All year round riders of the Essex Sunday section. A favourite ride taking in Magdalen Laver (photo) and Fyfield. To be 70 years young is sometimes far more cheerful and hopeful than 40 years young.
Ornamental village signs are a feature of the area covered by North East Essex section who meet on Tuesdays. A country code: Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time.
Black Horse at Paslow Common in Essex. A favourite meeting place for cyclists from all clubs in the area especially on Tuesdays. "A" section ride on Thursdays. Traditional start and finish for annual 100m and 100km Fun Rides. Anyone can be young. You have to have a little character and wisdom to get old.
Hitchwood Lane nr. Preston. The inaugural run of Stevenage and North Herts section was on 8th January 1981. A family picnic is held annually on the second Thursday in August at Wimpole Hall.
Terling village in Essex. The Southend section cycling past beautifully kept old cottages and colour washed houses. Terling Place - a splendid Georgian house - is the Strutt family home. In 1836 an hereditary peerage was granted to the head of the family who became Lord Rayleigh. Also there is a windmill where a man was whirled round on the sails in the film "Oh Mr Porter" starring Will Hay. A wide ford across the River Ter is 3ft deep and has caught out many motorists. All Saints Church has an unusual sundial on the brick tower.
Haultwick Herts. Venue of the annual reunion organised by East Herts section.
Much Hadham. On a favourite route used by Essex 'B' who ride on Thursdays. The Club Riders' Code: No overtaking of the leader except on hills or in exceptional circumstances - then wait. On the call 'Oil Up' - or similar - riders single out at once. Gaps to be left in large groups to allow traffic to overtake. Behave with consideration and do nothing to infuriate other road users or exacerbate a fraught situation. All cycles to be in roadworthy condition. Pace set by leader to be such that slower riders are catered for.
Coldrum Stones near Tottiscliffe, Kent. South-East section meet on Wednesday and Sunday each week seeking out lanes despite the monstrous M20 and M26 cutting across the area. Rather a short life in the saddle than a long life by the fire.
Red Lion in Yardley Hastings. A typical Northamptonshire building of stone and thatch. Bill Norris on his trike in his 90th year is East Northant's oldest member and is pictured here with founder members. Started in 1988. A 100km Fun Ride is held annually in June. "I'm not old - just a recycled teenager."
Offham Hill on the South Downs nr. Lewes. Surrey and Sussex Section ride in this area on Tuesdays and Fridays. Go forth under the open sky and list to Nature's teachings.
The Bedfordshire Section visit 7 pubs in turn across mid Beds - from Woburn Sands to Stanford and meet for lunch. The photograph was taken at The Evershott - famous for its bacon baps. The Section was formed around 1972 and meets on Tuesdays. A good laugh is like sunshine in the house.
Riding into another year from Birchwood Green. St Albans section formed in 1972 with runs on Tuesdays for Regulars and shorter routes for Potterers. Old age is a good reason for not succeeding - but never an excuse for not trying.
