A Buddhist Pilgrimage to India
The Lord Buddha was born as Siddharta Gautama in 563 (BC), a prince of Shakyas, a prosperous and peaceful State bordering present day India and Nepal. He grew up in comfort, married and had a child. In his twenties he became aware of a less fortunate life than his own. He began his search for meaning by wandering the countryside as an ascetic.
After a time he sought meaning through severe austerity by sitting in a cave at Mahakala for several years until he become badly emaciated. Convinced this was not the true path he left the cave and headed to Bodh Gaya where, while sitting under a bodhi tree, he found insights into the ‘middle way’. It was the beginning of what became Buddhism. For the next thirty years he wondered north eastern India telling others of his path to enlightenment.
Gillian, Graham and I traveled that path over 20 days in December, 2007. The photos here were taken on that journey.
