Ingleborough & Pen-y-ghent

A delightful and interesting wander taking in 2 of the 3 Yorkshire Peaks. The weather was pretty good with plenty of sunshine, although there was a pretty cool and strong wind blowing on the summits. I set off from Horton in Ribblesdale and ascended Ingleborough via the 3 peaks route, before turning north east to follow the ridge path all the way to Park Fell and the B6479 near Gauber. I then made my way to Nether Lodge via Ribble Head House, Thorns and the Ribble Way, before again following the 3 peaks route to the Pennine Way. From here I followed the Pennine Way south before turning left onto a path over Sell Gill Hill and Whitber Hill to rejoin the Pennine Way near Hull Pot. The Pennine Way led me over the summit of Pen-y-ghent, before turning right off it to descend to Brackenclose and Horton in Ribblesdale.

The Kentmere Horseshoe

A wonderful day out on the Far Eastern Fells in the Lake District on a day with plenty of sunshine, and although it was cold to start off and there was a pretty cool wind, it was quite warm out of the wind. I set off from Kentmere and crossed the River Kent before climbing out of the Kentmere valley towards Sadgill before turning north over the summits of Shipman Knotts and Kentmere Pike to Harter Fell. A short sharp descent and ascent via the Nan Bield Pass led me to the summit of Mardale Ill Bell before the traverse around the head of the Kentmere valley to the distinctive beacon of Thornthwaite Crag. Here the route turned south over the summits of Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke, before the long descent to the Garburn Pass. All that was left was to follow the Garburn Pass back to the start in Kentmere.

Mellbreak, Hen Comb, Gavel Fell, Blake Fell & Carling Knott

A very interesting and quiet wander on some of the Loweswater Fells in the Lake District. The weather started with plenty of blue sky, although it clouded up during the morning, but started to clear again in the afternoon. There was a pretty stiff and cool wind blowing over the tops however. The air clarity was superb with the long rang views to the Isle of Man and Scotland very clear. I set off from the telephone box in Loweswater and followed the Mosedale bridleway before climbing upto the first summit of the day, the northern top of Mellbreak. A gentle up and down brought me to the southern top of Mellbreak, before the long descent down to Mosedale and the crossing of Mosedale Beck. After a very steep and zig zagging climb I arrived at the summit of Hen Comb, before a more gentle descent and Climb via Whiteoak Moss led me to Gavel Fell. High Rigg, Clough Head, Great Dodd, Watson's Dodd & Stybarrow Dodd

A wonderful and very varied wander taking in low and high fells and valleys in the Lake District. I set off from Legburthwaite and climbed to the first summit of the day, High Rigg, before descending to the church and St Johns in the Vale. I then climbed up through the Hill Top Quarries and traversed to Fisher's Wife's Rake which I ascended to reach the summit of Clough Head. Following the ridge south I took in the summits of Calfhow Pike, Great Dodd, Watson's Dodd and Stybarrow Dodd before the descent to the Sticks Pass and the longer descent back down into the valley. The weather was pretty good with clear blue skies to start with, and although it got cloudier upto early afternoon, it started to clear again later on. The only downside to the day was a pretty strong and cool breeze blowing over the tops.

Steel Knotts, Wether Hill, Loadpot Hill, Bonscale Pike & Arthur's Pike

A lovely wander on the Far Eastern Fells of the Lake District on a day which started with low cloud but ended with some nice sunny spells. I started from Pooley Bridge and followed paths and bridleways to Howtown and the ascent of Steel Knotts and its summit, Pikeawassa. I then followed the ridge before the short sharp ascent up onto the High Street ridge and the summits of Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill. From there a shortish descent led to the last two summits of the day, Bonscale Pike and Arthur's Pike, before the longer descent to The Cockpit and finally back to Pooley Bridge.

Nethermost Pike, Helvellyn, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Sheffield Pike & Glenridding Dodd

This was a wonderful and beautiful day out on the Lakeland Fells with perfect weather, a crystal clear blue sky, superb visibility and warm sun. I set off from Glenridding and made the short ascent to Keldas and Lanty's Tarn before dropping into Grisedale. I then followed Nethermostcove Beck up into Nethermost Cove before doubling back onto the ridge and the final steep ascent to Nethermost Pike. I then followed to ridge northwards to Helvellyn, Helvellyn Lower Man, White Side, Raise, Sticks Pass and Stybarrow Dodd. From there I turned east to Green Side, Nick Head, Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd before the steep descent back to Glenridding.

Wansfell, St Ravens Edge, Hart Crag & Troutbeck Tongue

A slightly off the beaten track route taking in a few of the quieter fells. The weather was pretty warm, although it was really hazy, so there were no good long distance views. I set off from the church bridge carpark and followed a footpath and then Nanny Lane to Wansfell Pike and along the ridge to Wansfell. I descended to the Kirkstone Pass road before crossing it and climbing Broad End to the summit of St Ravens Edge. I then followed the path which heads towards Caudale Moor before veering right to the summit of Hart Crag. From there I headed east to descend down into the valley and cross Trout Beck and take the gentle climb to the final summit of the day, Troutbeck Tongue. A short steep descent to the valley came next before crossing Hagg Gill and following the bridleway all the way back along the Trout Beck valley to the start.

Stone Arthur, Great Rigg, Fairfield, Seat Sandal & Steel Fell

A lovely and varied walk from Grasmere on a really walm and sunny day, although it was pretty hazy so there were no really good long distance views. I set off from Grasmere and followed a path to the A591 and the start of the climb upto the first summit of the day, Stone Arthur. From a here a steady climb led to Great Rigg and then Fairfield. A steep and rough descent led me down to Grisedale Hause, before the short sharp ascent of Seat Sandal. I followed Raise Beck down to Dunmail Raise before the very steep ascent of the final summit of the day, Steel Fell. A gentle descent and lovely wander along a back road led me back to the start in Grasmere.

Whiteside, Hopegill Head, Eel Crag, Wandope, Whiteless Pike & Rannerdale Knotts

A perfect day out in the Lakeland fells, beautiful weather and good visibility and a interesting route. I started from the car park at the base of Rannerdale Knotts and wandered around to Langthwaite Green before the steep climb upto Whiteside via Whin Ben. The interesting walk along the ridge and a short climb led me to Hopegill Head before the descent via Sand Hill to Coledale Hause. From here I climbed directly upto the summit of Eel Crag and then onto Wandope before following Whiteless Edge to Whiteless Pike. A long descent and short climb led to the final summit of the day, Rannerdale Knotts. All that was left was the short descent back to the car park.

Barf, Lord's Seat, Broom Fell, Ling Fell, Graystones & Whinlatter

A lovely and very quiet wander on the north western fells north of the Whinlatter Pass. The weather was nice with planty of sun and superb visibility. I set off from the Whinlatter Pass and followed forest tracks to the first summit of the day, Barf. Lord's Seat and Broom Fell followed in quick succession before I descended to a small wood and contoured around Burthwaite Heights inorder to climb Ling Fell. From here I crossed Wythop Moss and climbed upto Widow Hause and onto Graystones. A very steep descent led to the Darling How plantation, which I descended through to cross the Aiken Beck. I followed the forest road on the other side of the Beck and climbed upto and through the forest to leave a final short ascent to the last summit of the day, Whinlatter. After visiting the two tops, all that was left was a descent on forest tracks back to the Whinlatter Pass.

Souther Fell, Blencathra, Mungrisdale Common, Bannerdale Crags & Bowscale Fell

A delightful and really interesting walk on Blencathra and some of the quieter fells in the north of the Lakes. The weather varied from quite grey and overcast to pleasently sunny with a band of dark grey clouds passing overhead mid afternoon. I started from Mungrisdale and climbed Souther Fell before descending to Mousthwaite Comb and Scales before the climb up the Hall's Fell ridge to Blencathra. From here I made an out and back to Mungrisdale Common before the short climb to the summit of Bannerdale Crags. A short descent and longer ascent led to the final summit of the day, Bowscale Fell. All that was left was the descent along the northern ridge, straight back down into Munrisdale.

Green Crag, Harter Fell & Hard Knott

An absolutely superb day out on some of the quieter fells in the Lake District. The weather was lovely with plenty of sunshine and good air clarity, although there was a coolish breeze blowing on the summits. I set off from Eskdale YHA and crossed the River Esk at Doctor's Bridge before climbing the old peat road from Low Birker and crossing Foxbield Moss to the first summit of the day, Green Crag. A short hop across the col led me to Crook Crag before the longer traverse across to the end of the forest and a steep ascent led me to Harter Fell. After a steepish descent and longish wander I arrived at the Hardknott Pass, before a short steep ascent and meandering path led me to the summit of Hard Knott. I retraced my route back along the ridge and turned right to the cairn on Border End. After a steepish and pathless descent I came to the Roman Fort and then onto the road at the bottom of the pass. All that was left was a short wander back along the road to Eskdale YHA.

Holme Fell & Black Crag

A lovely and very interesting lower level wander in the Lake District on a very warm and humid day. I set off from Skelwith Bridge making my way to Hodge Close via, Park How, Colwith Force and High Park, Slater Bridge and Cathedral Cavern. I made the short detour to the quarry bottom before climbing to the first summit of the day, Holme Fell. From here I descended to Yew Tree House via Uskdale Gap, before the short ascent alongside Tom Gill led me to Tarn Hows. After the longer climb up through Iron Keld, I arrived at the second summit of the day, Black Crag. It was all downhill now, on the bridleway which drops across the side of Park Fell to the Ambleside Coniston road, which left a short wander back to Skelwith Bridge.

High Stile, Red Pike, Starling Dodd & Great Borne

A very nice and varied wander on a few of the Western Fells in the Lake District. The weather was also very varied, starting out with clear blue skies, but clouding over by the early afternoon. I decided to climb the north east ridge of High Stile, so I set off from Buttermere and took a path through Burtness Wood which climbs up into Birkness Comb and the ridge. From High Stile I followed the path around to Red Pike before the descent and short ascent to the summit of Starling Dodd. A short descent and longer ascent led to Great Borne before a very steep descent down to Floutern Pass and Floutern Tarn. From the pass it was a long descent all the way back to Buttermere.

Glaramara, Allen Crags, Great Gable, Green Gable & Base Brown

A wonderful day out in Lake District with perfect sunny and very warm weather. I set off from Seathwaite and turned right to ascend up the side of Hind Gill to the first summit of the day, Glaramara. The delightful undulating ridge brought me to Allen Crags before the descent down to Styhead and the long ascent of Great Gable. I made the short detour to the Westmorland Crag before the descent to Windy Gap and the ascent of Green Gable. A longer descent and short reascent led to the final summit of the day, Base Brown. From here I took the direct descent past the hanging stone to the top of the Sour Milk Gill waterfalls, which I followed back to the start at Seathwaite.

High Street, Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell, Branstree & Selside Pike

A lovely walk on a fine, warm sunny day on the Far Eastern Fells in the Lake District. I set off from Mardale Head and climbed the Rough Crag ridge to my first summit of the day, High Street. A gentle descent and ascent led to Mardale Ill Bell, before a steep descent down to the Nan Bield Pass and equally steep ascent led upto Harter Fell. After a steep descent to the Gatesgarth Pass and ascent I arrived at Branstree before a more gentle walk led me to the final summit of the day, Selside. From Selside I descended to the Old Corpse Road which I followed to descend back to Haweswater and follow the lakeside path back to Mardale Head.

Bowfell, Esk Pike, Rossett Pike & Pike o Stickle

A lovely walk in the Lake District on a nicely warm and sunny day, although the air was quite hazy. I set off from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and climbed up The Band before forking right to take in the climbers traverse and Great Slab to reach the summit of Bowfell. From the summit I descended to Ore Gap and then climbed upto Esk Pike before descending to Esk Hause and Angle Tarn before the short ascent to Rossett Pike. I then traversed around to the Stake Pass before the final climb of the day over Martcrag Moor led to the Pike o Stickle. A long descent back to the valley led me towards the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel before the short walk back along the Cumbria Way to the Old Hotel.

Ullock Pike, Long Side, Carl Side, Little Man, Skiddaw, Great Calva & Knott

An interesting and varied wander on the Northern Fells in the Lake District. I set off from Peter House Farm and followed a bridleway to Barkbeth before climbing the ridge to Ullock Pike, Long Side and Carl Side. I descended to Carlside Tarn before traversing around Broad End to reach Skiddaw Little Man. A short descent and ascent led to Skiddaw before a long descent over Hare Crag dropped me to the Cumbria Way which I crossed to climb upto Great Calva. I then descended to the Hause Gill col before climbing the other side to the final summit of the day, Knott. I back tracked to the col before descending alongside Hause Gill to the Burn Tod bridleway and the road near Orthwaite. All that was left was a short walk back along the road to Peter House Farm. The weather was pretty good, with blue skies to begin with, before it clouded up mid morning, although it did break up quite a bit in the afternoon. The only downside was a pretty cool, strong wind blowing over the high summits.

Lingmell, Scafell Pike, Ill Crag, Great End & Seathwaite Fell

A superb day out on the Lake District Fells with plenty of blue sky, sun and crystal clear views. An early start from Seathwaite led up past Taylor Gill Force to Styhead and the Corridor Route on upto Lingmell and Scafell Pike. On the way to Great End from Scafell Pike I made the short detour to Ill Crag before descending to Esk Hause and Sprinkling Tarn. I wandered along to the cairn at the end of Seathwaite Fell before the steep, rough and pathless descent to the Stockley Bridge path at the top of Taylor Gill Force. The short descent from here led to Stockley Bridge and gentle stroll back down the valley to Seathwaite.

High Seat, Bleaberry Fell & Walla Crag

A lovely day out wandering around on a few of the Central Fells in the Lake District. The weather started off cold and frosty with a clear blue sky, although some low cloud started to shroud some fells later on. I set off from Keswick YHA and followed the shore of Derwentwater Lake around to the Ashness Gate Landing Stage and then climbed upto Ashness Bridge and then on upto the first summit of the day, High Seat. From here I wandered along the ridge, to Bleaberry Fell before the steep descent and short ascent to Walla Crag. A final descent led down to the road at Rakefoot before I followed a path which dropped back down into Keswick and the short walk back to the YHA.

Great Crag, Grange Fell & Castle Crag

A very interesting walk on a day of superb weather, cold and frosty in the valleys, but with a pleasently warm sun on the fell tops. I started from the carpark in Rosthwaite and walked along the Cumbria Way towards Stonethwaite before turning left for the steep climb up through the woods to Dock Tarn. A short detour led to the fisrt summit of the day, Great Crag before I descended down to Watendlath. From Watendlath I took in the two tops of Grange Fell, Brund Fell and Kings How before the long descent to Grange. On the way back towards Rosthwaite I made the short ascent and descent upto the final summit of the day, Castle Crag.

Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson, Knott Rigg & Ard Crags

A lovely day out on the Lakeland Fells on a day with plenty of sunshine, but a pretty cool breeze blowing on the tops. I set off from the carpark near Little Town and wandered along the Newlands Valley and took the direct climb upto the first summit of the day, Dale Head. I followed Hindscarth Edge to Hindscarth and then Littledale Edge to Robinson before the long descent to High Snockrigg and the Newlands Pass. From the pass I climbed upto firstly Knott Rigg and then Ard Crags. From Ard Crags I descended to Rigg Beck before the short wander back along the road to the car park.

Dow Crag, Grey Friar, Great Carrs, Swirl How & Wetherlam

A lovely wander on some of the Coniston Fells on a sunny autumnal day, although there was a pretty cool breeze blowing over the tops. I set off from the car park at the edge of Coniston Water and followed the Cumbria Way a short distance to the the main road before following a bridleway past the church which climbed to the Walna Scar Road near Cove Bridge. I climbed to the summit of the Walna Scar Road before turning right to reach Dow Crag, before descending to Goats Hause and traversing around Brim Fell to reach Levers Hause. I traversed around Swirl How to reach the col between Grey Friar and Great Carrs before an out and back to the summit of Grey Friar. From the col I traversed around to Little Carrs and then the ridge climbing upto Great Carrs and Swirl How. The last summit I climbed was Wetherlam via the descent down the Prison Band to Swirl Hause. It was now all downhill from the summit via the Lad Stones ridge to get to the Coppermines valley and back to Coniston.

The Coledale Horseshoe

A superb day out on the North Western Fells in the Lake District. I set out from the car park near Braithwaite and climbed Grisedale Pike via Kinn and Sleet How. The weather was nice with superb visibility, although there was a coolish breeze. From Grisedale Pike I did a big loop taking in Hopegill Head, Sand Hill, Grasmoor and Wandope before arriving at Eel Crag. I then followed the ridge over Sail and Scar Crags to the superb lookout of Causey Pike. I descended to the valley at Stonycroft Gill took in Outerside, Stile End and Barrow before finally descending back to Braithwaite.

Blea Rigg, Silver How, Loughrigg Fell and Lingmoor Fell

A lovely walk on some of the lower fells in the Lakes. I set off from the Stickle Ghyll carpark and took the slightly different route of the Whitegill Crag ravine to the first summit of Blea Rigg. The interesting undulating ridge from Blea Rigg led to Silver How, Dow Bank and Red Bank before a gentle climb led upto the summit of Loughrigg Fell. From here I descended to Tarn Foot and followed the Cumbria Way from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater before climbing Lingmoor Fell. The descent back to Great Langdale took in a short detour to Side Pike. The weather was pretty warm with plenty of sunshine, but there were a few brief rain showers around.

Gray Crag, Thornthwaite Crag, Caudale Moor, Red Screes, Middle Dodd & Dove Crag

A delightful walk in the Lakes taking in several tops on either side of the Kirkstone Pass. I started from the Cow Bridge car park and ascended Gray Crag via its north ridge before a gentle ridge stroll led to Thornthwaite Crag. After a steep descent to Threshthwaite Mouth and climb up I reached Caudale Moor and its summit Stony Cove Pike. Red Screes was reached via a long gentle descent to the Kirkstone Pass before a steep climb. I made the short descent to Middle Dodd before making a traverse around the side of Red Screes to arrive at Scandale Pass and climbed to Dove Crag via the High Bakestones cairn. To get back to Brothers Water I descended down through Hunsett Cove before the gentle walk through Dovedale.

The High Stile Ridge

A classic walk in the Lakes, The High Stile Ridge from Buttermere, but with a different ascent to High Crag. I decided to climb what AW called Sheepbone Rake. I followed the lakeside path from Buttermere to Gatesgarth and to the start of the Scarth Gap Path before following a small path which climbed up into Birkness Comb. From there Sheepbone Rake climbs up left to the top of Sheepbone Buttress before leaving a short climb to the summit of High Crag. The ridge was followed to the summits of High Stile and Red Pike before descending to Dodd and then Bleaberry Tarn. All that was left was the long descent from the Tarn to Burtness Wood and Buttermere. The weather was pretty warm with plenty of sun, although it was hazy and it got cloudier into the afternoon.

Lingmell, The Scafells and Ill Crag

A long and hard day out in the Lakes in beautiful warm sunny weather, although it was quite hazy. I set out from Seathwaite and climbed all the way to Lingmell via Taylor Gill Force, Styhead and the Corridor Route. From Lingmell col I traversed below Pikes Crag to Lords Rake and ascended Scafell. From here I descended via Foxes Tarn and climbed via Mickledore to reach Scafell Pike. The journey back to Seathwaite took in a detour to the summit of Ill Crag before the descent to Esk Hause and the long descent along Ruddy Gill and Grains Gill to Stockley Bridge and the short walk back to the start.

The Hope Valley, The Great Ridge and Win Hill

A interesting walk in the Peak District starting from the Heatherdene car park. I made my way firstly to Hope and secondly Castleton before the climb to the summit of Mam Tor. The weather uptil then wasn't bad but as I made my way along The Great Ridge low clouds rolled in and blocked out the views. From Lose Hill I descended into the valley and the climbed to the final summit of the day, Win Hill. From there I descended back through the forest to Ladybower Reservoir and the car park.

Lingmell, Round How, Great End, Allen Crags, Glaramara, Comb Head and Thornythwaite Fell

An interesting days walk on the fells with pretty variable weather, although the wind was pretty strong throughout the day. The first summit of the day was Lingmell, reached via Taylorgill Force, Styhead and the Corridor Route from Seathwaite. I then returned to Lingmell col and traversed around to Round How before climbing to Great End. From here I descended to Esk Hause before the short ascent to Allen Crags and the undulating ridge leading to Glaramara and Comb Head. A long descent over Thornythwaite Fell led back to the valley and the Cumbria Way back to the start.

Lonscale Fell, Skiddaw Little Man, Skiddaw, Bakestall, Great Calva and Latrigg

A lovely wallk in the northern fells of the Lake District on a day that was warm, although it was pretty hazy to begin with. I set off from the Latrigg car park and took the Cumbria Way east, before turning left alongside Lonscale Crags to the summit of Lonscale Fell. From here I climbed Jenkin Hill and then Skiddaw Little Man before the high point of the route, Skiddaw. Now you just follow the fence to Bakestall, Little Calva and Great Calva before descending south west to the Cumbria Way. This is followed before descending to cross the Glenderaterra Beck and following the path on its east side to Derwentfolds. A path towards Brundholme was followed before turning right for the ascent to Latrigg, before the final short way back to the car park.

Pillar, Scoat Fell, Steeple, Haycock, Caw Fell and Iron Crag

An exciting and interesting wander on the western fells in the Lakes. I started from the Bowness Knot carpark and wander all the way along Ennerdale to the Memorial Bridge. The weather was coolish to start with and there was a pretty strong wind and the high tops had a cloud cap as well. From the bridge I followed a stream directly up the fellside towards Pillar Rock and into Pillar Cove. From the cove I carried on up and onto the Shamrock Traverse and finally onto the summit of Pillar where luckily the cloud had lifted. From Pillar I walked along the ridge to Scoat Fell and an out and back to Steeple before following the wall to to Haycock, Caw Fell and Iron Crag. I descended back into the valley by the side of Red Beck before wandering back around Ennerdale Water to the start at Bowness Knot. Unlike recently, with the cooler weather, the visibility was excellent with both the Isle Of Man and Scotland being clearly visible.

Eagle Crag, Sergeant's Crag, High Raise and Ullscarf

A really good walk on the central fells in the Lake District. The weather was really hot and sunny, but there was a nice cooling breeze in places and the long distance views wern't very good because of quite a haze. I set off from Rosthwaite along the Stonethwaite valley and climbed Eagle Crag and Sergeant's Crag en route to the high point of the route, High Raise. From there I descended to Greenup Edge before the gentle climb to the cairn on Ullscarf. I continued north to Low Saddle and then Blea Tarn before following the bridleway to Watendlath. A short climb and then a gentle descent led me back to the start at Rosthwaite.

Ben More and Stob Binnein

A steep and hard walk starting from the Benmore Farm on the A85 just outside Crianlarich. Just climb skyward on the grassy slopes from the farm until when nearing the summit the gradient slackens and a rocky path forms. Even though the weather was overcast the views were really good from the summit, although there was a cool wind blowing. A long descent and climb led to the summit of Stob Binnein which is almost as high as Ben More and has equally good views. From the summit I descended back to the bealach which led to the long, steep and rough descent into Benmore Glen. All that was left was the gentle stroll back along the glen to the start at Benmore Farm.

Buachaille Etive Mor

A classic walk in the Scottish Highlands with pretty good weather and some nice sunny spells. I started from Altnafeadh and climbed upto the summit of the first munro, Stob Dearg via Coire na Tulaich. I then followed the ridge and ascended the intermediate tops of Stob na Doire and Stob Coire Altruim to reach the second munro of Stob na Broige. I descended back to the col between Stob Coire Altruim and Stob na Doire to take the steep and loose descent into the Lairig Gartain. A nice gentle stroll down the Lairig Gartain led back to the start at Altnafeadh.

Ben Cruachan Horseshoe

A perfect day out on the Scottish mountains, a very interesting route taking in 2 munros and superb weather with blue skies and very little cloud. The climb upto Ben Cruachan was pretty tough, starting along the Cruachan Falls to the Cruachan Reservoir, alongside the reservoirs western side, followed by a steep climb to Bealach an Lochain and the final bouldery climb to the summit. I did an out and back to the Taynuilt Peak before following the ridge to Drochaid Ghlas and the second munro of Stob Diamh. From here a short descent and ascent led to Stob Garbh before a longer descent led to firstly the Lairig Torran col and secondly the Cruachan reservoir. From the reservoir the ascent route was followed to descend back to Loch Awe.

Beinn Dubhchriag, Ben Oss and Ben Lui

A superb and varied walk taking in 3 munro summits, starting from Dalrigh, near Tyndrum. The walk started in nice weather and a climb through a wood. Unfortunately the low cloud came in and the view from Beinn Dubhchriag disappeared. On the descent to Bealach Buidhe the cloud started to lift and by the time I had reached the summit of Ben Oss it had cleared. From Ben Oss a long descent and ascent led to the stunning summit of Ben Lui where the cloud had broken up a lot to leave some nice blue sky. From the summit I descended down the northern ridge of Coire Gaothach and down into the Coire and along the Allt Coire Gaothach to reach Glen Cononish and the long walk back to the start at Dalrigh

Whiteside, Hopegill Head, Grasmoor, Eel Crag, Wandope, Whiteless Pike and Rannerdale Knotts

A lovely walk in the north western fells in the Lake District. I started from the car park at the foot of Rannerdale Knotts and walked along the roadside to the Lanthwaite Green car park before climbing upto Whin Ben and Whiteside and the superb ridge along to Hopegill Head. From here Sand Hill was negotiated before the climb around Dove Crags to the summit of Grasmoor. A short descent and climb led to Eel Crag. The summits of Wandope and Thirdgill Head Man led to Whiteless Pike and the long descent to the Rannerdale Valley. A final short ascent got me to the summit of Rannerdale Knotts and a short descent back to the car park. The weather was sunny to begin with before it got a bit cloudier, although it was quite hazy all day but quite warm

Grey Knotts, Brandreth, The Gables, Kirk Fell, Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike

A really interesting and varied walk in the Lakes, taking in high fell and valley. The weather also was varied from overcast and hazy in the morning to some breaks and blue sky in the afternoon. I set off from the Honister Pass and climbed to Great Gable via Grey Knotts, Brandreth and Green Gable. After visiting the Westmorland cairn I descended to Beck Head before climbing to Kirk Fell and descending again to the Black Sail Pass and onto Ennerdale. A short wander along Ennerdale led to the ascent of Scarth Gap and hence onto Haystacks before finally climbing to Fleetwith Pike via Dubs Bottom. A final short descent led back to the Honister Pass.

Martindale Horseshoe

A lovely spring walk in the Lake District which started from St Peter's Church in Martindale. The route took in Steel Knotts, High Raise, Kidsty Pike, Rampsgill Head, The Knott, Rest Dodd, Angletarn Pikes, Beda Fell and finally Hallin Fell. The weather was pleasent with plenty of sun, but a cool breeze on the high ridges and quite a bit of haze in the distance.

Esk Pike, Bowfell and the Crinkle Crags

A perfect winters walk in the Lakes with beautiful blue skies and plenty of snow. I started from the ODG and walked along Mickleden, climbed upto Angle Tarn and onto Esk Pike. From here a short descent and ascent led to Bowfell and superb all around views of the fells. A descent led to Three Tarns and the superb ridge of the Crinkle Crags. After the Crinkles was the descent down to Great Knott and back down to Oxendale and Great Langdale via Red Tarn.

Helvellyn, Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike, Fairfield, Hart Crag and Hartsop Above How

Another absolutely stunning days walking in the winter wonderland of the Lake District. I set off from Patterdale and ascended Helvellyn via the Hole In The Wall, Red Tarn and Swirral Edge to some truely amazing views of the surrounding fells. From Helvellyn I followed the edge to firstly Nethermost Pike and then secondly Dollywaggon Pike. A steep descent to Grisedale Tarn led to the steep climb onto Fairfield and then onto Hart Crag. From here the descent along the Hartsop Above How ridge led back to the start at Patterdale.

Catstyecam, Helvellyn and St Sunday Crag

An interesting day weather wise for this walk to Helvellyn. I set off from Glenridding and ascended Catstyecam via its eastern ridge. Unfortunately low cloud drifted in just before the summit and didn't start to clear until I had reached Grisedale Tarn. From there I climbed to Deepdale Hause and onto St Sunday Crag where again low cloud drifted in. From St Sunday crag I descended back to Patterdale and back to Glenridding.

Robinson, Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy and Maiden Moor

Another cracking winter walk in the Lakes with the weather being pretty variable, from clear blue sky to cloudy and then clearing again later on. I started from Little Town and climbed to the summit of Robinson via High Snab Bank. From Robinson, Littledale Edge led to Hindscarth and Hindscarth Edge to Dale Head. Following this was the steep descent to Dalehead Tarn and the climb upto High Spy. The final top of the day was Maiden Moor before the descent through Yewthwaite Mine led back to the valley and Little Town.

Scafell Pike, Ill Crag, Great End and Seathwaite Fell

Another brilliant day out in the wintry Lakeland Fells. I set off from Seathwaite and climbed to Scafell Pike via Styhead and The Corridor route. From Scafell Pike I walked to Great End, making a detour to visit Ill Crag on the way. I started to descend down The Band, before turning right to reach Sprinkling Tarn and Seathwaite Fell. The final descent led to Taylorgill Force and back to Seathwaite.

Yewdale Fells, Wetherlam, Swirl How, Brim Fell and The Old Man Of Coniston

An amazing and unforgettable day on the Coniston Fells. It all started at the lakeside with pretty overcast conditions. My route led me over the Yewdale Fells to Tilberthwaite and then up Steel Edge to Wetherlam. Unfortunately the fells started to disappear into the clouds but fortunately by the time I started to climb upto Swirl How it had started to clear again. From Swirl How I followed the ridge via Brim Fell to The Old Man Of Coniston, from which the views were breath taking. The descent back to Coniston was via Low Water and the Coppermines Valley.

Great Gable and Green Gable

A absolutely amazing journey from Rosthwaite to the summit of Great Gable via Seathwaite, Taylorgill Force and Styhead. It was a hard climb to the summit in deep and uncompacted snow, but well worth it for the jaw dropping panorama of snow covered fells. From Great Gable I descended to Windy Gap and then climbed to Green Gable. From here the return journey was to descend back to Seathwaite via Sour Milk Gill and back to Rosthwaite.

Helvellyn, White Side, Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Sheffield Pike & Glenridding Dodd

A lovely walk on the eastern fells with nice sunny spells but a keen cool breeze on the tops. I set off from Glenridding and climbed to Helvellyn via Lantys Tarn and Striding Edge. The Edge was brilliant with no ice on it but there was a keen frost. I followed the ridge from Helvellyn around to Stybarrow Dodd and descended back to Glenridding, taking in Sheffield Pike and Glenridding Dodd.

Pike o Blisco, Side Pike, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell

A very good walk in cracking weather, blue skies and sunshine, although it was pretty cool first thing in the morning. I set off from the ODG Hotel and first climbed to the summit of Pike o Blisco. From here I descend to Red Tarn before deciding to climb Cold Pike before the Crinkle Crags. After the Crinkles I finished the day by climbing to Bowfells summit before descending down the Great Slab, the climbers traverse and The Band back to the start.

Cwm Pen Llafar Horseshoe

A brilliant and pretty quite walk starting from Gerlan near Bethesda. The walk started along the remote Cwm Pen Llafar before the summit of Carnedd Dafydd was reached via the grade 1 scramble of the Llech Ddu Spur. A pleasant high level traverse took in Carnedd Llywellyn and Yr Elen before the descent back to the start in Gerlan. The weather was really nice with warm sun and good visibility.

Y Lliwedd, Snowdon and Yr Aran

A absolutely brilliant walk upto the highest point in Wales via a route not normally taken. The start was along The Watkin Path, before leaving it to climb to the remains of the Lliwedd copper mine, Bwlch Lliwedd and over the twin peaks of Y Lliwedd. From here the descent led to Bwlch Saethau and The Watkin Path again for the climb to Snowdon's summit. From the summit the descent led down Bwlch Main and Snowdon's south ridge to Bwlch Cwm Llan. From here the final summit of Yr Aran was climbed. The east ridge was descended and The Watkin Path reached again, before the gentle stroll back to Nantgwynant.

Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach

A really interesting outing in the Glyder mountains. The route led upto Llyn Idwal from Ogwen Cottage and a small rising path led upto Cwm Cneifion. From here The Senior's Ridge scramble was followed to Glyder Fawr. The ridge and the scramble over Castell y Gwynt led to Glyder Fach. The descent route was back over Castell y Gwynt and down the Y Gribin ridge scramble to Llyn Bochlwyd and Ogwen Cottage. The weather was quite warm with a nice blue sky and clouds, but with a pretty strong wind on the Glyders ridge.

Kinder Scout Edges

A long but very interesting walk from Edale taking in the complete circuit of Kinder Scouts edge paths. The views constantly changed from Edale and The Great Ridge in the south, to Derwent Edge in the east, Bleaklow in the north and Kinder Reservoir and Manchester in the west. The weather was warm with a few glimpses of sun and blue sky from time to time.

Buckden Pike, Tor Mere Top and Great Whernside

A lovely sunny warm walk around Wharfedale starting from Kettlewell. From Kettlewell the route climbed upto Moor End before descending down to the Dales Way near Starbottom. From here the Dales Way led to Buckden and Buckden Beck upto Buckden Pike. Gentle walking led me to Tor Mere Top and Little Hunters Sleets before the climb up onto Great Whernside. From here the descent route was to Hag Dyke and along Dowber Gill Beck back to Kettlewell.

Pen, Scafell Pike, Scafell and Slight Side

A long walk up through Eskdale to Lingcove Bridge, through the Esk Gorge before reaching Upper Eskdale. A steep climb upto Pen followed before a gentler climb to Scafell Pike. From Scafell Pike I descended to Mickledore and reached Scafell via the Foxes Tarn route. I then walked to Slight Side and descended into the valley and left this path to arrive at the path that zig-zags back down into Eskdale and back to the start

A brilliant walk around the Mosedale skyline taking in Pillar via the High Level Route, Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow. The weather started off quite clear and sunny but it clouded over quite quickly and became very hazy. It cleared up a bit later in the day however.

Gavel Pike, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield, Hart, Dove & Little Hart Crags & High Hartsop Dodd

A walk around the eastern fells with a slightly different start along Deepdale from Brothers Water, before climbing upto Gavel Pike, St Sunday Crag and Fairfield. The weather uptill then wasn't very good with low cloud and the odd bit of rain. The cloud then started to lift and a bit of sun started to appear on the walk to Hart Crag. From here I went to Dove Crag, Little Hart Crag and finally High Hartsop Dodd before descending back to Brothers Water

Ingleborough and Scales Moor

A very warm, sunny walk from Ingleton upto the summit of Ingleborough via Falls Foot. To extend the walk I descended to Humphrey Bottom and Chapel-le-dale and then climbed the other side of the valley to Ellerbeck. The walk back to Ingleton was along Scales Moor, dropping down Twistleton Scar End and along the River Doe.

Fan Frynych, Craig Cerrig-gleisiad & Fan Fawr

A nice sunny and warm walk starting from the Storey Arms and descending down the valley on the Taff Trail. From here the walk led up over the A470 and climbed to Twyn Dylluan-ddu, Fan Frynych and Craig Cerrig-gleisiad. Open moorland led upto the climb to the final summit of Fan Fawr. A descent down Cefn yr Henriw leads to the Beacons Reservoir and the Beacons Way back to the start

Glaramara, Allen Crags, Great End, Green Gable and Base Brown

A very interesting walk from Seathwaite in very variable weather conditions which were generally sunny spells but with several hail showers and strong winds. The route led up Hind Gill to Glaramara and then onto Great End via Allen Crags and Esk Hause. From Great End the descent down The Band leads to Styhead and Aaron Slack leads upto Green Gable. From Green Gable, Base Brown was the last summit before descending back down to Seathwaite alongside Sour Milk Gill.

Coniston Old Man, Brim Fell, Grey Friar, Great Carrs, Swirl How and Black Sails

A nice walk from the Walna Scar car park on a day which started very murky with low cloud, but cleared up to give some nice sunny spells. The walk started by first climbing the Coniston Old Man, and then Brim Fell, followed by Grey Friar, Great Carrs and Swirl How. The descent down the Prison Band followed with a climb to Black Sails. From here the south ridge of Black Sails led down to Levers Water and the path through the Boulder valley back to the car park

A wonderful if hard walk on a lovely sunny day with only a bit of cloud in the afternoon. Scafell Pike was reached via Esk Hause and Rossett Pike from Great Langdale. The return journey was back over Esk Pike to Bowfell and descending from here via the climbers traverse and The Band back to Great Langdale

A short walk from Capel Curig on a day that started with rain and low cloud, but which lifted during the morning to higher cloud and a few glimpses of blue sky. The hills weren't very high but gave great views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

A superb walk in lovely warm sunny weather with a nice little scramble upto the summit of Cnicht with a very good view of Snowdonia. From Cnicht the walk took in the remains of the Rhosydd slate quarry, Moelwyn Fawr, the cliffs of Craigysgafn and Moelwyn Bach.

Great Gable Traverse

A interesting walk around the complete Great Gable girdle path from Styhead, then to Beck Head, Windy Gap and finally to Styhead. A return to Seathwaite was made via Sprinkling Tarn and Ruddy Gill. The weather was sunny but hazy to begin with but low cloud enveloped the area from about dinner time onwards. It cleared later on so it was a good chance to visit Ashness Bridge.

A really good walk, sunny to start with but soon clouding up. From Lingmell, Scafell Pike was completely in the cloud but when I had climbed to the summit it had cleared. The clearing didn't last for long for when I had got to Broad Crag it was completely in the cloud again.
