took a seat while their coaches ran through the stations. Now that’s entertainment! At the end of the evening over $3000 had been raised. Prizes were awarded to the top athlete fundraisers.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Snowflake Event 2010

On December 18th, 2010 our Special Olympics BC Victoria Rhythmic Gymnasts were once again invited to participate in the annual Snowflake event hosted by the Victoria Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Maggie Tennant, Rosalyn Jameson, Marjan Ishani, Alison McKee, Desiree Grubell, Christina Brooks, Kerry Anne Heywood, Carol Anne Stocker, Amber Yokimas and Deanna Hellener participated in the event by performing routines in hoop, rope, ribbon, ball and clubs. Following their performances Barb Bishop of the Victoria Rhythmic Gymnastics Club presented them with medals and a critique. The Snowflake event was held at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE).

Staples VSO Fundraiser 2010

On November 6th, 2010 the Staples “Give a Toonie. Share a Dream” campaign kicked off. In Victoria, Special Olympics athletes and volunteers set up shop in the Tolmie Location to celebrate the campaign and thank customers for their generosity. Over $3,000 was raised for Special Olympics BC.

Softball Tournament - June 2010

The tournament was attended by teams from Port Alberni, Campbell River, Nanaimo, Powell River and 2 teams from Victoria. The Victoria Dodgers captured first prize. The local chapter of Special Olympics was assisted by various players, retired players, retired coaches, Jean in the concession and Don Rainer for whom we are most thankful.

19th Annual Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon - 2010

On a beautiful Saturday approximately 40 Special Olympics atheletes and 18 volunteers participated in the 19th Annual Special Olympics Walk-a-Thon at Centennial Square. Almost $7000 was raised with Danny Pace raising the most money at $1200. Danny also made a generous contribution to the walk-a-thon stating "you guys do so much for me and my friends, I wanted to do this for you". Mr. Tube Steaks was there to supply and cook hot dogs (by donation). He was impressed with our athletes, saying "You are the best group; so polite and patient while waiting in line. I really enjoyed working with Special Olympics.

Safeway Recognizes Special Olympics (SOBC)

Safeway designated Saturday April 24th as SOBC Awareness Day and donated a portion of their daily proceeds to Special Olympics. Severa. Victoria athletes and volunteers participated in the day by meeting customers. All 4 Greater Victoria Safeway stores participated (Sidney, Shelbourne, Fort & Foul Bay and Tillicum).
