On 13 March, FRIDE and Hivos organised in Madrid a debate on 'Civil-military relations in Egypt'.
The army has always played an important role in Egypt. Now, three years after the fall of Mubarak, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt’s defense minister, could soon announce his candidacy to the country’s presidential elections.
During the event, Ibrahim el Houdaiby, FRIDE Associate Fellow, and Robert Springborg, Professor at the Department for National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School, analysed the power relations between the military and other state institutions, and how the army under the leadership of Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is likely to position itself in Egypt's political order.
