Caroling was a significant part of the Christmas celebrations in the early days of the Lennard-Shell Valley community. On the Julian Christmas Eve (January 6), groups of young children and adolescents would go from home to home singing carols, usually at a window of the main room. Some of the carolers would use a prop such as this star shaped lantern, with an icon illuminated from the inside by a candle. This prop was commonly called a "Star" and the carolers carrying it would usually be invited inside to better display it to the people in the household. Here two young boys, Lawrence Guraluik and John Penticuic pose for a picture with the "Star" in preparation for the coming Christmas Eve. The picture was probably taken around 1937-38 in front of Gregory Guraluik's pioneer home in the Shell Valley community.
