The view from my window at the Best Western in Eureka, CA
It was actually quite nice, tho' the hot tub in the room was better than the view for helping me chill from a long days' drive.
Humboldt State Park, home of the largest herd of Roosevelt Elk in the US. Which I did not see in the park.
Imagine elk here. That's what I'm doing.
Elk could drink here. There was a pretty little heron I couldn't capture in a photo, too. Nice area!
And berries. Lots of berries.
I did not eat a single one, fearing a park ranger would magically appear from behind a bush and chastise me. That, and I was more taken up with the photography than the sweets. Foolish mortal.
Queen Anne's Lace.
It's really one of my favorite flowers.
This was hiding in the brush. I don't know what it is, but it's bright and pretty and happy-making
A purely "I was here, and here's my car to prove it!" shot
A-HA! There ARE elk! As I left the official elk viewing area in Humboldt, they were in the next area down behind an abandoned house.
Mostly, they're just chillin'.
My first view of the coastline on this leg of the trip.
This was taken in Oregon, near the Rogue River part of the coast
Same place, Oregon, rogue river, and a view of the highway I'm about to get back on.
I took this just to get the perspective shot - see the little tiny people? Big rocks. Very big rocks.
One of my final stops prior to Newport was the Sea Lion Caves. Walking down the causeway I heard a little water fall and had to take the picture. I could have done better with the aperture on this one.
self-explanatory
It's such a big ocean.
And it's Right Down There. I'll get to the sea lion cave shortly.
The Sea Lion Cave is the largest natural sea cave in the US, or so the brochure says. At other times of day, there will be a bunch of sea lions in here. There is a fence to make sure you don't go kill yourself in there - that's the shading you see in the photo.
The sea lions were being sensible and hanging out in the sun, rather than in a very loud, very wet cave.
Pan back just so I can remember how cool the whole view was.
With splooshes.
OK, so I had fun taking photos of sea lions and couldn't pick just one to post.
Better shot of the Heceta light house overseeing the area.
