ICBE Kampala Convening of Phase 1 Grantees - June 7-8 2011

Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art Concert - Jul 12, 2011

Starting July 12 to August 13, TrustAfrica's MDG3 grantee RAES, in collaboration with Artworks for Change, will be presenting Artworks For Change's exhibition titled "Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art". This exhibition which displays the works of 32 contemporary artists from 25 countries will "address violence against women and girls globally and their basic human rights to a safe and secure life".

Two Decades of Democracy and Governance

Scholars, activists and policymakers gathered June 20-22 in Dakar for a three-day conference on democracy and governance in Africa. The focus was on the last two decades, when the number of electoral democracies in sub-Saharan Africa grew from 4 to 24 before slipping back to 18 in the last three years. Participants will discuss the various factors contributing to these changes, as well as what needs to be done to ensure that democratic governance delivers the goods in terms of achieving developmental goals. The conference was organized by CODESRIA, the UN Economic Commission for Africa, and John Hopkins University's School for Advanced International Studies with support from TrustAfrica.

Agriculture meeting

In June 2011, we hosted a meeting about our agricultural advocacy project. Participants came from Oxfam GB, ActionAid, IDEG, TrustAfrica and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with a common interest in strengthening the voices of smallholder farmers.

Bamako "Boot Camp"

In January 2011 TrustAfrica sponsored a "boot camp" in Bamako, Mali, to build the knowledge and skills of activists from civil organizations, grassroots movements and political parties in seven francophone countries. The goal was to help participants develop their capacity to mount effective advocacy campaigns. TrustAfrica organized the gathering in connection with its MDG3 Project, which seeks to curb gender violence and expand women's political participation. Caravan to combat gender violence

TrustAfrica has provided support for Comité de Lutte contre les Violences faites aux Femmes (CLVF) to organize a number of caravans through Senegal to raise awareness about gender-based violence. We tagged along for an 8-hour ride through the streets of Dakar and on to the nearby community of Malika. These photos show some of the participants as well as reactions from men, women and children along the way.

Pan African Parliament

Bhekinkosi Moyo, our Program Director, was a featured speaker at the October 2009 Conference on Transforming the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) into a Legislative Body. Held at the parliamentary headquarters, the conference explored the transformation of the PAP into a legislative body, the domestication of African Union decisions and the advocacy of African Parliamentary Knowledge Network with the different Parliaments in Africa. Dr. Moyo’s talk built on TrustAfrica’s ongoing efforts to foster a closer working relationship between civil society and the PAP. These efforts include co-hosting a consultative dialogue with the Parliament in May 2009, which addressed its transition from an advisory body to a legislative body and the link between citizen participation and Africa’s integration. Liberia civil society forum

In April 2009, we convened a forum in Monrovia where CSOs from throughout the country came together to take a hard look at themselves, develop a better understanding of the challenges they face, and discuss ways to collaborate with one another as well as with the national government. More than 90 people took part, including former civic leaders who are now in government. Together they drafted a resolution outlining steps they can take to strengthen the civil society sector, such as forming an NGO Advisory Council and developing a Code of Conduct for NGOs.
