2012_05_18 to 21 Havasupai Trip

Kathy Sharp's annual trip to Havasupai is a popular one. This year was no exception. Weather was very cooperative and we had a pretty good number of first timers on the excursion, including some from Oregon and Washington states. All went well though. Rogil and I explored some other areas we were interested in and had a fine time.

2012_05_06 VOAz in Salome Canyon

Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona (VOAz) have constructed and maintain the exit trail from the canyon mouth to the main trail and also work all parts of that primary trail as well. For years Rogil has been providing canyon 'tours' of sorts for interested VOAz members who've been working on the trail on Saturday. Here are this year's photos! What a wonderful day it was. We hope you had a grand time! And - THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORK!

2012_04_27 to 29 Middle Fork of the Gila River

A fun weekend with Marion and Dennis in the Gila Wilderness was envisioned, but a toe-meets-bedpost -- toe loses incident left Marion with a fractured phalange. After deliberating several other options Rogil and I decided that we'd just go ahead and try the something like the originally planned itinerary anyway. So, we were off for the TJ Corral trailhead by the Gila Cliff Dwellings and enjoyed a couple nights along the Middle Fork of the Gila River, including several dunks in the Jordan Warm Springs. Fine weather, few people and fine territory all helped make this exploration of the local terrane: a super trip.

2012_04_21 Baboquivari Peak

A request from afar lead us to tackle this southern AZ peak. Rick Craycraft (Mazamas, Portland, OR) had contacted Rogil over two years ago for help in satisfying some items on his "peaks wanted" list. Well, we finally got it coordinated and completed on a fine April day. Rogil and I, Rick, with fellow AMCers Cheryl Beaver, Nick Hoffman, and Jutta Ulrich got the hike-climb combo done in 13 hours "plus change". What a super day! AMAZING!!!

2012_04_06 to 08 Catwalk and S Fork of Whitewater Creek

Rogil and I were interested in getting out for a couple nights and selected the S Fork of Whitewater Creek in the Gila Wilderness. Fortunately this also allowed us to visit the Catwalk built along an old pipe route for the mines of the 1890's in Whitewater Canyon. Two good things bundled into one adventure. We had a fine time of it and really enjoyed hiking along the perennial stream and other areas of the wilderness.

2012_03_30 to 04_01 Blue Springs

Rogil has been talking about doing this Blue Springs on the Little Colorado River trip for a long time. It's not something done frequently and we finally got the opportunity to do it by helping Frank and Julie as a preliminary trip for their upcoming backpack trip. Because of the descent down through the cliffs it's known to be a challenging “hike” (and I'll vouch for that). It sure gives one a terrific sense of accomplishment, however, to have done the trek and experienced the wonders it has to offer!

2012_03_10 Sven Towers II and III

Eric called and asked if we'd like to join him in checking out his grad climb (Sven Tower II). Sounded like a fine idea and we quickly accepted, with the caveat that we'd like to test drive our grad climb (Sven Tower III) too. They are on adjoining peaks. We had a very successful day and had a good time too.

2012_03_03 and 04 San Antonio

We took this weekend to visit my daughter Erica - birthday celebration time. Was a fine opportunity to visit and on Saturday Erica thought we'd enjoy going to Enchanted Rock State Park, just N of Fredricksburg. Right again! We had a great time hiking on this granite pluton and the kids got a great kick out of having made it "way up there" and back again. Was super to see everyone, get in a b'day dinner of sorts, and help around the house just a bit too.

2012_02_26 and 27 Willow Spring Round About

After a very productive Saturday working in the garage I decided to take 1/2 my Sunday and Monday and treat myself to a hike. A quick check of the Carlson/Stewart new book “Superstition Wilderness Trails West” revealed a number of great suggestions. I opted for at hike into Boulder Canyon to find Willow Spring. Selecting the suggested alternative returns of an off trail route to connect up with Peralta Trail and the old Quarter Circle U Trail to get between Peralta and Dutchman trails provided for more adventure. Hard to have more fun in about 24h!

2012_02_20 Grand Canyon II - Ribbon Falls

The intervening day of this two night trip is always up for grabs. We came prepared with about four options, but the rain, having possibly made some of them a bit trecherous, lead us to select a hike to Upper Ribbon Falls. Mike Spahle had been there before and offered to hike along, then Craig and Jeanne decided to join us as well. So --- after a filling Phantom Ranch breakfast we started literally up the N Kaibab trail toward Upper Ribbon Falls. Best guess is that the round trip distance for our "light day" hike was close to 13 miles.

When Sally's yearly GC trip had a couple spots open up Rogil and I were invited to join the group. These are fun excursions and it is ALWAYS good to get back to the GC. As usual it was an "interesting" trip - a stormy start, a great day hike, and then the haul back out again.

2012_02_11 and 12 Turkey Flat and Walker Basin

What to do for a birthday weekend??? We had numerous options, but ended up selecting a mountain bike ride in the Guajolote Flat area S of Patagonia and then a exploration up Temporal Gulch Road to Walker Basin. Great times. Thanks to Marion and Dennis for treating us to dinner at the Velevt Elvis in Patagonia as well. Fantastic weekend!

2012_01_20 to 22 Gold Striking Out - Ringbolting In

Another weekend to visit some hot springs along the Colorado River by Hoover Dam. This time one night at Goldstrike on the NV side and then back across the river to Ringbolt/Arizona hot springs. Great weather (except for a blustery Saturday afternoon) and good times in the two canyons that contain the springs. We surprised Marion and Dennis with a group of Tucson Backpackers at Ringbolt and had a fine time with that group as well.

2012_01_06 to 08 Burro Creek

Our previous success at visiting Kaiser Warm Spring with Marion and Dennis stimulated an interest in returning to see more of Burro Creek, explore a mine area further, and just obtain a bit better familiarity with the locale. Nice drive and we had the canyons and spring to ourselves for the weekend, with the exception of a few examples of the bovine persuasion. Great hiking weather and we discovered a number of interesting things. A bit cool, but delightful time!

2012_01_02 Two B's - Barnhardt and Ballantine

First "off" day of the new year and Michele wanted to go for a hike. We considered a variety of options and ended up with the first option of hiking up Barnhardt Canyon in the Mazatzals because it was going to be too warm nearer Phoenix. We got coll alright... When we ran into what appeared to be a VERY lengthy shadowed stretch of canyon we opted to head back to the TH. Needing a bit more exercise we stopped at the Ballantine TH on the way back. It was a good uphill route for a few miles before we turned back and returned home. Few photos, but a fine day!

2011_12_28 Haunted Cyn Complete, Gov't Hill and Paradise

Final day - Finish off the Haunted Canyon Trail, return to hike out Paradise Trail and visit the peak of Government Hill while I am at it. Simply covering all aspects of the trails in this area. Campsite by the gate above Dirt Tank was not in the trail this time, but was right along side it. Oh well, another beautiful calm night to sleep out under the stars.

2011_12_27 Haunted Canyon

Time to continue the trek on the Haunted Canyon Trail - out to the Pinto Creek TH. Retrospectively it was a good thing I kept going yesterday because it made some later parts of the trip a bit easier to accomplish. But now... onward to the TH and then I'll retrace to return toward the Tony Ranch area. I filtered enough water there to make the rest of the trip and then UP the hill to find a camp spot in the vicinty of the Dirt Tank.

2011_12_26 Bull Basin and Haunted Canyon

Time for another year's end backpack in the Superstitions. These three days are devoted to three trails that are at points S of the Miles Trailhead. First day was Bull Basin Trail and a part of the E end of the Haunted Canyon Trail. Let the fun begin. BTW - I use Jack Carlson & Elizabeth Stewart's excellent book 'Superstition Wilderness Trails East“ to prepare for and enhance all my trips to this area.

2011_12_02 to 04 Redfield Canyon's Logan Cliff House

On the western fringes of the Galiuro Mountains Redfield Canyon presents its awesome chasm to visitors. We crashed Marion and Dennis' trip to join them (and maybe even assist a bit) in visiting a house crafted into the side of this amazing gorge. Built back in the 1930's think about remote and add the challenges of delivering goods to build a stone and lumber house on a rock bench in an isolated canyon - stout hearted folk! We visited this intriguing construction: picking our way through essentially untracked canyonside in and out of the canyon from the south. What a white finish to the weekend as well - but you'll have to look at the pics to figure that part out.

We had backpacked in and found a fine site on a sandy flat. Morning saw us heading for the warm spring first thing, then a hike in the canyon before returning to the cars. Afternoon took in the ghost town of Signal and then a short drive to find a campsite along Seventeen Mile Road to relax as the sun set on the day's fun.

We opted for a trip up toward Wikieup to complete the weekend. A visit to a rock formation, checking out the S end of Upper Burro Wilderness Area, and then meeting Marion and Dennis to check out a warm spring close to Burro Creek as well. We actually got everything done. Great day!

2011_11_20 A Reavis Ranch Trail Interception

Marion had coordinated an overnight trip for the Tucson Backpackers to Reavis Ranch. I thought it would be great fun to try and intercept them as they were returning to the Rogers Trough TH. Rogil liked the concept too and that's why we ended up camping Saturday night. We were up to a good looking morning, but clouds built up and then later thinned through the day. We did meet up with the group and had a great time hiking in, then out again. I got a dip in a pool along the way out too - chilly. We took a minor detour to share a burger stop at the River Bottom Grill in Florence before heading N and home. Another fun adventure.

2011_11_19 Battleship Mountain

We finally made one of Darrell Foster's hikes - the summit of Battleship Mountain in the Superstitions. With great anticipation we gathered in the morning: thirteen of us - Darrell, Rogil and I, another Dave, Ursala, two Steves, Julie, Bill, Marion, Adam, Mike and Dan. Starting from First Water TH we linked First Water, Second Water and part of Boulder Canyon Trails. From the West side of Battleship Mountain we ascended first to the saddle. The route then turns N and nominally follows the ridge line toward the summit. The upper portion was as advertized and contained some exposed areas, enough so that I stopped about 2/3 of the way to the summit (but will get back to). As I waited for everyone to return I was passed by a single hiker coming down and another party of about 8 going up. It was a fine day to be out. After the hike we went to Los Gringos Locos in Apache Junction. Thanks Darrell!

2011_11_13 Atlanta - B'day Weekend II

Sunday was our last day together for this gathering. We all got in a swim at the hotel pool and played at a park before Michael took Brock and Brittney back to Huntsville. Then some afternoon shopping for Ian and Hitomi to get the critical gifts for their return to Japan. Later in the day it was time to finish off the b'day cheesecake, and complete our time together too. What a great visit!

2011_11_12 Atlanta - B'day Weekend I

Friday evening's arrival in Atlanta was an exercise in where-the-hell-is-the-hotel - there are three Marriotts in the immediate vicinty of the airport and Rogil and I found the correct one only after stopping at the other two. Saturday was a busy day. Getting everyone coordinated was the usual effort. We all went to the aquarium in Atlanta (and no one got lost), had Ian's birthday dinner, and in the evening Hitomi presented us with some wonderful gifts.

2011_11_10 Ian and Hitomi Dinner

On Thursday Ian and Hitomi took some time to see some of the Phoenix area. Given the option, Ian and Hitomi chose 'something pork' for dinner. Menu - Multi-colored tomatoes and mozzarella with oil and balsamic vinegar, a loaf of Italian bredad, doubled, loin of pork roasted with steamed, tri-colored baby cauliflower and beans. Then, after a round of mini golf, we came back for a dessert of fresh fruit tarts.

2011_11_09 Las Vegas to Phoenix

Wednesday was an early start to get back to Phoenix from Las Vegas. Select stops were made - briefly at Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, and Sedona. Prime objective seemed to be arriving in Sedona for sunset and we made it by about and hour. Was fun along the way and we saw lots of mountains and desert. The finish with the setting sun's lighting up the formations in Sedona seemed fitting closure to the day's drive. Timing worked out such that we met Rogil at the Wildflower's Cafe in Phoenix for dinner befofre heading home.

2011_11_08 Red Rocks and Dinner

Tuesday was a day out in the Las Vegas area. I chose to visit the climbing mecca of Red Rocks. This is part of Red Rocks National Conservation Area and is a beautiful range just W of Las Vegas. Extraordinary collection of sandstone climbing here in both the sport and trad models of climbing. Rogil and I will be back. End of day was dinner with Ian and Hitomi. Fine day all around and a great finish!

On the way up to Las Vegas to meet Ian and Hitomi I took a brief stop at Hoover Dam. My pocket knife was considered such a risk to the dam that I could not get into the visitor's area to take the tour... So, I took a short walk across the top of the dam and hit the road again heading N.

2011_10_28 to 30 Cochise Stronghold

Rogil has often spoken about doing a climb in Cochise Stronghold called Moby Dick. When our friend John indicated he'd be willing to give it a go, we jumped at the opportunity. This route lies on a feature called Whale Dome - and you'll see why in the pics. About 650 feet of climbing in six pitches on fine, sticky granite. Weather was excellent and the climb went very smoothly. We ran into Geir and Marcy on the rock and their company further enhanced the weekend. Quite a thrill for me and a route worth repeating! Thanks Rogil and John. Great to meet up with you Geir and Marcy.

AMC Fall 2011 Outdoor Rock Climbing Class. Graduation climb at Sven Tower III in the McDowell Mountains. Leader - Rogil Schroeter, with the assistance of Dave Cameron, Nick Hoffman, and Keith Waldrup. 2011_10_01 and 02 WCC S Side Exploration and Streamside Camp

Our expected revisit to Indian Maiden Falls for this weekend was scrubbed so we had choices to make. Rogil had been wanting to check out some possible access locations at intermediate points on the S side of WCC. So, we printed up some maps, grabbed the GPS, packed for a backpack exercise (in hopes of reaching the creek) and headed out the door. It was great recreation checking out the options, but we were not successful in getting down to the creek (yet). Late in the afternoon, we decided to hike up WCC from the Bull Pen TH to at least enjoy the streamside ambiance for the evening. Morning saw us checking out a canyonside ruin before returning to camp for a multi-stage dip-task sequence before hiking out. A fine time!

2011_09_24 GC Boucher Trail

For this year's version of Rogil's Halfast Death March she chose to do the Boucher Trail. Entering via the Waldron Trail and connecting through sections of Hermit Trail and Dripping Springs Trail we did an in-and-out trek. Covering about 31 km (19 miles) with and elevation change of around 680 m (2200 ft) four of us took about 14 hours to reach the Whites Butte saddle and come back out, including a side trip to Dripping Spring. A couple of our more intrepid hikers made it to the river {1300m m (4300 ft), 39 km (24 miles), 17-1/4 hours }. We all had a LONG day and were glad to return to the cars and camp, but what a wonderful place!

2011_09_10 and 11 Long Lake and Blue Ridge Reservoir

We'd signed up for some climbing on Sunday at the Powerline Crag at Blue Ridge Reservoir. So, we opted to extend the fun by putting the canoe atop the Xterra and heading for Long Lake Saturday morning. A storm moved by while we were at Long Lake and we loaded up the canoe and headed for Blue Ridge Reservoir. Got in another paddle before heading to find a camp. Evening was good, but we ended up scurrying about to set a tarp about 21h30 as a nice light show accompanied by rain moved in and precipitated on us for at least 3 hours. Sunday morning was a leisurely start and then off to the crag for a good day's climbing. Another fine weekend, go figure.

Based on a couple preliminary day hikes in the West Clear Creek area it was time to extend the stay and explore this wondrous thread of water in the desert a bit further. We had a great couple days and even a sprinkle Sunday morning to help us enjoy the experience. What a place!

2011_08_27 Tracing West Clear Creek - Bullpen Up and Back

A day trip was in order. We had multiple choices available and ended up completing something I had wanted to do for quite some time. The trail out of the Bullpen took us to the far crossing when we simply turned around and headed downstream in the creek bed. Lot's of solitude, slippery rocks, beautiful runs and pools, a few threatening claps of thunder, clouds that showed up to shade us some from the afternoon sun, etc. A good day. Only 10 hours time on trail... Sure glad we got to enjoy this area!

2011_08_21 A Bradshaws Visit & Green Canyon Water

We decided to stay relatively close to home for our day's outing this weekend. The Bradshaw Mountains are a pretty close hop up I-17, through metropolitan Bumble Bee & Cleator, then up the hill... We did spend the night outside of Crown King - treated to some other group's rap serenade until sometime after 03h00. Oh well. Then off to check up the King Dome a climbing area just outside of Crown King and then an afternoon hike on the Algonquin Trail. Kind of laid back and enjoyable (other than the music).

2011_08_13 A Salt River Moonlight Cruise

Deke offered a moonlight cruise on the Salt River that was a fantastic opportunity to play on the water and exercise my canoe again. Despite some initial trepidation Michele and I decided to give it a go and we had a great time. The night sure presents some different challenges and really enhances the role of sound for paddling. Great fun with Cheryl, Katie, Paul, Lori, Deke (the kaykers) and our singular aluminium canoe... Michele - you did GREAT! A few of my pics and I've added others posted by Lori and Paul (credited accordingly).

2011_08_07 Return to Trail 17 - West Clear Creek

Years ago I'd done this trail and had wanted to come back and explore this beautiful location again. The road in to the TH was as rough as I remembered, but it takes a good distance off the hike, both ways! Weather was warm and sunny. Pretty hot on the way down and the WCC water was WONDERFUL. Not too many bugs either. We hiked upstream aways, enjoying numerous pools and reveled in the solitude. A big bonus treat coming out was finding a bighorn sheep eyeing us from a close ledge just above the stream. Hike out not bad either and it went quicker than we thought. A FABULOUS day!

2011_07_29 to 31 Monsoon Visits to Beaver and W Fork Canyons

After due deliberations we snapped up a suggestion from Marion and Dennis to try Wet Beaver Creek on the weekend and see what Sunday would bring for other fun. All went well with a bit of showers Saturday and we opted to give the W Fork of Oak Creek a go on Sunday - easy access and smooth hiking. Good time to share time and the weather... We all had fun!

2011_07_23 and 24 Rim Lakes Probe by Canoe

It came to be Friday again and we'd not selected a weekend destination. Cooler areas were, for the most part, showing 30% chance of rain Saturday and Sunday. After numerous considerations we decided to try some thing wet regardless and headed to the Mogollon rim to test-canoe some of the lakes up there. We hurriedly selected and packed gear after getting our shorter canoe up on top of the Xterra. Saturday morning we were off to see what the weekend would bring. Gee - another fun one!

2011_07_16 &17 Wet Beaver Canyon from Waldroup

Another weekend loomed. I had some house work I needed help with and we did that Saturday morning (thanks Rogil). Our destination was one we'd been to before, but it's always a different trip. So we headed out to access Wet Beaver Creek from the N side via Waldroup Canyon. Started Saturday after lunch to enjoy some roaming about, camp somewhere at about 6000' elevation, and then get an early start Sunday (there were scattered T-showers predicted for the area). It did not quite work out entirely as we expected, but it was a good time regardless.

2011_07_08 RI I - New Bedford Whaling Museum, etc

Off to Rhode Island to visit Andrea and family while Brock and Brittney were there. Got in LATE Thursday, but made it to the Whaling Museum on Friday. Interesting place and this area was one of the critical hubs in this industry. I was surprised to learn that vessels were still going out into the 1920's.

2011_07_03 Zimmerman Point

One of the other possibilities for our weekend was to 'stay high' (altitude) and hike in the cooler temps and we decided to do that Sunday. We selected a partly-on-trail hike out to Zimmerman Point which would keep us mostlly above 6500 feet. Starting from the Carr TH we took the Parker Creek trail initially, then split off and hiked essentially the ridgeline out to Zimmerman Point. It was another warm one, but we got out to the point and and enjoyed that bit of success. As was the case yesterday, we saw no one on the trail or off. Empty wilderness - go figure.

2011_07_02 A Devils Chasm Attempt

For our first day we chose to try and get to the bottom of things (in a sense) off the top via Devils Chasm. This is a canyon that drops to intersect Cherry Creek Road on the E side of the Sierra Anchas. We finished the day being SO close to where we wanted to end up, but it was HOT, there were storms brewing in the E and headed our way, and we were out of time... So, perhaps there is one more adventure left here.

2011_06_26 Probing the Base of Mt Eldon

We camped the night just W of Mountainaire. Quiet; peaceful; great temps evening, overnight, and in the morning. We enjoyed it to the fullest. Then headed N to Flag to check out the base of Mt Eldon. Rogil's had her eyes on a canyon that come down from the top and two exposed rocky ridges that are just begging to be scrambled to the top. So, off we went and spent a few hours hiking the lower elevations to check out these features.

2011_06_25 Kelly and James Canyons Loop

With time and promising weather we opted to do a loop hike through two canyons that feed Pumphouse Wash N of Sedona. Those two are: Kelly Canyon (non-technical hike) and James Canyon (which takes some technical gear). We drove up Saturday morning and parked at the confluence of Kelly and Pumphouse canyons. We proceeded up Kelly, across the top, and then down James and that proved to be a good approach for the day. Good fun!

2011_06_11 Christopher Creek

After the relatively dry canyons we did in UT it was time to visit a WET one in AZ. So, we gathered a few friends together to try Christopher Creek and had a grand time of it. New bolts make some areas MUCH easier, but it does change the rope length requirements a bit. We found that a 30 m rope would do it all for double rope raps, but a spare is highly desirable too. Sure was good to get wet again!

2011_06_05 Utah IX - Return to AZ

The nice thing about this vacation is that we got to sleep in until 06h00 everyday (unless we happened to get up earlier). Our last morning in Hanksville was no exception. Then a 'leisurely' breakfast at the restaurant before heading home. That journey was almost direct, with a small deviation to take the Comb Wash Road that mysteriously runs on the W side of Comb Ridge. It was a good choice and another opportunity to see more of the countryside. A stop in Mexican Hat on the San Juan River for lunch linked to a fine finish of the trip. THANKS EVERYONE!

2011_06_04 Utah VIII - Blarney Cyn & Henry Mountains

Saturday and once more into the ditch. The Irisher on today's agenda was Blarney Canyon. Another short 3A I / II, this would be the last shot for Bill and Phil to enjoy before they departed for PHX. It went well and we sent them on their way in style after a short snack. Tim & Kathy, Rogil and I then investigated the possibility (none) of getting an oil change in Hanksville before taking a tour up one of the road that goes into the Henry Mountains. Turned out to be a good idea and there were number of fun things to see. Then, back to Hanksville for showers, dinner, a stay at the campground, and breakfast before starting out to PHX the next day.

2011_06_03 Utah VII - Shillelagh Cyn and Alternate Hike

And for our next trick... we started back toward PHX and stopped at the “Irish Canyons”, a collection of 3 or 4 canyons S of Hanksville along UT Hwy 95. We're now down to half a dozen given the departure of our friends. Shillelagh is a short canyon being rated 3A I / II. We had a fine time of it and got back well before lunch. With the time remaining most folks wanted to do the Leprecahun Canyon (3A I / II PG SLOT), but again I chose to skip the skinny stuff and go for a hike instead. We all had a good day!

2011_06_02 Utah VI - Arscenic Cyn

Thursday's entertainment was another of the Poison Spring Canyon's treats. This time Arscenic or the West Fork of Poison Spring's South Fork. It's an adjacent canyon to Slidenide that we did earlier. The ACA rating for this canyon is 3A II - experience required, moderate difficulty, probably dry, and only a part of a day. It did work out that way! This was the last day for Dave and Kim as well as Mark, Troy, and Tom: they headed back toward PHX the following morning with a stop at Fry Canyon along the way.

2011_05_31 Utah IV - Horseshoe Cyn Pictographs

Day 4 of the trip. The bulk of the group wanted to do Upper Larry Canyon (3A III / IV PG SLOT), one I thought might have some parts that would be too narrow for my comfort range. So, I opted out and Dave McC joined me in a trip to the Horseshoe Canyon part of Canyonlands National Park. We still helped with the morning shuttle placement though for the group and showed up to assist at the end of the day too. All made it, but some confusion lead to a longer day in Larry Canyon than was desirable.

2011_05_30 Utah III - Blue John Cyn

Monday's challenge. The Main Fork of Blue John Canyon using the West Fork exit option. We would not do the narrows section of Aaron Ralston fame, but did visit that area while in the canyon. Rating for this canyon is 3A II PG SLOT. Based on timing for our efforts is looks like a trek all the way through the narrows and on to Horseshoe Canyon is a possibility for a long day trip (and long shuttle too).

First ditch, so to speak. Called Slidenide, this canyon is also named by Kelsey as 'Middle Fork of Poison Springs South Fork'. Canyon rating is 3A II unless you downclimb rather than rappel in one spot. Sooooo. Off we go. Let the escapade begin!

2011_05_28 Utah I - Travel Day to UT

OH BOY! The annual canyon-a-day UT trip is about to start. Rogil's cactus blossomed the day we left - auguring well for the excursion. We met everyone leaving from PHX at the Paradise Bakery, picked up some coffee (for those so inclined) and hit the road. Intent was to meet up with Dave and Kim just S of Hanksville along the Poison Spring Canyon Road to begin the canyoning fun! And we DID!

2011_05_20 to 22 Graduation Weekend - Malibu and LA

This weekend witnessed the culmination of a substantial amount of classwork, research and combined disseration acceptance - Andrea and Michael received their doctorates in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. Rogil and I went to help celebrate and (of course) baby sit Aviva during the ceremony. We also took the opportunity to visit several sites in the area and enjoy the time with them. CONGRATULATIONS!

2011_05_01 Salome -- VOAZ Support

The VOAZ (Volunteer Outdoors in Arizona) group built and maintains the trail from the canyon exit back to the road and is expanding their trail coverage (THANK YOU). Rogil has been taking a group from the trail crew through the canyon as a means of saying thanks for their efforts for about decade now. It's always fun to share this beautiful spot. Everybody had a great time too.

Part of my recovery from hernia surgery was to keep getting some exercise. Michele and I headed out to Cave Creek Park to do the Go John Trail while Rogil was checking out the Monk for grad climb beta. Great day and we made the just less than 6 mile loop in 2 hours - not bad for a sicky... Just a couple photos this time.

2011_02_07 A Red Butted Side Trek

We'd been looking at a book about hiking the geology of the Grand Canyon and discovered there was a trail going up another remarkable feature along the highway coming N. It is known as Red Butte. Not satisfied with just the 5500+ foot rinse in 10 miles on the Bright Angel Trail, we decided to try another 860+ feet up and back down the 1.2 mile trail (one way) to loosen up again during the afternoon. Good fun and spectacular views!

2011_02_05 to 07 Sallying Forth to the Grand Canyon

Sally's yearly excursion to the Big Ditch with two nights at Phantom Ranch took place this weekend. Some 21 people were involved (a lot of Minnesooootans). Rogil and I had a great time. Hiked in S Kaibab and out Bright Angel trails as usual. Sunday was spent up on Utah Flats and finding a trail on the N side of Cheops Temple. THANKS FOR THE INVITE AND ORGANIZATION SALLY!

After talking to Val about a visit to the Boulder City area we finally made it! Hot springs and other fun were on the schedule and we made the most of it. Great hiking and scrambling combined with fantastic scenery and the visit to Anniversary Narrows was SUPER too!
