Spanish_Dia de los Muertos
Mrs. Pickeral's Spanish students have been studying La Dia de los Muertos, observed November 1 and 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead). The students decorated the classroom with traditional decorations, and made ofrenda boxes and paper marigolds. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull (colloquially called calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas (colloquial term for "skeleton"), and foods such as sugar or chocolate skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead. Our students are making calacas tomorrow, Nov 2.
