171.5 km ride from Tokyo to Miura peninsula and back. This was my 4th bike trip on the Miura peninsula, but the first time I cycled all the way down and back up again, instead of using the train for part of the trip. I picked what could have been the windiest day of the year for it, which made for some spectacular waves and a lot of sand and salt water in the air.

2012-10-08 Route 35-Doshi village 187 km loop (public)

Oct 8 was a public holiday in Japan this year, plus it was the anniversary of receiving my Bike Friday bicycle. I celebrated it by doing a 187 km loop from Tokyo through two mountain valleys over three mountain passes, starting before sunrise and getting home just after sunset.

12_09_30 Tomin no mori

185 km bike ride to Lake Okutama via Tomin no mori on the "TCC Boob ride" course (http://ridewithgps.com/trips/949882). I left home around 04:30 and returned around 18:00 (13 1/2 hours). The weather forecast predicted fog in the morning and rain from a typhoon in the afternoon/evening and it was right on both predictions. Most of the day was sunny but I spent the final few hours battling wind and rain. The course climbs from sea level to about 1200 m, then descends back down to about 500, climb back up the same 1200 m summit and descends back down to sea level again.

12_07_14 Neko bus side car

"Neko bus" (cat bus) is a character from the animated movie "Tonari no totoro" ("My neighbor totoro"). It's a phantastic large cat-like creature that has seats inside and windows like a bus, but runs and jumps like a cat, covering huge distances in a short time. I found this "neko bus" themed sidecar with an old Suzuki motor bike in the mountains near Hanno on the ride back to Ome during Deej's Ome Temple Loop bike ride (186 km, 16 hours, climbs up to 20% grade).

12_02_05 Miura Loop (public)

On Sunday, 5 February 2012 I did my longest ride since 1980, for a total of 136 km. On that day James (user "FarEast" on TokyoCycle.com) organised a 140 km group ride around Miura peninsula south of Tokyo. His ride started at 8:00 in Yamashita park, Yokohama, followed the coast south to Yokosuka and on to Misaki on the southern tip of the peninsula, where lunch was planned. The ride continued north-west along the coast via Zushi and Kamakura to Enoshima and from there up the Sakaigawa until Yamato City and back east to Yokohama. It was planned as a "long slow distance" ride, but for a much fitter group of riders than myself. I dropped off near Yokosuka and finished the ride on my own. Instead of heading east from Yamato I headed north to Machida, from where I returned by train.

Mid-winter hike on Mount Daibosatsu in Yamanashi, Japan. This was my third climb of the mountain since last autumn, but my first in winter. We used crampons, as there were about 30 cm of snow. There were very few people around. The views of the Southern Alps and of Mount Fuji were impressive.

11_11_09 Shimokitazawa

I spotted a Pashley-Moulton APB bike in Shimokitazawa on a 10.5 km after-dinner ride. This is the third time I see a Moulton bike in Tokyo. The APB is a cheaper version of the Alex Moulton AM range and the precursor of the Moulton TSR. It was in production from 1992 to 2005.

This was a 12 km hike to the top of Mt Oyama in the Tanzawa mountains near Isehara, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. The altitude gain is over 900 metres, with an average grade of 18%. There is a Shinto shrine on the mountaintop and two temples near the bottom and around one third up the mountain. We got good views of Mount Fuji, but Sagami Bay on the Pacific was mostly obscured by haze.

11_10_02 Mt Mito (public)

Hiking to Mount Mito in Okutama on Oct 2, 2011. We took the train to Musashi Itsukaichi station, then a one hour bus ride to Tomin no Mori. From there we hiked past Mito Otaki waterfall and up to the peak. We broke for lunch, then took a trail to the north, reaching the shores of Lake Okutama in the afternoon. We took a bus to Okutama station, where we soaked in a nearby onsen, before heading back to Tokyo. Altogether it was 6 1/2 hours of hiking (including the lunch break).

11_09_25 Mt Mitake (public)

Hiking trip to Mount Mitake (御岳山 Mitakesan) in the mountainous Okutama area in the far west of Tokyo. On top of the mountain is Musashi-Mitake Shrine (武蔵御嶽神社 Musashi Mitake Jinja). We hiked up from Kori station on Ome line after we found that access from Hatonosu station was blocked because of damage from the previous typhoon. The area has many old style thatched houses, shrines and other ancient buildings besides great hiking trails in steep gorges and lots of green.

Hiking trip to the ridge of Mt. Daibosatsu in Yamanashi prefecture, west of Tokyo. It is counted among the '100 mountains of Japan' and offers excellent views of Mt Fuji, of Yamanashi prefecture and of the Southern Alps.

Pictures of Benzaiten shrine at Inokashira Park (inokashira koen) in Tokyo. Benzaiten ("Sarasvatî Devî" in Sanskrit) "is the goddess of everything that flows: water, words, speech, eloquence, music and by extension knowledge." (Wikipedia) The rain was flowing when I cycled there and visited the park, which was only appropriate for the location. The shrine is set on a little island in a lake in the park, with water fountains surrounding it in the lake.

Upper Antelope Canyon in the Navajo tribal area near Lake Powell, Arizona. It is a slot canyon in a sandstone formation, created by rushing water. Its amazing shapes and colours make it one of the most photographed locations on Navajo land in the US South West.

Sarusuberi (百日紅, "crape myrtle" in English) bloom for about 3 months in summer. This album is a selection of trees found in the gardens around Aobadai, Yokohama. My daughter and I walked around and took those pictures for her school project.
