On the way from Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík.
The big white church, Hallgrímskirkja, is the landmark of Reykjavík.
The guy in front of the church is Leifur Eiríksson, the first european to find America. He's the son of Eiríkur rauði (Eric the Red), the one who found Greenland. Eric the Red was Norwegian but had to leave Norway because he got into some trouble with the Norwegians. He exiled to Iceland but later he also got into some trouble with the Icelanders and had to sail to Greenland.
The Icelandic way is to take your shoes off in the hallway before going into the apartment.
Our mail delivery system. The mail comes to the windowsill and everybody finds their own from the piles.
The view down to the beach from the front door of our building. The mountains look different every morning.
View from Laugavegur (the main shopping street) down to the North beach.
Another view from Laugavegur down to the North beach.
The white house on the right is the office of the prime minister. The statues on the left depict the independence of Iceland: The man closer to us is the first prime minister of Iceland, Hannes Hafstein, and the other one is king Christian IX of Denmark, who's presenting Iceland it's first constitution in 1874 (Iceland was a colony of Denmark). From this angle though the act does not look quite so noble.
Laugavegur, don't ask me why?
Clouds. And birds. On my way to dance.
This is a fake geysir close to Perlan, a water tower with a nice view.
There's a statue called "Dancers", I think, in front of Perlan. There are four hollow characters that look like they are dancing. Here are two of them and the fake geysir in the backgroung.
The fake geysir from the top of Perlan and behind (what you can see of it) is the view south from Perlan. What you see is actually not Reykjavík anymore but Kópavogur, the second largest town in Iceland.
View towards west from the Perlan.
View North-West: You can see the white church and the mountains on the other side of the bay. We live close to the white taller building in the far right edge of the picture close to the shore.
View North: Cute houses and the mountain Esja.
This is a small lake in the middle of Reykjavík where there are a LOT of birds. When you go there the swans will fly from the other side of the lake to check if you have treats for them. It's really funny when twenty something swans are swimming after you when you walk along the lake.
This was a very greedy swan family.
Finally they decided that we wouldn't give them anything after all.
Ducks
So what's this swan doing?
This one is drinking I think.
Morning light from our livingroom window.
This apartment looks so cosy.
Flowers in the park on our way to the university. Hallgrímskirkja in the background.
On the way to Reykjavík University. The mountains with new snow this morning.
This is the North beach where I go running.
Pretty cool running scenery, eh?
There are always some birds.
It's chilly, please wear a hat.
Cycklers are thinner because they exercise more?
View of the city from the North coast. This is my view running back towards home, not so nice. :)
The stores have weird opening hours. This one is open Mondays to Fridays 10-18, Saturdays 10-15, every other Saturday 10-16 and on the first days of the month 10-18. But don't think it's that easy. In reality the stores are open whenever the owner feels like it.
All my pictures are towards North.
This is from Laugavegur, the main shopping street. Really.
Close to the church: a tiny house and graffiti.
A concert in a gallery during Icelandic Airwaves.
Cute railing :)
Many of the windows have lace curtains.
A cool railing! :)
A side alley, they all look like this.
A cat in the alley.
Laugavegur, don't ask me why... But they were gone after the Airwaves.
The moon on my way to dance.
When it's darker it looks pretty cool from the low hill top. Like one was entering a big city.
The same moon.
This is outside Reykjavík towards south on the road that goes to the airport. There are a lot of these small houses and huts. Some of them are in better condition some in worse. A lot of them are summer cottages we think.
It looks like America.
Yup.
Indeed.
On Laugavegur.
A pretty wooden house?
Made of metal panels.
They all are.
Even dogs wear the icelandic woollen sweaters.
From our backyard. Some of the houses look quite desolate.
The North beach again.
There's a boat shaped light on the beach further away.
It was the sun reflecting on this statue.
New expensive houses with a view to the sea.
Birds.
