Teaching and Learning in Costa Rica

My fifth graders traveled annually to Costa Rica as part of our International Baccalaureate Programme and unit of inquiry entitled "Earth In The Balance." The organizing theme is "Sharing the Planet" and the discipline foci are science and social studies. The central idea of the unit is that all elements in an ecosystem are interdependent and that maintaining balance is vital. Students inquire about the elements and nature of an ecosystem, the interactions of the elements, how human beings and other organisms adapt to their environments and our role in maintaining ecological balance. At Ecolodge San Luis, students observe complex ecosystems, develop hypotheses, collect data and analyze results. They express through poetry and creative writing their appreciation for the wonder and mystery of the rain forest. Students use non-fiction writing frames to record and expand on the data collected in the field and illustrate both the importance and frailty of the rain forest ecosystem.

Rebuilding New Orleans with Mennonite Disaster Service

As a volunteer for Mennonite Disaster Service in New Orleans, I helped rebuild houses destroyed by Katrina. Working with other volunteers and people who had lost their homes and communities was incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

Coeus International School Camping at Abrams Creek

We experienced the beauty and tranquility of Abrams Creek, the pleasures and challenges of creating a new and diverse community, and the joy and discomfort of camping in the wild for the culmination our first orientation in 2006. Near DC - but worlds away - Abrams Creek enveloped us in idyllic forests, pristine streams, the soothing sounds of water rippling over rocks, warm sun rays streaming through trees and the quietness of the moonlit night. We worked, played and learned while building our school community, serving the local community, exploring nature, and discovering new spaces and better understandings of each other and us.

Professional Development in El Salvador

Colleagues and I attended a professional development conference in El Salvador. Provided by the Council of International Schools in the Americas, the conference was on Language Acquisition and Development in a Bilingual Context. The conference explored the challenges facing second language learners in areas such as acquiring/learning/teaching the language of instruction in another first language environment, maintaining and developing pupils’ first language, building effective first language programs in schools, building cohesion between language departments within and between schools, ESL support in schools and the best ways forward.
