Los Azufres and El Rosario
Geni Certain and Larry Wood had made the pilgrimmage to the Monarch butterfly wintering grounds in each of the last two years. This year we decided to see more of the region, particularly Los Azufres, an area of hot springs.
We set out from our house in Las Cuevas, outside of Pátzcuaro, and traveled about 150 miles east, to the extreme northeast corner of the state of Michoacán. We took the autopista, a four-lane toll highway, from Morelia to Ucareo and then traveled on a mountain road south through Los Azufres toward Cuidad Hidalgo. The road alternated between open farm land, small villages and dense forests.
We looked superficially at several appealing resorts. We quickly chose Eréndira, which we had expected to be out of our price range but which offered us a very good mid-week rate of about $50 U.S. per night. We drove by and looked at the Los Azufres spa, but we did not stop, as we were on our way home.
