Snow Cat

I made a snow cat yesterday, Saturday March 28th. Friday had been a beautiful, sunny day full of spring and on Saturday I woke up to a silent snowfall. The snow made me instantly happy as it always does and I went out to shovel the path and make my snow cat.

Barnacle Geese in Viikki

We went in search for barnacle geese yesterday. They were supposed to fly over the birdwatching tower in Viikki to overnight on the Vanhankaupunginselkä bay. They came. They were about 3000 and they were amazing. For a longer story check out the blog as usual.

Pinjainen

These are from Pinjainen (Billnäs), an hour drive west from Helsinki. The river is Mustionjoki and these are taken close to the old Ruukki (which really is an old Finnish metal company but has given names to many many old hydropower plants and metal factory buildings along the riversides at least in the Southern Finland).

Mari And Kari Visiting

Mari and Kari came by the second weekend of March. We went swimming to Laugadalur and to the Blue Lagoon, we saw swans at Tjörnin and ate Icelandic fish and chips. Tommi, Kari and Mari also took the Golden Circle tour on Saturday but I had to work and so couldn't go with them and hence no pictures from there. But I hear they had a fun trip. Thanks for the visit, Mari and Kari, we had a great time!

Reykjavík Sightseeing

We took a Reykjavík City Sightseeing bus tour last week when my grandma was visiting. The tour wasn't the greatest ever, but we did see the main sights. From the pictures you may deduce that there really isn't terribly much to see. ;) But afterwars I walked back to the City Hall to take pictures of some very cool icicles.

New Year's Eve 2007

We had New Year's Dinner at Šašlik, a Russian restaurant in Helsinki. Kirsi and Leevi invited me and Tommi along with Miina, Mari, Franci and Daniela. We had champagne and blinis and vodka and Baked Alaska à la Catherine the Great, which is ice cream. And fun. The pictures were taken with my new camera!!! I'm still learning all the fancy things one can do with it...

These pictures were taken in Ann Arbor, Michigan during my ten day stay in November. I didn't take too many pictures, there was so much to do every day from early morning till after midnight every day that there was no time to remember to take the camera out of the bag. Kirsin synttärit

Kirsin 50-vuotis syntymäpäivä-juhlia vietettiin torstaina 4.10 Helsingin Villa Kivessä. Valitettavasti suurin osa kuvista on pimeitä ja/tai epätarkkoja. Pahoitteluni tästä, pitänee hankkia parempi kamera. Taikka sitten on vain niin, että kuvien laatu vastaa illan vauhdikasta menoa!! Kuvat ovat kronologisessa järjestyksessä. I didn't take too many pictures during the conference in Helsinki, but here are a couple from Belge's teracce one evening and a couple from Saturday when we were wandering in Kaivopuisto with Marie and Jasun after the conference. Mökki Weekend

We had an amazing Mökki Weekend in August between Jyväskylä Summer School and the Ahlfors Conference in Helsinki. We had reserved a mökki (a summer cottage) near Lohja. The place was called Villa Kumpare and it was super cool, the cottage was smart and the place was beautiful. And we had SO much fun. The gang included me, Marie, Qian, Kevin, Karoline, Pekka, Satu, Kai, Marshall, Jana and Daniel. Here are my pictures (and a couple of Qian's and Marie's). I hope that somebody else will post theirs as well soon... :)

Villejä lupiineja

These are big-leaved lupines. They typically grow on banks of roads around June in Finland. "Villejä lupiineja" means "wild lupines" and it's a title of a song by a Finnish singer J. Karjalainen. The lupines in the pictures are also wild and they grow in Kumpula, on the banks of the road I walk to work. There are also a couple of other pics taken on my way to work.

Korkeasaari

Last Thursday we went to Korkeasaari. It's the Helsinki Zoo. It was quite hot so almost all the cats were just sleeping in the shadows. Korkeasaari is an island (saari = island, korkea = high). There is a bridge but the most common way to get there is to take the ferry from Kauppatori.

Venlan ja Sampan häät

Venla and Samppa got married on Saturday July 14th in Pirunkirkko, Suomenlinna. Although I didn't take many pictures, the whole party was as beautiful as the evening sky in these pictures.

Venlan polttarit

Venlan polttareita vietettiin lauantaina 30 kesäkuuta. Päivä käynnistyi Konalasta ja jatkui kaupunkisuunnistuksella keskustaan. Fazerilla Venla puettiin häiden teeman mukaisesti Ansa Ikoseksi tai paremminkin Kulkurin valssin Helenaksi, jota Ansa Ikonen esitti. Lounasta nautittiin Herttoniemen kartanolla, jossa elokuvaa aikanaan kuvattiin. Seinäkiipeilytuokion jälkeen ajoimme Kattilan saunalle Nuuksioon, jossa suoritimme asiaan kuuluvat morsiussaunataiat. Ilta jatkui vielä pitkään Helsingin yössä.
