Baking Kolaches for Christmas

Members got together on December 3, 2011 to bake kolaches to fill orders for Christmas (they can be frozen!). They also baked and made plates of kolaches for the Christmas Carolers to take to our homebound members and friends on the following day.

April 17, 2011 Cantata

A 20-voice choir presented "You are the Christ" on Palm Sunday, April 17, 2011. Peter's experience in the days leading up to Christ's crucifixion was the theme of the cantata, which was narrated by Gary K. It was beautiful and very moving. Thanks to all that participated.

April Kolach Kamp

Kolach Kamp was held on Saturday, April 16 with 4 "learners" and a number of experienced church members present. Joanne C. demonstrated how to make the dough and learners were involved in all phases of rolling, filling, proofing, basting (and sampling!). About 80 dozen kolaches were made at this session. Some were taken to homebound or people recovering at home. About 50 dozen kolaches went to fill pre-orders which were sold to help earn funds for our brand new proofer, which provides a warm, moist environment for raising out dough. It really helped speed up the kolach making process.

Baby Shower

The congregation feted Pastor Julie with a baby shower on the afternoon of Sunday, April 10, 2011. She and Steve received many beautiful and useful gifts. Attendees wrote "words of child raising advice" on cards, many of the humorous, some of which were read during the festivities. Karen Z. made delicious cake and mints, while other organizers provided mixed nuts, party sandwiches, and fruit salad.

Youth Director gets pie in the face

As one of the rewards for the Youth Group raising over $5,000 to help feed hungry children, our Youth Director agreed to have a pie thrown in her face. Luke H., who raised the most, had the honor of doing the deed. The Youth Director also had her hair died the color the Youth Group chose later on - another reward.

Spring Luncheon

A well-attended Women’s Spring Luncheon was held Sunday, March 20, 2011 in the festively decorated church fellowship hall. The men of the church worked in the kitchen and served the ladies and girls a catered dinner. A Vintage Hat Style Show followed the luncheon featuring hats from many different eras. Joanne C. and Jennie N. acted as MC's and told stories about individual hats. Girls and women of the church modeled the hats and gowns. The gathering also enjoyed several humorous groups of men in hats and furs. A slide show put together by Terry Z. acted as a backdrop to the style show with history and pictures of era hats. The Arnolds provided background music for the slide show. Thank you to everyone who helped with this luncheon. So many people volunteered to bring the event together successfully. Please know that we appreciate your help. Once again we see how God works through all of you in this small country church with a giant heart.

2010 Soup Supper

Our 61st Chicken Noodle Soup and Kolach Supper was held on October 16, 2010. It was a lovely fall day, which brought out a large crowd of diners. Thank you to everyone who attended, and to all the volunteers that made the event possible.

2010 CROP Hunger Walk

St. John Lutheran Church of Ely, Shueyville United Methodist Church of Shueyville, and First Presbyterian Church near Ely, Iowa joined together for CROP hunger walk on Sunday afternoon, October 3, 2010. Sixty-six participants walked and raised $2500. Of this amount, 25% has been sent to the Linn Community Food Bank and 75% to national and international food agencies through CROP Walk. Thank you for your participation and support.

2010 Tractor Ride

Third Annual Tractor Ride sponsored by our church. The ride went from our church to the Coralville Dam and back - through rain and sun. A great, although a bit soggy, time was had by all.

2010 VBS

2010 Vacation Bible School was held every Sunday in June starting at 9:30 a.m. Children were dismissed from worship after the Children's Message. A camp out was held on Saturday, June 26th before the final Sunday of VBS. June 27th the children shared music and a skit with the congregation during worship. It was a fun time for all!

Installation Sunday

On Sunday, May 2, 2010 an Administrative Commission of the Presbytery of East Iowa installed Reverend Julie Schuett as Pastor of our congregation. This process of installation was a time of blessing and commitment for our congregation and our new Pastor. A reception was held in our Fellowship Hall with a special cake and, of course, kolaches ... a tradition of our historical Czech congregation. Guest preachers for the morning were the honorably retired Revered Charles Mills and Elder Leigh Benish. The Administrative Commission included Rev. Mills, Elder Adam Anderson of Dunkerton, Elder Barbara Bjork of Mt. Vernon, Rev. Dr. R. Dixon Jennings of Cedar Rapids, Elder Melanie Mabee of Marion, and Presbytery Moderator Elder Cindy Monroe of Cedar Rapids. Rev. Jay Miller of Marion was unable to be present. Sharon Furler & Pastor Schuett played a piano duet as a prelude. Guest musician was pianist Elder David Mabee. Joanne Chadima, flutist, accompanied the Adult Choir as well as hymns.

30 Hour Famine

The Youth Group led worship after fasting for the 30 Hour Famine over the weekend. They told about their experiences during worship. Through fund-raising in the past few months they have made enough money to feed 7 children for a year. We are proud of them.

Palm Sunday & Easter

PALM SUNDAY:The children formed a procession, each carrying a palm up the aisles. Music on Palm Sunday included a trumpet/baritone/piano prelude, a flute quartet and an anthem by the adult and children's choir. The handbell choir performed from the balcony as well. It was a beautiful worship, full of music. EASTER: We again had a musical worship with the adult choir, flute, trumpets and baritone. The handbell choir performed from the balcony.

Tots Club Potluck

We had a great turnout at our kickoff potluck and planning meeting Saturday January 16. The menu of chicken nuggets and mac and cheese (with sides provided by the parents) was a hit with the kids! In the midst of all the fun, the parents were able to plan Tots Club activities for 2010. It was decided to meet every other month.

Youth-30 Hour Famine

The youth participated in a 30 hour famine from 6 a.m. on Saturday to noon on Sunday. They worked at a homeless shelter, shopped for food on a very limited budget, and did a door-to-door food collection drive, among other activities to raise their awareness of hunger. On Sunday they led worship, culminating in "pie-ing" the Youth Leader as a reward for reaching a goal for raising funds for World Mission. A congregational potluck was held following worship to end the 30 Hour Famine and feed our HUNGRY teens!

Chicken Noodle Soup Supper - 150th Anniversary Event

The Chicken Noodle Soup & Kolach Supper was held this year as a 150th anniversary event in memory of the generations of women who helped put on this event for almost 60 years. Church members bake kolaches, either at home, or at a mass baking in the church kitchen the morning of the event. Members also make home-made soup from two chickens and provide breads, pickles and vegetable trays. All members then join together to volunteer in various work assignments to make the supper a success. Thanks to Angie for these photos!

Celebration of Music - 150th Anniversary Event

To celebrate 150 years of music in our church congregation, members and friends were invited to perform. Music ranged from the combined choirs of St. John Lutheran, Shueyville United Methodist and our choir; to accordion music and piano/jazz music by the Reymans; bluegrass gospel by the Riverbottom Ramblers; brass solos and wind quartet music; organ, flute and vocal solos. It was an afternoon filled with glorious music!

West Church Worship- 150th Annivesary Event

A special worship service was held at the site of a branch church, the"West Church", on September 21, 2008, in memory of the congregation that attended church there from 1895 to 1936, when the church was completely demolished by fire. One of the original trees is still standing and serves to mark the spot. After the service the congregation feasted on bakery items brought by members.

Sesquicentennial Sunday Service

The Sesquicentennial Worship was held August 17 starting at 9:30 a.m. The service was full of music, with a string quartet, the adult and children's choir, special organ music, vocal soloists and instrumentalists taking part. Visiting former ministers participated in the service.

Sesquicentennial Weekend Meet 'N' Greet Social Time

A "Meet 'N' Greet social time with a light meal was held starting at 4:30 during our 150th anniversary weekend. People signed the guest book and donned name tags. Former pastors and members were greeted and welcomed by congregation members. The Archive Room and Antique Household Room were open for viewing and people enjoyed viewing the bulletin board displays and church scrapbooks. Children played on outdoor equipment while the adults talked. A power point presentation with photos from the late 1800s to present ran continuously in the Sanctuary. Jim and Jean provided music during the meal. All enjoyed visiting and sharing memories and thanks for their years with our church.

Sesquicentennial Weekend Program

The Saturday evening Sesquicentennial program began at 7:00 p.m. with prayer. Introductions of former ministers, VIP guests, visiting families and the History Committee were made. The program took us back in time as each former minister present was invited forward to share memories. History Committee members read greetings from ministers not able to attend, and a biographical reading or powerpoint presentation was given for each minister serving the church back to our first minister and missionary to the Midwest, the Rev. Frantisek Kun. Many memories noted the strong Czech heritage of the church, past members who were pillars of the church, and of course, kolaches!

Tractor Ride - 150th Anniversary Event

This event featured a tractor ride from church to the site of the Rogers Grove Church (now gone) as part of our 150th Anniversary Celebration. Antique farm machinery and small machines were on display on the church grounds. Inside the church was a display of antique household items. A luncheon was served at the conclusion of the tractor ride. Thanks to Terry Z. and family for a marvelous job of organizing this great event!

Youth Choir, Youth Group Reunion - 150th Anniversary Event

A reunion of youth who were active during the pastorate of Rev. DeSmidt and his wife was held the weekend of July 12 & 13, 2008 as part of our 150th Anniversary Celebration. A cookout and potluck was held Saturday night with the DeSmidts, with plenty of time to remember good times past. Sunday worship was outdoors with Rev. Jim and Jean providing music. Original Church Site Worship - 150th Anniversary Event

A worship service was held at our cemetery, where our church was originally built by our immigrant ancestors in 1867-8. Some members chose to walk the mile down the country road to the cemetery, while others rode in wagons pulled by tractors. The congregation shared the Lord's Supper there among the graves of their forefathers. A pew from the original church was used to seat our minister and liturgist and prairie flowers decorated the altar, which was a lectern once used in our "west" church. It was truly a beautiful and meaningful worship service.

Historic Bridal Show

The Women's Luncheon & Historic Bridal Show was held the afternoon of Sunday, February 24, 2008. A luncheon was served by the men of the church to 170 participants. A 3-tier wedding cake made by Terry Z. and colorful mints were showcased on a table. A style show in the Sanctuary followed the luncheon and consisted of 70 historic bridal gowns, bride's maid and flower girl dresses from the past. The oldest gown displayed was 108 years old. A story was read about each gown as it was modeled. Boys, teens and adult men of the church gave an arm to each model as she proceeded down the steps and aisle. Music was performed by church musicians on piano, flute and organ, and vocals accompanied the show with wedding songs through the years. Thanks to Terry Z. for organizing this event!
