Dala horse. The tradition of the Dala horse began in Sweden in the 1600's. Loggers would sit around the fire at night and carve figures. The horse was a favorite one. Then they would take them to the villages and people would paint them and give them to the children.

Norwegian iron. You dampen the clothes and press them by using the top board and rolling the clothes over the round board. A suitor would leave the long flat board (which he had carved) on the doorstep of his girlfriend. If it was gone in the morning then he knew that they were engaged. Kind of an interesting way of proposing with an iron.

Garry Kunkel's relatives live here right on Route 2. So we went by to say hello to Garry's Uncle Dick.
Uncle Dick in his living room telling stories about the Kunkels. Uncle Dick was an education administrator, and a representative in the North Dakota Legislature. He is very smart, very charming, and very well connected in North Dakota. He said that the governor of ND was one of the people being considered as a running mate for McCain. He knows the governor.
Grandpa Kunkel owned three saloons in Michigan so Grandma Kunkel got him to move to North Dakota and farm. She was a real teetotaler.
I met Garry when he was about this high. He would run around and all he could say was "hubba hubba."
