"+Michael Novak I tried a variety of distros with this unit and eventually settled on running the Project Sputnik iso. It's 12.04 with the machine-specific kernel and policykit ppas and a small selection of common dev tools preinstalled.

Using gnome-session-fallback in 3D mode (Compiz accelerated). To be fair, I can see what Ubuntu is doing with Unity. In its default configuration, Unity saves a lot of vertical real estate compared to gnome classic. Still not a fan, though. Also installed Synapse to get the indexed launching capability of Unity launcher without the UI or Canonical phone home."

"Of course the most important thing is it runs Linux (in this case Ubuntu 12.04) flawlessly. Good battery life, working WiFi, suspend and resume. That it looks and feels nicer than Macbook Air while doing so is just icing on the cake."

"Packs a decent punch for an ultraportable ("ultrabook"). My beta test model only has 4GB memory, but the shipping units ("XPS 13 Developer Edition") have 8. Only downsides are it can run warm, as the fan is tuned to be rather quiet, and the only available screen res is 1366x768.

Not the most ideal machine if you build large projects locally and definitely not a gaming machine, but it works nicely for light Java, web dev, high level stuff, and dev ops."

"Well let's be honest with ourselves-- this is free webmail. We should expect that ads would be a part of the experience. At least they're executed somewhat tastefully."

"Good thing they included ads at first day already! I couldn't live without them! :D"
