"+Michael Novak I tried a variety of distros with this unit and eventually settled on running the Project Sputnik iso. It's 12.04 with the machine-specific kernel and policykit ppas and a small selection of common dev tools preinstalled.
Using gnome-session-fallback in 3D mode (Compiz accelerated). To be fair, I can see what Ubuntu is doing with Unity. In its default configuration, Unity saves a lot of vertical real estate compared to gnome classic. Still not a fan, though. Also installed Synapse to get the indexed launching capability of Unity launcher without the UI or Canonical phone home."
