My Orchids

Unless otherwise stated these are my orchids. Maleny is situated on a plateau which is some 380 m above the coastal "plain" and has, therefore, a climate conducive to the growth of a range of orchids. NB. Tea & Rubber Plantations.

Photographs relating to my time in tea and rubber plantation management in Sri Lanka [then Ceylon] 1952 - 1969. "Gardens by Ian"

"Gardens by Ian" was my business name when I was designing and landscaping. The quality of design, materials and work was very high. Also the choice, quality and placement of rocks were a feature of this work. In all new work the plants used were specifically chosen for their positions and were small because small plants establish quicker and soon overtake initially large ones - within reason! No plastic sheeting was ever used as a weed inhibitor or anything else. Each design was developed with reference to the clients' answers to a questionnaire I supplied and discussion with them. These photographs cover the period 1977 - 1981 approx. and have been "revived" from a very faded state. Prior to my going bankrupt in about 1980 as a result of the collapse of the building industry in Victoria, I designed and created nearly one hundred gardens. 	"This is #9 Sowter Court, Donvale, Victoria, Australia, which I landscaped c.1980 at a cost of $125,000 excluding paving, drives etc. The 1 acre block is triangular with the wide base at the street and the tip tilted to the right. The dense plantings roughly indicate the steep block. To the right of the pool is a 4-5m high embankment with the orchard above. The house cost $750,000 then. The front is 3 storeys and the rest 2.
