AAWT Kiandra - Tharwa 11-17 Apr 2012

Trip from Kiandra to Tharwa along the northern end of the AAWT of 118Km by Phillip Crampton, David Beasley, and Evan Smith all from Bundanoon, John Bowes, Ant Burridge from Moss Vale and Ian Burridge form Brighton UK, plus Greg Hutchison from Canberra. We had excellent weather and detoured to Blue Waterholes to link up with Alan Key and Greg Dean as well as Honeysuckle Creek to link up with Graham Scully. We also climbed Booroomba Rocks. Was a truly magical trip with a great bunch of guys - now dubbed "The Graghoppers"

2012 03 20 William Woodbridge Living on Lake Ginninderra

The CT reported on 20th March that the UC student, William Woodbridge, who has been living on a raft in Lake Ginninderra has been ordered to quit the lake by the 30th March. Gee whizz they are 'party poopers' our local Government. What he has done was incredibly innovative, albeit it not very legal. However he has added a bit of colour to our otherwise dull days cycling and walking around the lake. On 20th I went to the lake to take some pics and was surprised to meet William who paddled his dingy ashore in order to go to Uni lessons. He confirmed he has been served and is also on the ACT Housing list. It seems that he can not afford the prices for accommodation at the Uni. He seems like a nice young guy from Grafton and is studying industrial design (I think?)

2012 02 17 Urambi Hill Recce

Tuggeranong Stione Wall area as a recce for Melba Shed. Nice open walking on grassy trails with some cattle grazing for fire reduction. Excellent views of Tugeranong area and Murrumbidge valley near Mt Tennant. Stormy day with thunder but avoided heacy rain. Phew!

2012 02 09 Cycling Gungahlin Forde

Cycled with 4 other Melba Shed members rode from Ha Ha Bar out and around Lake Ginninderra then up to Gungahlin's Yerrabi Pond, then into Forde and around its border with Mulligans Flat, then down the path to the west and back to Yerrabi Pond and home. Total distance from Melba return was 43.0Km (Greg's from Florey with short cuts was only 40.6Km) Riders: Peter H, Bob S, Bill M, Phil H, Greg H. 2012 01 13 Farrer Ridge - Mt Wanniassa

8.3Km walk around Farrer Ridge and Wanniassa Hills as a recce for Melba Shed walk. Best parts are the area around Farrer Trig and between there and Mt Wanniassa. The ridge along Mt Wanniassa provides superb views over Tuggeranong, down to Mt Tennent, across to the BrIndabellas and down into Wanniassa and Fadden. Parking is an issue. Gaunson Cres Wanniassa is not the best. There is a dirt track off Sulwood drive juts past the Cres and around to near the Underpass on Erindale Drive. probably the best spot.

2011 09 27 Namadgi Yankee Hat Shed Recce

Walk from Car Park to Yankee Hat paintings. Middle Ck cascades and Rock Shelter, and Gudgenby axe grooves of 13.4Km by Stuart and Greg. Yep we found the Rock Shelter although further upstream then expected Ran into a tiger snake (black with yellow stripe) just north of Yankee Hat on way down to Middle Creek. It was slow in the grass but scary all the same in late Sep!

2011 09 11 Kama & Molonglo NR

Recce walk for Melba Shed. From Kama NR Car Park along William Hovell Drive (north side), through underpass and along River Walk down to Molonglo River and back. Total distance 6.1Km (more than they state). Part along Molongo is actually Molongo Nature Reserve. Kama Nature Reserve was gazetted in 2009 to preserve Yellow Box woodland and grasslands. Nice easy-medium walk. Can get to the Molonglo River in one spot. Access to car park is 2.1Km south of the Drake Brockman roundabout turn left onto small dirt track. 2011 08 27 Mulligans Flat North

A 7.9Km walk to work out a route for a Shed walk. Great views and weather. You can see right down to Woden, Mt Coree, Wind generators at Lake George etc. LS on the map means Lock Spit (For the ACT border marking at every change of direction a survey post was installed and a near by tree blazed. if there was no tree available they used a line of rocks to indicate the change in direction. These lines of rocks are called Lock Spit).

2011 05 20 Dunlop Grasslands

7.8Km walk as recce for a Melba Shed walk. Followed Johnny Boys walk of March 2011. Some interesting sites such as Charnwood homestead and Crowajingalong ruins, Osage-Orange trees, Bicentennial National Trail, West Belconnen ponds and the mac mansions built on the edge of Dunlop Turned out longer than I thought but only took 2 hrs. Too many new fences didn't help my appreciation of it

Great Dividing Trail - Ballarat to Bendigo - May 2011

8 of us from Southern Highlands and Canberra walked most of the stages between Ballarat and Bendigo, Vic on the GDT (Goldfields) Track between 2nd and 9th May. Due to staying at caravan parks and having two vehicles we had to take turns to drive and walk. We also had some sickness that laid us low 6 out of 8 of us at different times

2011 04 07 Hall Shed & Walk

Visit to Hall to check out their Mens Shed facilities and find out about their special bushwalk around the village. Its not the National Trust walk. Its a 4Km circular walk right around the village mostly outside the village. There is no published info except for a street map near the cafe. Its fairly flat although there is a total climb of 50m. Lifeline Bookfair Mar 2011

Another massive bookfair held between 25-27th March in the Budawang Pavillion of EPIC, Canberra. Yes 12,925 people attended and Lifeline ACT raised some $471,000 towards its running costs for the Counselling Service. Some 150 volunteers set up the fair and manned it during the three days. There was of course many setup days and preparation days going back months.. Books are already being packed for the Sept fair. Of course these things are a huge demand on volunteers who come from as far away as Melbourne and cover all age groups

2010 10 08 Aranda Bushland

Recce walk for Melba Shed. Starting at the CP on Bindubi St and walking along Old Weetangera Rd FT to link path down to the Snow Gums area towards Glenloch Interchange. Checked out underpass across to the Cork Plantation. The back to the Road and took a marked trail up towards Aranda and explored right to Aranda and then came back down and across to the car. Distance 5.5Km, 2 Hours. 2010 10 07 Mulligans Flat Walk

6 of us met at the Shed 8.30AM and started walking just after 9AM from Mulligans Flat car park (It's in Forde. You take Horse Park Drive following signs to Mulligans Flat. i.e. take Francis Forde St and then left onto Amy Ackman St) We strolled around this new reserve following bird trail. We took 3 hours 20 minutes for the easy 8.1Km stroll with several stops at the Woolshed to chat to the rangers, one of whom was from Boorowa and knew of Don, as well as at the Bird Dam and at the mysterious bundle of bricks that were scattered around. There were a Birds of Mulligan Flat brochure and a Mulligans NR brochure available in boxes near the main gate (G2 on the map). The CP is around 13Km from the Shed by road. We also detoured to the site of the original Mulligans Flat School and the Quartz Ridge in the south west corner. We also learned about mistletoe fungus growing on gums and killing them off and saw several examples.

2010 10 04 Gungahlin Hill - Gungaderra NP

Recce walk for Melba Shed. Starting at the Gungahlin Hill CP on Barton Hwy and walking along the ridge down to gap and then north to top of hill (trig GN45) overlooking back of Palmerston, then down onto Grasslands of Gungaderra to the SE, finding a water race and following it way down to dam near radio stations Then west back to hill (trig GN44). Then down to a dam to the west and then back to the car. Distance 6Km, 2 Hours. 2010 10 01 Palmerville - Percival Hill NR

Recce walk for Melba Shed. Starting at the Palmerville site (north Evatt) and walking along the wetlands west bank adjacent to the CSIRO site to the Baton Highway roundabout and overpass. The around and to the top of Percival and down west to the dam and then back across the north ridge to Gininderra Ck and down the west bank to the roundabout, across the rock dam, down the bike path and under the road and back to Palmerville. Lifeline Bookfair Sep 2010

This is one of the geat bookfairs in Australia. Held twice a year usually in March and September in the Budawang Pavillion at Exibition Park in Canberra (EPIC). It takes nearly a week to setup and runs over three days, Fri-Sun These pics show you some of the setup and how the hall changes as well as some of those who visited Taking pictures is quite hard because of the sun streaming in through the high windows.

2010 07 04 Namadgi NP - Bogong Swamp and Creek

Short trip from Yankee Hat Car Park across Bogong Swamp and up some of Bogong Creek (Didn't make Bogong Falls at 673093 6041997). Altitude 1000-1100m. Falls at about 1250m Was quite cold i.e. 8C, wet and slippery underfoot. Even fallen sticks were slippery. At 2PM still thick ice in pools alongside the tracks. Weather was nice and sunny! 2010 06 25 Mt Ainslie Canberra

Walk from War Memorial up the Kokoda memorial trail to top and circuit around down bike track next to road to old quarry. Then siddle around foot pad, down a FT, cut across a gully, link to track around to Kokoda trail at Brigade Hill point. Nice 6.2km walk. 2010 06 13 Black Mountain Canberra

Walk from Belconnen Way car park to top and circuit around the Forest Track CP to top 2.1Km. Forest Track 2.1Km around the top. This track goes right around the top of the mountain but at about 750m when the top is around 811m. Its a nice and fairly level track and is little used. Lifeline Bookfair 16-18 April 2010

ACT Lifeline's Autumn Bookfair held at EPIC in Canberra. Held twice a year in Autumn and Spring it is s major fund raiser for the Lifeline telephone counselling service 131114. The event takes place over a three day period and atracts some 10,000 people looking for bargains in second hand books, valuable books and DVDs, CDs, magazine etc. Lifeline has a large number of volunteers that work in the book warehouse and at the bookfairs.
