Haul pack
One of the many pits at Area C
Newman at sunset. This town has a population of about 4000.
Mt Whaleback (facing east) is at 5km long one of the largest open cut mines in the world.
Dust rising up from a blast
This is taken at the north-eastern end of the pit (facing west). Several haul packs line up for the digger to take away the low quality 'haematite' and dump it as waste. In the far background preparations are being made for the blast (see other photos in this album).
People talk about the impressive size of the haul packs but you can see why I was more impressed with the digger.
These haul packs are capable of carrying in excess of 200T of ore.
This is about as good as the iron ore gets - roughly 70% Fe. It is surprisingly brittle.
