Fun with the Family!

Over the ocean and through the plains to Grandmother's house we go. This was our follow-up trip to Tokyo and the Philippines, and visiting Grandpa and Grandma (and Heidi and Willie) made it all worth it. Their great-grandparents were very excited to meet Anya & Grant.

Country Roads

The Makaha Sons of Niihau invited us to "Take a walk in the country". As a Great Plains state where agriculture is king, there's plenty to drive around. The flat monotony did not get to them however, as there were plenty of mighty machines and combines to see.

Parks and Recreation

How do we make Lincoln, Nebraska as fun as Tokyo and the Philippines? Lots and lots of playgrounds! They had rather large and extensive playgrounds. As opposed to Hawaii, which only uses those tubular "safety gyms". So, they got introduced to swings, see-saws, and merry-go-rounds.

Nebraska State Capitol

Lincoln's top landmark: the Nebraska State Capitol. One of the few designed as a skyscraper, it made the AIA's list of the Seven Modern Architectural Wonders of the World. Lincoln's tallest building, it's visible from pretty much everywhere. The impressive interior has a free observation deck.

Downtown Lincoln & the Haymarket

Lincoln is the state capital and home of the University of Nebraska. It's a very clean and livable city of 258,379. Just don't visit in the middle of summer or winter. The Haymarket is the old warehouse district, now a lively mix of restaurants and shops, especially the Farmers Market.

University of Nebraska campus

Daddy's college, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's City Campus is in downtown Lincoln. Founded in 1869 as the state university, it has an enrollment of 24,593. A nice campus for strolling, it gives the football team a college it can be proud of ; )

Nebraska City

Another out-of-town trip, about an hour outside of Lincoln. We've always liked this quintessential Midwestern town of 7,228, on the now-flooded Missouri River. We usually go for the outlet mall, but we all enjoyed the Arbor Day Farm. If you've ever observed Arbor Day, here's where it all started, and Nebraska City has the trees to prove it.

Beatrice, Nebraska

Pronounced "Be-AT-ris", it's a large town (for Nebraska) of 12,459, about an hour south of Lincoln. Great-Grandpa and Grand-Grandpa live here, and loved to show their town off. As did Grandpa, who grew up here as well.

Homestead National Monument

Homestead National Monument of America is located near Beatrice. It commemorates the Homestead Act of 1862, where 160 acres was given to anyone willing to farm it. Daniel Freeman was the first one to make a claim on the Act, and chose this area of the Nebraska Territory. Anya and Grant got to learn some American history, and have fun exploring, too.

Nebraska State Museum

The University of Nebraska State Museum has been Daddy's favorite Lincoln attraction (except for fall Saturdays) since he was little. In the UNL Campus' Morrill Hall, it's a very impressive museum, especially Elephant Hall and various paleontology exhibits.

Strategic Air and Space Museum

Bellevue's Offutt AFB, just south of Omaha, headquarted the Strategic Air Command (SAC). So that meant Nebraska would be ground zero if the Cold War turned hot. On the bright side, that meant a lot of cool airplanes were on display at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. Interestingly, I had not been to this museum since it moved to Ashland.

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo

Usually, we don't include zoos on our tourist itineraries. They always seemed more for a city's denizens than tourist attractions. I mean, seen one elephant or lion, seen 'em all, right? The Henry Doorly Zoo, however, is quite the exception, with the Leid Jungle and the Desert Dome. We didn't cover half of this enormous zoo, but still saw plenty.

Tractor and Children's Museums

Besides the capitol and university, Lincoln offered fun cultural attractions for Anya and Grant. They visited the rather extensive Lincoln Children's Museum (much larger than Honolulu, Manila, and even Manhattan's) and had a blast with their cousins. We also saw the Tractor Museum, which was heaven for little Grant!

Shopping & Eating in Nebraska

The luggage wasn't as full coming back this time. Target, Victorias Secret, and Bath & Body Works are now in Hawaii, so we had less pasalubong requests. Nonetheless, shopping and eating we part of the fun, as we had hearty Midwestern fare and mainland suppliers that haven't reached across the Pacific.

Memorial Stadium

Nebraska's Memorial Stadium, holding 81,000 fans. One of the shrines of college football, every single game has been sold out since 1962. We got to show Anya and Grant the stadium, as many areas are open the public. I, of course, also went to the stadium: for a football game! How did I manage to score tickets to this first Big Ten matchup?

Gameday in Nebraska

Not only was I a sports photographer today, but a tourist as well. All work and no play, right? So, here's some photos NU vs OSU, outside the usual football action shots. Memorial Stadium has such a terrific atmosphere, that its impossible not to have a good time, win or lose, rain or shine. I should know: I dealt with both rain and losing in the first half.

Nebraska vs Ohio State

Here I am at Nebraska's biggest game in years. Playing a big-name powerhouse for the first Big Ten home game on October 8. These are just a sampling of the 2000 pictures taken, most of which went to the magazine. Nebraska started off very slowly, falling behind 27-6. Then, they engineered the greatest comeback in Husker history, winning the game 34-27! And I was there, right on the field with them!
