110723-110819 Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness
I went into the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness alone on July 23, 2011 and returned August 19. I had been there once before. While there, I was a USFS volunteer posted in the Fish Lake valley. The valley is surrounded by ridges that were under deep snowpack when I arrived. The valley had been inaccessible from a few weeks after I left last August until a week before I returned this summer. Adam Washebek was the first this year to walk into the valley a week before I did. I used the Boulder Creek trail to reach the valley. I came out overland across the Maxine Ridge, where no one had been since the 1990s. The ridge descends into the Long Lake Saddle. From the saddle, I descended to Horse Camp, which is only a day's walk from the edge of the Wilderness.
