This is the northbound beginning of what is currently known as US 425, one of the grid-busting US 4xx series designated in recent years. This was once the northbound beginning of US 65, which was truncated in favor of US 425. Blame the transportation departments in Louisiana and Arkansas for this steaming pile. We're also on US 84 West.
US 84 West/US 425 North intersect Lower Woodville and Homochitto here as they make their way to the Mississippi River.
The twin Mississippi River bridges are visible in background as Mississippi's last set of reassurance shields for US 84 West and US 425 North fly by.
Crossing into Louisiana on US 84 West/US 425 North. This bridge is the older of the two.
Touching down in Louisiana on US 84 West/US 425 North. As you enter Vidalia, you also enter Concordia Parish.
The first “major” intersection in Louisiana is with LA 131. Louisiana's signage of multiplexes can be rather hit-or-miss, as shown by which highway is shown as the “through” one.
After the intersection with LA 131, both US 425 and US 84 are signed. Curiously, US 425 has priority.
The next highway intersected by the US 84/US 425 couplet is LA 3180.
Turn left at the light to use LA 3180.
US 84 and US 425 continue on toward Ferriday.
Next, US 84 and US 425 will encounter LA 3196.
Turn right for LA 3196.
If you're viewing these in the “Former US 65” album, now you know why it's named that and not for US 425. US 65, sadly, no longer runs here, these shields to the contrary.
Now in Ridgecrest, US 84 and US 425 prepare to intersect LA 3232.
Aaah, my eyes! Going along US 84 West/US 425 North, this is your first experience with a Monochrome... (cue ominous music) ...as it is, turn left for LA 3232.
Entering Ferriday on US 84 West/US 425 North.
Inside Ferriday, US 84 and US 425 prepare to intersect LA 15 and LA 568.
Mouthful. Go left for US 84 West/LA 15 South, to Jonesville, Jena and Winnfield. Go right for LA 568. Go straight to stay on US 425 North, which picks up LA 15 North for a very long stretch. Whew. Looking for US 65? Stay on US 425/LA 15 North to Clayton, you'll find the as-of-2005 end there.
Leaving Ferriday on US 84 East/US 425 South.
US 84 East/US 425 South intersect LA 3232 here.
Entering Ridgecrest on US 84 East/US 425 South.
Left: LA 3196. Straight: US 84 East/US 425 South, to Vidalia.
US 84 East/US 425 South intersect LA 3180 at this light.
“South US 425/East US 84” trailblazers past the intersection with LA 3180. In another time and place... well, another time anyway... US 65 would have been signed instead of US 425, and then the sign order would have made more sense.
Welcome to Vidalia. the last city US 84 East/US 425 South pass through while in Louisiana.
As with the other direction, only US 425 is shown as through. Take a right here for LA 131. We're almost out of Louisiana.
The green sign marks the state line. That's all... just a simple “Mississippi.” You'll have to continue on for the grand signage.
Behind the van, from left top to right bottom: “TO US 98,” “TO US 61,” “East US 84,” “South US 425.”
Entering Mississippi on US 84 East/US 425 South, you are faced with this welcome sign, and this fairly steep climb. Welcome to Natchez.
El Camino Real trailblazer just after crossing the bridge into Mississippi. Louisiana's are brown, Mississippi's are green. Go figure...
Peel off to the right here for US 61 South. Stay in the left two lanes to remain on US 84 East. No mention of US 425 on the overhead means...
END! US 425 South. This is also a former END! of US 65 South. As it is, US 84 and US 61 enter a concurrency here. Note the trailblazer for US 98 - it may have once began here.
