Dec11-Myakka

Myakka River State Park is east of Sarasota, but is another world of old Florida. The river flows were too low for our planned paddle, but it was a good time regardless.

We camped Thanksgiving weekend at Hamilton Branch State Park, on the banks of a very low Lake Thurmond. The Fork Area Trails were nearby, offering glorious mountain biking. Thanks to Tony for making the reservations, and to Joy for letting us share hers and Robin's site!

Sharon and I enjoyed 10 days in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, splitting our time at two different resorts. The weather was wonderful, with only one rainy day and lots of time to enjoy the beach. Good snorkeling and diving required a drive to the southern coast. The travel involved overnights in San Juan and Miami.

The SBA Fat Tire Festival had two sessions of the Mountain Bike Clinic. The morning session had a delightful crew who learned the basics and then rode Bridge To Bridge as mountain bikers. The afternoon session consisted of Sam's daughter and friends, who did a pretty good job on their own.

A wonderful Saturday kayaking at Hugenot Park as the tide came in. The end of the beach is closed for the rookery that's cropped up, and so it was quite the cacaphony paddling around them. It was so much fun, we went back Sunday for another paddle and a few more pictures. Thunderstorms cut the day a but shorter, but it was still a delight.

Xcaret is an aquatic theme park. It has water and caves and butterflies and sea turtles and Mayans, and is simply a wonderful place to float arounda nd have a fun time. The evening show is quite the spectacle.

We spent a week at Sandos Playacar, the southernmost resort in Playacar. That means that south of our resort was empty beach and jungle. Being the off season, it wasn't too crowded, and we had a wonderful time enjoying the beach and the grounds and the suft and the ruins that are all over the resort and the walk to Playa del Carmen to the north.

The SBA's Spring Bicycle Festival was a delight, from Thursday's storm bands and pot luck dinner to Sunday's final rides and cleanup. After the inital soaking the weather was perfect, cool in the evenings and sunny and warm during the day. Mary and Dale spent many hours planning and preparing, and their hard work paid off as everyone else enjoyed the fruits of their labor, participants and volunteers alike.

A 9 mile paddle and a boardwalk hike at the park to see the manatees, Will led us on a beautiful loop. There wasn't a lot of green foliage for the birds to hide in, and the warm day brought all the turtles out to sun! Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve is a delightful chunk of land between Tamiami Trail and Alligator Alley with cypress swamps, open fields, and alligator ponds. It's interspersed with private holdings, and abuts Picayune Strand State Forest.

We paddled the Turner River from the access on the Tamiami Trail down to Chokoloskee, wending our way through narrow cuts through the mangroves and connecting ponds, and then on to a wider river and Indian shell mounds.

The Black Water River heads south from Collier Seminole. It wends two paths to the Gulf, one through Mud Bay. We started to cross, but with the tide going out discression prevailed and we chose the other path lest we run out of water in the Bay.

Shark Valley is a delightful bike ride along a canal filled with alligators and birds. The plentiful water attracts the gators in the dry season. On the way back, we took the Loop Road, a mistake because of its horrid condition. 5 mph top speed gets old for 10 miles.
