Perseid Meteor 2009

I can't call it a "shower"; out of 120 exposures of 30 seconds each, taken between 1 and 5am in the morning, only ONE showed a meteor trail. And here it is. Taken from my balcony. There's lots of light pollution, which I have mostly filtered out.

Campbell Life - Moon and Tower

The full moon over the water tower on May 8, 2009, dealing with several photographic problems. First, the lighting of the tower is too "hot" so I used HDR to smooth it out. Second, in order to avoid ghosting in the moon and retain illumination of the tower roof I made a composite by "cutting out" the tower. Third I experimented with a separate moon layer in order to achieve, variously, a nicer composition and/or more detail in the moon.

Catching the 7am ferry from Barra to Banjul was a challenge. We got there in time, we thought, but the gates were closed and things were chaotic. As usual, a helpful local emerged, somehow got tickets for us, and told us how to have the gate opened for us. Presumably he profited in some way. But without him we would have spent the day in Barra.

We arrived in Barra about 10:30pm, just after the [early] departure of the last ferry. Negotiations with private boatmen seemed promising, and we waited at the end of the jetty, but in the end we spent the night in a local hotel.

Gambia #2 - Dakar

In the fourth leg of our journey to The Gambia, we flew from Lisbon to Dakar, Senegal, arriving at the airport about 2:30am. It took around an hour to get out of the airport, but fortunately we had asked the hotel Croix de Sud to arrange taxis. They were waiting for us and got us there by 4am, exhausted. The next morning, after a few hours sleep, we walked around central Dakar and got lunch, then squeezed into a "sept place" ("seven seat") station wagon for the trip to the Gambia.
