Bahay sa Daet

"House in Daet". Part II of our Asian trip, although in reality our primary destination. Tokyo was a side-trip, winning out over Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Seoul. Anyway, back to the Philippines. Dulce's mother's family is from Daet, and I've been once before in 2004. Everything was happily familiar, except there were two small differences from the last trip...

"The family in Daet". The raison d'être for coming here: Mama and Papu want to show off the grandkids. In 2004, haole me was the center of attention. This time, I was all but ignored, just the guy with the cameras.

Daet, the Town

Pronounced like it sounds "Dah-ett". The large town of 94,000 is the capital of Camarines Norte in the Bicol Region of Luzon. Busy, crowded, chaotic, definitely off the beaten path for most visitors to the Philippines.

Daet, Eating & Shopping

A study in contrasts. A cavernous public market selling butchered fish & meat, plus fresh veggies. And an air-conditioned shopping mall, not too unlike a small-town USA mall. There were quite a few restaurants, but we'd rather eat the seafood all the aunties perpared at home.

Bagasbas & Mercedes, the seaside

The Pacific Ocean, viewed from the other side. Well, in relation to the US mainland. Bagasbas is a popular surfing spot with large waves. Mercedes is a fishing village, like Menemsha (the similarities pretty much end there). Too bad it was overcast, but that didn't stop them from enjoying it, especially Anya.

Anya at School

Perhaps our last non-holiday vacation, we felt a little bad taking Anya out of school, even though it's only Kindergarten. We strove to make the trip educational, and Anya's teacher had her write a daily journal. But Auntie Luz one-upped us both: have Anya go to her class! It was a unique and wonderful experience for her, plus she made some new friends.

Driving around Bicol & Naga

We took a number of long rides which gave us a chance to look at the scenery around Bicol. There are two principal ways to get around: the tricycle and the jeepney. This section captures a lot of the front-seat views, as we went between the towns, including 2 hours to Naga's airport.

Manila, the Big City

At 11,000,000 people, Metro Manila is the 11th largest city in the world (Tokyo is #1). A rather significant contrast to Tokyo, in cleanliness and standard of living, it's a bustling and lively city.

Historic Intramuros

It wasn't all shopping malls and city life, I wanted to explore the historic core. Intramuros, "Inside the Walls", gives us a glimpse of old Spanish Manila. Like Tokyo, most of these historical structures were rebuilt after the devastation of World War II.

Museo Pambata

The Children's Museum was located in central Manila, near Rizal Park. We wanted to give the little ones more chances to interact with a foreign Philippine culture. Even Papu was surprised by how much cool stuff this museum had.

Makati Skyscrapers & Hotel

Makati (Mah-KAH-tee) is the financial district of Metro Manila. Filled with skyscrapers and modern shopping malls, our hotel was based here. A rather clean and orderly place, compared to central Manila. I think the skyline is more impressive than Tokyo's and most US cities.

SM Mall of Asia

Here it is, the big mall. One of the four largest malls in the world, 40% more retail space than Mall of America. 750 stores, 220 restaurants, it's quite the tourist attraction on the bay. While much Xmas shopping was done, there were plenty of fun stuff to keep the little ones occupied.

Eating & Shopping in Manila

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the number of enormous malls in Manila. Granted, it's a very large city (#11 in the world), but there's just so many scattered around a relatively small area, sometimes adjacent to each other. Yet, they are always packed with people.

Two Haole-pinos

Here's an extra section of the two kids embracing the culture of a new foreign country. All Anya & Grant, All the time! We call this the "Grandma section" for Grandma and Mama to see the two kids in action. Like they care about what I see and do. For the uninitiated, Haole is (basically) "white person" in Hawaiian, and I added "pino" to make it sound like Jalapeño. Isn't that just the epitome of wit?

Ladies Night Out in Manila, March 2012

The Belen ladies needed some bonding time so we spent it in Manila, Philippines from March 4-12, 2012. We celebrated February birthdays by splurging on food, shopping, naps and great company. We searched for the best bibingka and halo-halo. It was an eventful, stress-free getaway.

Corregidor & Palawan (Mama & Papa; May 2012)

Dulce's parents go to the Philippines quite often. This time, they took very interesting excursions to Palawan and Corregidor, so I included the pictures here. We had planned to tour Corregidor, a World War II island fortress, back in November 2010. However, the flight from Naga to Manila was cancelled due to "sunset condition", destroying our plans to see the island.
