Cascade Lakes & Church Pond

A quick trip to see the damage caused by a landslide at Cascade Mt Falls during Hurricane Irene. I stopped at Church Pond (Paul Smiths, NY) on the way home to photograph a fallen tree in the ice.

Benson Mines 2011

A series of photographs made at the former site of Benson Mines/Jones Laughlin Steel, Star Lake, NY. Not my usual subject matter but one that I found educational and interesting as well as visually stimulating. The series was made over 3 visits to the site and includes several HDR images as well as my Reverse Grisaille technique which works well to accentuate skies.

Currie Album

Photos from the Currie album that was in the estate of Laura Currie of Huntingdon, P.Q. At the time these photos were made the Curries and Aubreys resided in the vicinity of Aubrey's Corners near Dundee, P.Q. I'm sharing the photos publicly so that they may be helpful to others researching the family histories of those shown here and if anyone can identify any of the unnamed photos I would appreciate your assistance with them.

LauraCurrie's Photographs

Scans of Laura Currie's negatives. The photos were made in the early 1900s. Most are from Aubreys Corners, Dundee, Quebec, Canada. A few are of Huntingdon, Quebec and Malone, NY with occasional other locations I can not identify. Most identifications of individuals are by Gloria Currie Campbell, the last surviving member of that generation.

Inman Gulf

Photos from a trip to revisit the haunts of my youth. Inman Gulf was just over the hill in back of our house where I lived from age 3 to 13 and from about age 7 or 8 onwards my brother and I used to play down in the Gulf only we just knew it as "the gorge". It has changes surprisingly little in over a half century.

Shelburne Museum

Forty four years ago we visited the Shelburne Museum on our honeymoon. We went back again on our 23rd anniversary. This year they were having an exhibit of Ansel Adams photographs and I thought it was time we went again. These photos are from that trip. There are no photos of the Adams exhibit both because it wasn't allowed and you can't get good photos under those conditions anyway. I did buy two books of his photos at the store to add to those I already had.

Chaumont Barrens

Photos taken at Chaumont Barrens, Chaumont, NY, a Nature Conservancy reserve. It has an unusual environment that includes wildflowers not seen elsewhere in Northern NY. Flight in B&W

Photos taken in flight from Chicago to Syracuse. The originals were very flat and very blue. Using multiple techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop I increased the contrast, simplified, and converted them to B&W. The views were chosen based on the patterns in them. Simplification of the images accentuated the patterns. Shooting from commercial flights can be difficult. The altitude makes the view very flat unless the air is very dry and I've never managed to be on a commercial plane that had clean windows. I set the camera to manual focus at infinity and made a point of not touching the window when shooting (vibration). All were taken with a Canon G10.

Photos from our visit to Ian & Jen. We went to see them and their new house. I also wanted to photograph some Texas wildflowers in spring. The roses and lizard are in their back yard. The wildflowers are all in green space areas within walking distance from their house in Austin.

500mm Mirror Lens

Photos taken with a Lentar f/8 500mm mirror lens on a Canon 10D and pictures of the lens. The lens has built-in 2X and 4X ND filters for the light equivalents of f/11 and f/16. It is a glass lens so it is rather hefty but its performance is superior to the common mirror and air space lens lenses that go for $100-$150. The unprocessed images are slightly low in contrast and show some vignetting but it is easily corrected in an image editor as can be seen from the images in this gallery. It is also surprisingly sharp for a mirror lens. It is for sale. I find I don't use it much and I have to thin my equipment. It currently fits Canon EOS via an adapter ("T" mount?). I'm sure it could easily be adapted to Nikon, Pentax or other mounts. It includes a front lens cap (no rear cap), a sun shade and a soft case. The tripod quick release plate that appears in a couple of the photos is not included. Asking $200. Would consider reasonable offers.

Adirondack Posters

A series of posters I am creating of characteristic Adirondack scenes. When complete I plan to have a series of at least 6-8 and they will be available as inexpensive offset prints (TBA) or as signed archival inkjet prints (giclee in art-speak) available now. The archival version is signed and numbered in pencil on the back (open edition) and signed in ink on the face. They are $80/print rolled in a tube plus postage. Multiples can be mailed together with a sheet of plain paper between prints. They are 18"x24" except for the "Snow Squall over Indian Pass" panorama poster which is 14"x24". NY residents have to add 7% sales tax. I will add more as I create them and announce the offset versions as I arrange for printing in 2010. Inquiries should be sent to jim.bullard(at)gmail.com and put "Posters' in the subject line to be sure you get through spam filters. The copyright notice will not be on the actual poster. That is only on the web image to discourage piracy.

Old Church Ruin, Woodstock, Ontario

While staying with relatives in Woodstock my niece suggested that I might like to photograph the remnants of an old church that was being torn down. The front arches had been left standing to incorporate into whatever was being built in its place but the new building project has not begun. These photos are my exploration of the site. Thanks again for the tip Sherri.

MIXED DOZEN entries

"MIXED DOZEN" is a show of 12 artists that will open on July 11 at Art Central in Potsdam, NY. These images are part of a series I call my Adirondack Mandalas. All are landscape details which I have cropped and matted round to simulate our field of vision when we are focusing on a particular point. These are photographs of the actual matted and framed prints so there are slight reflections on the glass and the copyright is only part of these web images. It isn't on the actual mat. The bit of wood around the edges is an antique drawing table that I used as an easel to hold them while taking the photos. These are all 1st prints of these images. The print is signed in pencil on the face bordering the image area and the back bears the print number, date made and my signature in pencil. The image diameter is 12", they are matted to 16" in black metal frames. The framed prints are for sale at $200 each. I can't ship them prior to the end of the show however (July 11 through August 22nd).

A return trip to the Eighth Lake campgrounds and a bike ride on the Moose River Plains Rd. John made it all the way. I ran out of gas at 16 miles and had to ride in Bruce's SUV the last few miles.

Indian Pass

On June 5th I hiked to "my" lean-to to do a clean-up. I have been the adopter of Scott Clearing lean-to for the last 6 or 7 years. I got to the lean-to early and there wasn't much work to be done so I decided to also climb Indian Pass. I hadn't been to the top of Indian Pass in at least 20 years. A 12 mile round trip and a very good day.

Quest on Mt. Marcy

Eight to ten years ago when I was on a hike with my friend Rick we bushwhacked from Gray Peak to Marcy and when we came out of the krummholtz on the side of Marcy I spotted a Mountain Azalea. I took a photo at the but only had a 35mm point & shoot so I couldn't get a close up and it wasn't a very good photo. I'd been meaning to go back with a camera that would focus on individual blooms but didn't get around to it until this trip. Although the weather was great there were hoards of black flies. It was necessary to keep moving to keep from being eaten alive. I didn't find the azalea if it is still there. It may not have survived. The Western slope of Marcy above tree line is a tough environment for any plant.

Spring on the Tooley Pond Rd. 2008

Some photos I took along the Grass River where it parallels the Tooley Pond Rd. in St. Lawrence County of NNY. The Tooley Pond Rd. is largely unpopulated and runs from Degrasse to NY-Rt3 near Cranberry Lake. There are numerous picturesque waterfalls and rapids in the South Branch of the Grass River, some quite near the road but others requiring a short hike or even a bushwhack to locate. As always the images are copyrighted. You may enjoy them here, give the URL to your friends if you want to share them but you may not copy and repost/publish them elsewhere.
