Day 62: Sussex to Jersey City

61 miles from Sussex, NJ, to Jersey City, NJ. The morning was foggy with light rain, but the day cleared up nicely. After twenty or thirty miles of riding through beautiful forests, hills, and resoviors, we entered the greater New York City/Jersey City metropolatian region. During the final ten miles of the ride, we rode as a big group of about 190 cyclists and received a police escort to Liberty State Park where we dipped our tires into the Atlantic Ocean!

Day 61: Dalton to Sussex

82 miles from Dalton, PA, to Sussex, NJ. Today we climbed overe 6,800 vertical feet--more than any other day of the Tour, including those days in the Rockies. I rode with Josh Krabbe, Eritia Smit, and Josh Nyenhuis the entire day. Three things strike me a lot about this area of the country: There are continuous rolling hills, all of the farms seem to be quite small compared to those in the Midwest, and the entire area is populated--there are even houses in the middle of hilly forests.

Day 60: Binghamton to Dalton

58 miles from Binghamton, NY, to Dalton, PA. After a good night at a friend's apartment in Endicott, NY, I found my way back onto the day's route. I was sad to leave New York (we entered Pennsylvania today) because the roads in New York were far superior for cycling than those in any other state.

Day 59: Romulus to Binghamton

76 miles from Romulus, NY, to Binghamton, NY. Josh Nyenhuis, Pieter Periboom, and I rode together for the morning because we all wanted to visit Taughannock Falls, which is the tallest waterfall (215 ft.) east of the Rockie Mountains. It was beautiful. I then parted ways with the two of them to visit my brother in Ithaca and tour around the Cornell campus. I stayed the night at a friend's apartment in Endicott, NY, and it was quite a joy to see him.

Day 58: Byron to Romulus

76 miles from Byron, NY, to Romulus, NY. During the first part of the day, we rode past a lot of small farms over rolling hills. About two thirds into the day, we were treated to an excellent lunch stop at a farm by a local church. Near the end of the day, we entered through the Finger Lakes region of upper New York State. The region is absolutely gorgeous with many cute small towns and beautiful farms overlooking one of the lakes. We spent the night on the edge of beautiful Seneca Lake at Sampson State Park.

Day 57: St. Catharines to Byron

77 miles from St. Catharines, ON, to Byron, NY. We crossed from Canada into the United States today at the Rainbow Bridge, which is right next to Niagara Falls. So, we had an opportunity to see the Niagara River and the Falls again today. Upper New York State seemed to have a surprising number of empty fields; however, that made for many beautiful fields of wildflowers.

Day 55: Hamilton to St. Catharines

46 miles from Hamilton, ON, to St. Catharines, ON. I rode on the sweep team, meaning I was one of the final cyclists on the road today. Like the past couple days, we had many church stops. Plus, numerous families set up signs welcoming us. We rode down the Niagra Escarpment, which is a several hundred foot tall cliff overlooking Lake Ontario.

Day 54: London to Hamilton

78 miles from London to Hamilton. We had four "official" church stops with refreshments along the route; plus dozens of families sat alongside the road cheering us on and a few even offered food or drink. I rode with Hans Doef, Josh Krabbe, and Andrew Aukema for the whole day. My legs were already sore from yesterday's time trial, but riding with the three of them (especially Josh) made my legs even more sore because of the pace at which we rode. All of the stops broke up the day nicely and made our ride to Redeemer University College seem short.

Day 53: Chatham to London

74 miles from Chatham, ON, to London, ON. Today, I, along with about 25 others, participated in a 40.6 km (25.2 mi) individual time trial organized by one of the cyclists. The time trial followed quite flat roads, but we fought a mild headwind. Throughout the day, I was impressed by the number of people and churches who welcomed us in a royal way.

Day 52: Richmond to Chatham

56 miles from Richmond, MI, to Chatham, ON. We crossed the border into Canada as a large group on the Marine City-Sombra ferry. Upon entering Canada, we received a tremendous welcome with lots of people and great food. Unlike Iowa, southern Ontario really is flat!

Day 50: Grand Rapids to Laingsburg

63 miles from Grand Rapids, MI, to Laingsburg, MI. I rode with Aaron Carpenter for the entire day, and we arrived before noon--even after stopping at a church in Lowell for refreshments.

Day 48: Grand Haven to Grand Rapids

45 miles from Grand Haven, MI, to Grand Rapids, MI. Today was primarily a "glory ride" in the sense that numerous "one day only" riders joined us and many people greeted us along the side of the road.

Day 47: South Haven to Grand Haven

47 miles from South Haven, MI, to Grand Haven, MI. I rode with Josh Nyenhuis and Jim Amels the whole day, and for the first half of the ride we rode with Gayle Harrison, too. Given that we rode very fast yesterday and that today was a short ride through touristy areas, we took the day really slowly and enjoyed the scenery.

Day 46: Chesterton to South Haven

79 miles from Chesterton, IN, to South Haven, IL. I rode with Josh Nyenhuis and Jim Amels all day and others joined us for part of the day. For the final 50 miles, the three of us plus Pieter Pereboom and Josh Krabbe pushed a very fast tempo (perhaps averaging about 23 miles per hour). It was quite a thrill.

Day 45: Palos Heights to Chesterton

53 miles from Palos Heights, IL, to Chesterton, IN. We started the day with an 8am "send off" service at Trinity Christian College. Then, a group of us took an alternative route to visit Roseland Christian Ministries, a homeless shelter in the Roseland area of Chicago. This provided a unique opportunity to see some of the poverty in the south side of Chicago.

Day 44: Woodstock to Palos Heights

83 miles from Woodstock, IL, to Palos Heights, IL. I rode with Josh Nyenhuis and Jim Amels the whole way. Most of the first half of the ride was along the Fox River Trail, a (mostly) paved path that follows the Fox River through Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, and Aurora. Today's ride was extremely stressful given the abundance of fast-moving traffic, narrow roads, and potholes.

Day 43: Madison to Woodstock

81 miles from Madison, WI, to Woodstock, IL. I rode with Jim Amels for the entire day, and we joined Barb Mellema, John Vandersteen, Louis Bosma, Jerry Kobes, and Pete Van Noord for the final 25 miles or so. We crossed into Illinois, but sadly there was no "Welcome to Illinois" sign because we were on a back-country road instead of on a main highway. So, the "State Line Rd" sign had to suffice. Along the way, a ministry to disabled individuals found out that our route went right by them, so they handed out bottled water. A handful of us stopped, and we had a ton of fun riding on their paved (read: wheelchair accessible) nature path.

Day 41: Fennimore to Madison

72 miles from Fennimore, WI, to Madison, WI. I rode with Josh Nyenhuis for the day. It sprinkled in the morning, but fortunately the rain soon ceased. One unique part of the day was riding on a hard-packed dirt bike path for about 8 miles. Josh and I pushed each other hard, but we made it into Madison by noon.

Day 40: New Hampton to Fennimore

100 miles from New Hampton, IA, to Fennimore, WI. I rode with Katrina Miller, Justin Helmer, and Stephanie Webb for the day. We crossed over the Mississippi River and entered Wisconson. The route was quite hilly, especially near the Mississippi River valley. The four of us had a great late lunch at Coaches Family Restaurant soon after crossing the Mississippi.

Day 39: Algona to New Hampton

113 miles from Algona, IA, to New Hampton, IA. I was on the sweep team today, meaning that I helped serve breakfast in the morning and then loaded the gear truck with everyone's tent bags. We (the sweep team) were the last to leave, but we were on the road by 8:15am. I rode with most of the sweep team until about noon, and then I took off on my own because I wanted to get into camp sooner. So I ended up riding the final 75 miles solo.

Day 38: Sioux Center to Algona

113 miles from Sioux Center, IA, to Algona, IA. I rode with Katrina Miller, Eritia Smit, Hilena Zylstra, Josh Krabbe, and Stephanie Webb for the entire day. Despite being very long, we had an excellent day talking and goofing off while riding. (Plus, a strong tailwind made the day go very quickly.) It rained for several hours in the morning, but eventually cleared up. Today was one of my favorite days on the Tour.

Day 37: Sioux City to Sioux Center

61 miles from Sioux City, IA, to Sioux Center, IA. I rode with Katrina Miller the whole day at a leisurely pace in hopes of trying to recover from being ill. Iowa, like Nebraska, turned out to be more hilly than I thought. For many people, myself included, today's 61 miles were like a recovery day given that we've been averaging about 90 miles for the past seven rides and given that our next three rides are all 100 or more miles.

Day 36: Fremont to Sioux City

89 miles from Fremont, NE, to Sioux City, IA. I felt quite sick today, so I rode quite slowly in hopes of not taxing my body too much. I was struck by the fact that as soon as we crossed into Iowa the rolling hills common in Nebraska immediately disappeared and the roads became remarkably flat.

Day 34: York to Fremont

96 miles from York, NE, to Fremont, NE. I rode the entire day with Andy Hiemstra and Jim Amels. Because of my nagging cold, I thought today was probably one of the most difficult days of the Tour so far.

Day 33: Minden to York

94 miles from Minden, NE, to York, NE. I rode with Aaron Carpenter and George Vander Kuur for portions of the ride and finished the day solo when Geoge went to look for a place to get a drink. It was a long, hot, and hard day due to the persistent head/cross winds. On the bright side, however, one of the town on the way, Sutton, was very welcoming of us cyclists.

95 miles from McCook, NE, to Minden, NE. I started the day with George Vander Kuur but rode most of the day with a group that included John Vander Steen, Barb Mellema, Andy DeVries, Peter Van Nord, and others.

93 miles from Wray, CO, to McCook, NE. I started the day solo but joined Josh Nyenhuis early in the morning. We rode together for much of the day until I joined George Vanderkur and Eritia Smit for the final 30 miles.

86 miles from Fort Morgan, CO, to Wray, CO. I rode with Eritia Smit, John Pierce, and Josh Nyenhuis for the first part of the day. The scenery consisted almost exclusively of flat corn fields and cattle ranches.

Day 29: Denver to Fort Morgan

89 miles from Denver, CO, to Fort Morgan, CO. I rode on the "sweep team" today, which means that I was part of one of the last groups on the road. Eastern Colorado is quite flat and less exciting than the mountains. I rode with Josh Nyenhuis today, who just joined the Tour in Denver.

About 90 miles from Winter Park, CO, to Denver, CO. We road over Berthoud Pass and reached our highest elevation of the Tour: 11,300 feet above sea level.

Day 26: Kremmling to Winter Park

35 miles from Kremmling, CO, to Winter Park, CO. I treated today as a rest day and went very slowly. We rode through a beautiful canyon along the Colorado River and then stopped several times at cafes and gas stations along the route.

Day 24: Dinosaur to Craig

88 miles from Dinosaur, CO, to Craig, CO. We took US-40 the entire way. The route passed through only one tiny village along the way. (Indeed, when leaving Dinosaur, a sign on the side of the road said, "No gas next 56 miles.") The route consisted mostly of rolling hills. I rode solo for much of the day because I wanted to maintain my own riding tempo in order not to expend too much energy while I try to recover from a cold.

Day 23: Duchesne to Dinosaur

90 miles from Duchesne, UT, to Dinosaur, CO. The route was somewhat hilly but the wind and desert heat were brutal. I rode with David Tietsma for the first half of the day and with Christeena Nienhuis for the second half. At the very end of the route we entered the state of Colorado.

Bike Ride to the Mackinac Bridge

At the end of high school, I rode my bike from my home in Ann Arbor, MI, to the Mackinac Bridge. I completed the three hundred mile ride in three days.
