The huge National Palace of Culture in Sofia.

Wolfgang Maier and Dejo Savkov who gave us a tour through Sofia.
This decaying concrete monster, built in 1981 and nowadays surrounded by a fence, is called "Bulgaria: 1300 years".

The Church of St Nicholas, also known as the Russian Church.

A sign at Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The German translation is ... interesting, in its own way.
Hotel Samokov in Borovets. The venue of RANLP 2007 (Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing).
Apparently Holger Wunsch doesn't like to be photographed during a talk.
Holger and Wolfgang in front of our hotel.
Holger and quite a few Leva that he was forced to get from a cash machine (just like every one of the attendants) to pay his hotel bill.
The Venice. This is where we had a couple of meat dishes.
Wolfgang and Sandra Kübler, presumably working on parsing-related issues.
The view from my hotel room.

Lilja, power-tanning.
Lilja, resting after a nice little hike up one of the ski pistes.
Lilja, freaking out because of some little beastie that's bugging her.

I want snow and my skis. Now.
The view down one of the black slopes.
A (hopefully) abandoned ski jump.
The ski jump as seen from the jump-off platform.
The ski jump again, this time shot from the area where the ski jumpers used to touch down. Surprisingly, this is a huge concrete slab that doubles as a bridge.
Wolfgang thinking "¿Que?".
Lilja right next to the bridge.
Rumour has it that this tacky mansion was built by one of the most influential Bulgarian mafia bosses who told the internal revenue office that his enormous wealth is due to a very successful potato business. He was shot in Amsterdam three years ago and since then this building is just sitting there as is.
Fleisch ist mein Gemüse ("My side dish is meat.").
I'd be a very rich man if I had a penny for every time one of us said "Let's just go to the pectopath."
A traditional Bulgarian dance during the conference dinner.
Compare Holger's style of bowling ...
... with Wolfgang's.
Wolfgang and Lilja are forced to take a break while I'm throwing a strike (one of Holger's photos).

Wolfgang, Iva and myself, looking a bit knackered after five intense hours of workshop. (This is one of Iva's photos.)
Marina Santini and myself. The next time we meet I'll ask her why she's still wearing her name tag at the airport. ;-) (This is another one of Wolfgang's photos.)
