11X15 Kickoff in Milwaukee

WISDOM’s new 11x15 Campaign was announced yesterday at a Press Conference in Milwaukee. SOPHIA was well-represented at the event. Members of our sister affiliates – MICAH (Milwaukee), RIC (Racine) and CUSH (Kenosha) - also participated. Simultaneous kick-off events were held around the state with the other WISDOM affiliate organizations. 11x15 is a WISDOM–wide campaign to decrease the number of incarcerated people in Wisconsin and promote alternatives to incarceration in order to make our communities safer and healthier. 2011 Good Friday Sacred Walk

Good Friday again brought SOPHIA members and friends from the Christian Faith traditions to walk and witness together in downtown Waukesha. On the third annual Sacred Neighborhood Walk, participants joined in scripture, song and prayers at places serving those particularly impacted by the state budget repair bill and proposed budget.

SOPHIA prayer vigil for Immigration laws

Arizona’s immigration law (SB 1070) will go into effect on Thursday, July 29. Faith Communities across the country will be coming together in solidarity to pray for the members of our immigrant communities. We gather to pray for the renewal of a broken system. We pray with a desire to strengthen the spirit of mutual understanding and respect and to ease the tensions fueled by anger, fear and hatred. We pray for the Spirit's power to open a way for both opportunity and security, for both the needs of new immigrants and the hopes of citizens.

Affordable Housing Forum

The keynote speaker was Bernie Juno, Executive Director of Hebron House of Hospitality and member for the Waukesha County Housing Action Coalition. She addressed the problem of insufficient affordable housing in the county and some of the successes of Hebron House of Hospitality in meeting the county’s housing needs. Participants in the forum also had the opportunity to find out where to get reputable low-interest loans, to win door prizes, and to learn how to support state and local policies to create more homes for the workforce.
