Panorama of the industrial port
Boarding the ferry leaving the mainland to go to the small northern island, Rebun
We pass the island of Rishiri on the way
Rishiri
Setting up camp on Rebun
Panorama of the campground. Obviously, I was the only one there (the green tent)
My tent again off to the left
I found this amusing
In following with the theme of Japan's obsessive taming of nature, here are landslide preventers
Beautiful cliffs and water on a long walk on Rebun
The tip of the peninsula on the left is the northern-most point of Japan
The not-so-grand finale at the northernmost point
Rebun's food - from left to right: Fish roe, Sea Urchin, and fish.
On a walking path around Rebun
Drying fish
Small shrine on the end there. I tried to climb to it but it was a bit too steep/dangerous
Small fishing village
On the ferry back to the mainland
My guide's and my pack reserving our spot in line for the train
Heading to the bus from the Asahikawa station, near where our hike starts
Passing through rice fields to get to the white-caps you can barely see in the distance
Heading to the lift to take us to our departure point
The steep, snowy beginning of our hike.
Hiking in Japan's largest national park
Soon we entered the enormous bowl of the former volcano which we would hike 270' around and descend on the other side.
Looking in towards the bowl
We spot our cabin poking out through the snow, off to the bottom-right
Descending into the bowl
Have to use a special winter-entrance because the door is completely snowed in
Our first cabin
It was quite dark
But the flash makes everything seem bright
Our cabin is off to the left, I went for a short hike
30s exposure at night - the light is my guide coming out to brush his teeth
Dinner!
Still some element of activity at this ancient volcano
Getting ready to set out on day 2 - the freezing rain and fog about to begin
Leaving our cabin
Had to change gloves since mine got soaked
I was very happy to finally see our second cabin after a long day of searching
Getting ready to head out on day three
The weather started out nice on day three
Looking back at our second cabin. Much easier to see compared to the day before.
But it got foggy quickly. Thankfully no rain though!
At the peak of the volcano on day 3, getting ready to descend to head back to Sapporo
Saw some huge off-gassing spouts on our way out
I went up for a closer look
The gondola heading back down
The gondola to nowhere
My guide and I get some R&R at the local onsen before catching the bus & train back
We stop for some noodle-soup before catching our train
Leon my guide knew the store owners
A much needed hearty meal ate in a hurry before our train
A delicious (and weird) Alice in Wonderland-themed dinner before leaving Japan with a meetup.com group
