here's the backyard. on a nice day i sit in the back and read and eat. my bachelor flat is the tiny unit closest in the picture. it's very very small.
here's the inside of my place. modern decor no?
the view from the kitchen. that's the shower off in the distance. i would put a dime in the picture to show scale but it wouldn't fit.
this is my place from inside the shower. this picture gives you a sense of the entire length and width of the place. that carpet/rug needs to go
my cooking amenities. pasta and rice... bread and cheese. wine and beer. takeout and dine in.
geckos like to come in through that vent.
i call this the bathroom hallway.
that's the shower. by the way, every window in this country has burglar bars over it. if you don't have them over the windows, you have to have to have gates inside the house to partition the house. you're basically allowing access to the television but not the bedroom where you keep the important stuff (your life).
“germ PROTECTING” ?!
in the backyard are a couple trees. apart from the ibis, there are plenty of other animals that wander around here despite the neighborhood being mostly rural. in this picture there's a lizard that is about 10-12 inches long with a bright blue head.
here's what a “normal” thunderstorm looks like. of course this barely captures the rain, the wind and the noise.
the family i'm staying with have a kid who's like 8 or something. he entered a children's cricket tournament and i asked if i could come along. richard, the father, thought i was crazy for wanting to go. turns out he was right. this picture is a cereal mascot (i think) holding up richard and priscilla's newborn baby girl.
there were about 30 teams of 8 or 9 kids each. the chaos began when they tried to get the kids organized by teams. team names included, “savages”, “jelly tots”, “dolphins”, and “dolphinettes”
beautiful maritzburg summer weather. this is the KwaZuluNatal University cricket pitch. they fit 8 games of childrens cricket at a time on one pitch.
if you're familiar with the rules of cricket... it's kind of like baseball, except you don't have to run when you hit it. and when you do run, you have a teammate standing opposite you who runs to your wicket while you run to his. if you're close to being thrown out you can dive headfirst across the line. what you're seeing above is angello's partner not diving (the ball is being chased by the other team still). it's a good action shot that sums up the cricket played by the kids.
i don't think this picture really needs a caption
this is around hour 2 of our road trip to carry out a site inspection. bruce pulled over at the mkomazi bridge for two reasons: one is that it was a single lane bridge (more like a 0.75 lane bridge) that was widened by bcp years ago. it's also in a flood plain that once several decades ago flooded to such an extent that structures hundreds of meters from the river had water over their roofs. the second was “to take the pressure off”.
that's bruce. in the lower right of the shot is some bloke sitting by a fire fishing for his supper.
this picture captures a typical south african township landscape. there's no major/white city around for a hundred km. you'll also notice that this road, which winds around to the right lower down, doesn't have any paved roads branching off. all the houses below, which are the size of an american garage, have no garages and no car access. if anyone needs to get somewhere they can wait on the side of the road for a 'taxi' which is a ten or so seater vanagan-type vehicle which you rarely see without 16 to 25 passengers. or you can walk like the two in the picture are doing.
here's another good example of the landscape you see between cities. corrugated metal roofing oftentimes held down with bricks. electricity but no plumbing. some of the houses have gardens growing maize but despite what you'd expect, it's a very small percentage that try to grow food. the entrepeunerial spirit is rare in the townships. credit the welfare programs?
all that soil washed away one night. luckily police were driving by right as the road started turning to jelly and they stopped traffic so nobody died.
this is one of the things that keeps blowing my mind: the crazy part about construction in africa is that you're building stuff through african terrain. huge bamboo chutes everywhere. and just meters away are jungle and vines where tarzan could wrestle a crocodile in a few minutes.
that's bruce and james. bruce and i have been reviewing james' company (v&v) design of this culvert. the original (built years ago before they had to be designed by engineers) washed out some months back. the d.o.t. saw a few flags go up when reviewing the drawings of the new design and called bruce. sure enough we've found quite a few problems. james wasn't in charge of the design that we're scrutinizing (he's just the site supervisor in charge of wearing short shorts), but the head engineer is clearly embarassed that his design is so ass-backwards and layed out for all to see now.
job site: one side = sugar cane fields. other side = sleepy hollow.
on the way back, bruce stopped at a beach that i think is in 'scottsburgh'. rain and strong winds can keep people out of the water. after all it's still warm out when it's raining. there's a big set of waterslides (barely pictured to the right). 10 days ago, mid march, the stars and planets all aligned in a 1:1000 formation creating insane tidal forces that wiped out a large amount of the coast and the waves are still behaving oddly because of it.
white families frolick.
so i decided to record a little south african television (it's pure coincidence that the huge muscular tattooed bloke is named “jonah”). the previous scene had a man dressed as a woman talking about how she likes to buy stuff on ebay. it basically was lampooning american consumerism. as she walked off she sang the american national anthem.
after soccer today, virgilio and cracked open some beers and watched the maritzburg united team practice at the university. maritzburg united is the local professional team. problem is that they rarely win. everybody seems to prefer a few teams (the kaiser chiefs and the bloemfontain celtics) regardless of where they're from. this isn't spring training. this is how these professional teams practice. we were kicking around on the field right above where the pros practice. no shortage of available pitches around here.
the butterfly affection
this is the veranda of the lodge at the nottingham brewery. the only “microbrewery” i've found so far. who wouldn't want to spend a night at this lodge and just realx on the lake? the pub even showed the chelsea match (once the kzn sharks finished playing their rugby match) (and until the s.a. cricket match came on).
that cow in the background is hunting a bird. we are lost and getting rained on. just an hour ago it was blue skies.
this is the 'groundcover leather company' run by tristan's friends. i figured i'd stop by. on the way there along a slippery dirt road i passed a big truck stuck headfirst in a ditch. i wasn't about to stop. about 100 meters later there was a cow just wandering around. the prices would blow your mind here as well as the level of quality. i
when i went to pick up my work visa documents, i waited in a queue for some time, dropped off my passport and they said, come back in about an hour. i was damned if i was gonna stay in that refugee camp for an hour so i went looking for the botanical garden i found when i was lost the previous day. i had my camera on me too. anyhoo, the overcast weather fucked with the lighting but this tree looks like something out of a gaugin painting.
this place is a must see for anyone that ever visits s.a.
unlike the orchid house in kew gardens in london, the orchid house here (though smaller) is mostly open to the weather. south africa has orchids that just grow here in the wild. i think s.a. has the largest variety of naturally occuring orchids in the world.
those oversaturated purple orchids were photographed at kew gardens. they're so colorful they mess the exposure of the camera up if you're not careful. this place made me think of my favorite old time radio show “nero wolfe” (starring sydney greenstreet). the chairborne detective, wolfe, spends all his money on orchids and beer. what a life.
any thoughts?
i keep referring to s.a. being in the mezazoic era. this tree just looks prehistoric to me. look how those huge limbs come off there. they just keep heading straight out. there's no sense of scale in this one but look at the next pic and then look at this one again.
more ibis aerating the soil. i took this picture for the tree with the insane “roots” in the distance. the tree's diameter increases a little.
for anyone that's read tolkien, this thing is an ent. have you seen the entwives?
i've never heard of anything like this before. imagine finding a plant you've never seen so you bring it home for your public garden. when you die years later, nobody has found another one. if you're spiritual, you've gotta think the grove was unique. if you're a scientist, it's gotta blow your mind to think of such a mutation occuring...
sorry to keep piling on the philosophy but this plant in the foreground just sums a large population of south africa. while a lot of the flowers here are colorful to attract, bats, snails, moths etc to fertilize them or aromatic or bear fruit to get eaten and spread their seeds, this plant just says to hell with the whole symbiosis thing and looks after itself. people here tend to not have enough to survive so giving back to society is laughable. imagine a society with 90%+ of the population like that.
i saw this bird flying accross a field and followed it. it had a cute crown and one of those huge tails that drag behind it for a length twice its body size. so cute!
candice, the front desk secretary, who happens to be very very pretty, refused to be pictured. she's ducked down behind the desk in this picture.
only problem is when the phone rings, candice has to spring into action and gets caught on film.
this is the roads section. top floor - front building.
Taking a step backwards, bridgit (the secretary for the bridges dept) is going over a document with bruce (almighty).
taking a 90 degree turn to the right. the “courtyard”.
another 90 degree turn to the right is the bridges/structures dept. my office is the one straight ahead.
right before bridgit took this picture virgilio says, ”directors meeting!“ man, that guy cracks me up. i can't look at this picture without laughing.
this is the office for virgilio (far) “junior engineer”, ezilet (near) a technician and rhona a technician. big room, shared. virgilio leaves soon for richard's bay so it'll be even bigger and emptier.
nontu is the secretary for the roads and planning department downstairs
RAMDASS
as promised...
CHAKALAKAlakalakalaka...
looking down on maritzburg from some little nature reserve.
i was trying to take a picture of the ground when this flower jumped into my frame and ruined the shot.
this is also looking down on maritzburg but one of the black areas. karyn's father and mother graham and pat are in the foreground. i'm taking the picture from atop a rise where maritzburg keeps its water. a six story hole in the ground.
we walked right up to a stamped of these grasshopers. big brutes these things.
wildebeast and zebra
not all acacia try to beat you over the head with the fractal or fibonaci stuff like this one does. i'm not sure if it's the math guy in me that made this one grab me.
it was a little blustery and the wind blowing through the waist deep grass was truly beautiful.
passing through grass
a “herd“ of monkeys. a “school” of monkeys? a “gaggle” of monkeys? a ”quarum“ of monkeys? a ”minion“ of monkeys!
my art shot of the day. this piece of grass had broken off and hooked on some other piece of grass in the lower left. as the wind blew, the piece of grass would swivel back and forth and slowly cut a groove in the hard packed earth. look in the upper right to see how hard the earth is here... compare it to the frailty of the grass and the fact that it's in middle of the path... graham, at first, was naturally skeptical that the groove could have been cut by grass blowing back and forth in the wind but after a couple bursts of wind we both agreed on the source of the tale.
karyn's mother is very accomplished photographer (and very modest about it). her wall of photos will make your jaw drop. karyn and her twin sister are in a picture in the lower right. a couple of the pictures pictured here have won awards or been bought for collections.
Angelo and I were dressed like twins today. partially by coincidence but mostly because that's still the only pair of shorts i have, i brought two of those red shirts and i have to save my socks for work. odds are, if it's a sunny day, i'm gonna be wearing this get up. by the way, that's “pug” my new little means of mobility.
richard and priscilla invited me to join their family on an outing to a picnic restaurant in the midlands. it's basically a family's house with a beautiful backyard where you come and they have a 5 course meal waiting for you.
the establishment provides blankets, a little table, and wait staff (black of course). this is the view you enjoy while you relax and eat and drink.
this is my first posed picture of liza. you don't have to tell me she's a real looker but she's very kind too. can make a 40 minute drive out to the midlands just pass by.
this is the landlord richard. he can be a very serious guy most of the time but when you put his youngest daughter in his arms he's a totally different guy.
while richard can fluctuate between serious and joking, his wife maintains a more temperate, steady level.
this is the 8 year old angelo. he won't eat fruit or vegetables. he's always desperately trying to get me to play catch with him wherever we are.
while we were playing scrabble, the owners' daughter, ella, showed up. she had the requisite english accent and was SO adorable. she initially came over to see the baby but eventually she forgot about that and helped me with scrabble, posed for pictures and, of course, rode around on my back.
now here's something unexpected. the second, and i mean the second, you put a pair of sunglesses on ella, she strikes a thug rapper position. i'm not kidding, this is no random shot. and i can prove it.
every time put the camera up she would strike a different pose. too much fun.
and then ELLA started taking the pictures. i'd have to say that she is the first photographer that's professional enough to really make me feel this comfortable in front of a camera
on the way back we stopped at swissland cheese goat farm to see if i could get some more of there pepper jelly. no dice but i figured we could take some pictures becasue the place is very cute. i'm surprised liza wasn't strangling me in this picture. i got us very lost on a narrow dirt road in the middle of nowhere when i missed the turn for this place. let's just say, this isn't where you want to get lost or stuck.
if you don't mind the smell of goats, this is a great picnic area.
it's unfortunate my camera freaks when there's a bright sun in the sky. this should have been a great picture.
just farmland and townships for miles.
liza found this humongous caterpillar up in a maple tree.
so, today i went to durban with derek, his son and ian to watch the kzn rugby team, the sharks, play in the semifinals of a regional tournament (australia, new zealand, south africa). in the foreground are derek and ian (left to right). in the background on the right is the rugby stadium. the six cranes working away (on this saturday) are hard at work building the new soccer stadium for guess what sporting event taking place in 2010.
no concrete poured yet... lotsa steel being laid out though.
all around the rugby stadium are rugby pitches. on the day of matches, these serve as parking lots. people show up early in the morning and just braai all day and night just get pissed all day long. bcp has a space reserved below where this picture is taken. a vehicle stocked with beer was there. that was nice.
this is the rugby stadium. beautiful weather as always. but check out the slope of the seating. vertigo inducing. you can be high up but not far off from the field. your vertical distance from the players is greater than your horizontal distance and make no mistake, the vertical distance is significant.
the tee for holding the ball on a kick is brought out (i'm not kidding) by a remote controlled truck (shown in the picture)
the place goes nuts as the sharks score the go ahead points. they would go on to win.
after the sharks score, they have a couple blokes that have to do a push up for every point they have. you can see them in the far posts. the sharks also have about 15 women who walk to all four sides of the stadium wearing black trenchcoats (and white bikinis underneath) and then flash that side of the stadium. lastly, the cheerleaders here wear less than they do in the states.
when the game ends, everyone is allowed on the field. to just mill about. the other semifinal match was broadcast on the big screen so you could go down, sit on the pitch and watch the next game. also, notice the weird shaped 'vodacom' ads. they show up as squares on tv taking perspective into account. i hate them on tv but don't mind them in person.
also, after the game, people just throw everything at their disposal onto the field. i saw quite a few fans on the field get hit by cardboard drink holders flying around like ninja stars.
didn't i tell you it was vertigo inducing?
durban
this picture was taken at the mugg & bean in durban at the suncoast casino before we went to see “chalo cinema 3: the road to fame”. songs have been written about eyes like that.
this was taken during the morning rush, trying to get ready for work in the morning. it's quickly getting darker later so no more sun pouring in through the windows to wake us up.
joeji's got cooking in her blood and she can do curry like nobody's business. i get hungry just looking at these pictures. here she is about to cook a three course curry meal wearing a white shirt. she's so brave. by the way, in the background are two hansa beers, the pilsener and the marzen. compare and contrast. also in the background is joelene's mother's house.
this last saturday joelene took me to a coworker's feast in celebration of a recent promotion and the health of his children. on his property he's building a bed and breakfast type place. you can kind of see the construction principles used here. i think it's quite clear that joelene is built far better than the houses. notice the arched bridge in the background.
nearby a shepherd was moving his flock.
ever heard of a car company called “tata”? very common here. i told joelene what a tata is in the states. in the back is a “taxi” or “koombi”. that's basically mass transit right there.
after speeches and dinner came gifts. mandla gave his sons and daughters blankets and suitcases to represent warmth, home and safe travels. they had to dance or sing for the gifts. they also had to lie down and be covered in the blankets.
afterwards everybody sang.
joelene's church.
after the feast we stopped in at joelene's brother's place. friends of the family were working on the vw squareback's engine. they were nice enough to let me take a picture.
inside, joelene's niece nikita and cousins were more than happy for me to take their picture.
oh and they have a cat! the cat wasn't into being petted... or photographed.
joelene here is trying to pick a good bollywood film from their movie collection. that's nikita's brother a.j. the other night when the family came over for dinner to celebrate joelene's mother coming back from hospital after hip replacement, nikita and a.j. put on joelene's belly dancing bells and whistles and danced for us. very cute. it turned into a dance off. people were served.
the future of south africa.
today i went out to the mgeni viaduct job site. it's the biggest project i'm currently working on. column heights of 45 meters and a total span of about a half a kilometer. up the road is a staging area where workers can be trained. this picture is from bcp's staging area in newlands east.
they've already started working on pedestrian bridges to cross the road that hasn't been built leading up to the bridge that we're still hammering out the construction process for.
there's a lot of earthwork excavation to be done still. some of the stone and earth (some having been dynamited out, and some pneumatically drilled) was dumped at a nearby school and danced at various areas to be used later.
here's another dumping area.
this is a window blasted through a mountainside where the road and bridge shall go. the wide brown dirt road off in the distance is the road from the other side that the bridge will meet up with.
the cliff slopes are unstable and there were people loosening all the loose rocks so that drilling equipment can go up there, drill a hole and then blow the area apart with dynamite.
those holes there are where the pier column footings are going to go.
that's the mgeni river i guess. all sorts of shit obstructing its flow. notice the sunlight just peaking over the mountain. gorgeous eh?
you can see the rocks they're loosening. two young women and one man.
those holes are for the pier columns footings. notice the acacia trees everywhere. also the clusters of small brick houses. t.i.a.
engineers down below. residents of the neighboring village up above
saturday we decided to try to semi-reenact our first date of ice skating in durban. this time i drove.
years ago i stole the uc davis “chemistry building” sign for my dad, a chemistry teacher. on the way to the beach i saw the sign “pteek chemist”. it's close to “mr. ptak, chemistry teacher”. that's a parking attendant, more than happy to get in the picture with joelene.
first thing we did was go to “mini-town”. their slogan should be “small buildings, little to do”. if elected i'll be an idiot. i just noticed that whoever painted that left hand, really fucked up.
what is mini-town? this is mini-town.
the cat lubbed the flub.
complete with giant-sized cat.
that airplane in the background actually taxis around.
and real trains to pretend to destroy.
there was a little cricket match going on in the stadium there. who says south africa isn't ready to host in 2010?
here's joeji at city hall
i stopped in for a little drink at the liquor store. too much amarula...
skate park
waves of durban. not surfable today. besides, the shark nets aren't up. this wharf leads out to a place where you can fish.
these two men make their living from making sand sculptures. you'll see a lot of different (but rarely unique) means of eeking out an existence in the tourist areas. a family of contortionists was here last time. hawkers are common.
the pizza here is so damn good for what you're paying.
joelene loves dogs so we stopped to look at these two pugs. and that was before we saw the puppy.
THE PUPPY!!!
i would name the puppy “splat”. joelene like the pup because it reminded her of her number one dog brutus who, in addition to sleepwalking, has an enormous head.
then we went ice skating. it's an old concrete building that you might call run down but it's in pretty good shape. by the way, joelene had straight hair when this day started.
action pose!
joeji just landed a triple-lutz here.
sunday morning we had breakfast by the falls. in this picture there is a white guy climbing the cliff while the blacks are doing their laundry in it. all the water below is green from the detergent they use. shame. joelene and i immediately concluded that when blacks see natural beauty, they destroy it and when whites see it, they have to conquer it.
see this dress? i got in deep trouble cuz of it. i got all conservative because we went to a cafe where i felt uncomfortable because i was with the only you-know-what girl and her knockers were so prominent. when i asked her to pull it up a bit... she left. aren't i smooth. maybe because she looked like a million bucks and i looked homeless (jeans and black t-shirt). the contrast makes me think people are looking and speculating. i don't mind the looking but i don't like the speculating.
i guess the most interesting part of this road isn't the scenery (it's reminiscent of anywhere in the states) but how the grass grows knee high right up to the road. it's like those roads you see in car commercials. i wouldn't be surprised if i'd seen it on tv before (shot when the grass is green).
that's 'pug'. he and i tried to drive to the snow on saturday. it's frustrating to see the snow (can you see a bit there in the distance) but not be able to get to it. three months ago the weather was scorching everyone and now there's snow 40 minutes away in the drakensberg. hold on, lemme show you a picture that really conveys the snow better.
doesn't my car look like it was meant to hang out with cows?
i thought i took a better picture than this but over on the right is the drakensberg with the snow that remains from almost a week ago. i couldn't come out earlier cuz of work.
eventually i hit some pretty serious (private) dirt roads and had to turn around. snow: 1, me: 0.
at the end of the dirt road i hit “fort nottingham”. it's now a museum. it was a fort set up by the british some time ago to protect the cattle and horses from being stolen by the locals on the other side of the drakensburg (ako lesotho). it was a sad memorial because the whites pushing into the mountains created conflict... a scarcity of food and eventually the british began hunting the natives. approximately one native remains today.
afterwards i stopped in at gunther's. it's a restaurant that serves german food. it's run by a german named gunther and his wife. basically just sausage and potatoes. but the view makes it great.
gunther's. i've been here three times. each time by myself.
so this was my dinner scene. that's my new phone. most sophisticated thing i own and i can't figure it out. the beer didn't help too much.
that's gunther and one of the dogs that lumbers around the place. gives the place an air of authenticity. that beast of a dog is giving the evil eye to some antelope-like animal on the other side of the fence. gunther is trying to explain to the dog that nobody is afraid of him 'cause he's so slow.
jenny and i arrived a scant 2.5 hours late and starving and luckily elisio was in the middle of cooking a nice meal for us when we arrived. i offered up the woman i brought to help.
jenny had already eaten so i was gonna eat her leftovers. she left none. jenny is an american doing research for her ph.d in johannesburg and was in durban that night before flying out to cape town. she usually travels with a bodyguard and driver provided by the university. friday night i was both her driver and bodyguard. THE TRANSPORTER!
dessert at a sidewalk cafe in a country with a ridiculous crime problem. not many of these left. recent crime stats were published. murders are up in 2006-2007 but _attempted_ murders are down over the same period. please feel free to draw your own conclusions.
this is the view from elisio's place.
pug goes to the races. the parking for the july (horse and fashion) show is on the golf course. grass is resilient here eh?
lots of people arrive to the july show via helicopter. there was a constant stream of them coming and going for about 2 hours.
that's joelene's coworker fortunate. you'll see that there're a pair of binoculors on the table. they were a gift to us from 'old mutual' for supposedly being connected to them somehow.
that's what i'd use them for too.
factoid: the movie 'racing stripes' about a girl who races her zebra was filmed not here but at the race course in pietermartizburg.
this guy works for some high-tech company. his horse didn't win.
v.i.p.s
this is the deck that they lay out between races for people to cross from one side to the next. so it's where the drunk men flood the track for the 13th race. for more information about the 13th race, please read about it in the blog entry “hang 10 like a horse”
something funny about a list of jockeys with one of them being “scratched” bottom in red.
zoom!
this picture fails to capture it but these two have matching black and orange outfits. i think hand made from scratch. also matching orange shoes. i swear it's like a mix between prom and halloween.
this is just a warm up lap for the horse. i guess at horse races people shout encouragement to their horse as it runs by. others study their run and then run to place their bets.
ok, here are the pictures of the 14th race that the woman sent to me. this is right at the beginning when people are still getting their bearings. that's me in the red chonies in the back trying to see if we're all about to get arrested. turns out taht guy was in charge of setting up the start line. those red bunders wouldn't manage to stay on me for long.
there i am on the right side just moments before the race started. i thought we were supposed to carry the chonies with us so that we didn't have to walk back all slow and naked. that was my motivation for running as fast as i could, don't let the cameras or eyesight focus on my "wobbly bits" as i've heard them called.
this picture features the following: 1.) my undies, 2.) a woman doing what any straight man would do if the tables were turned: try to blend in, 3.) a man too drunk to part with his beer during the course of the race. 4.) a fully dressed man sprinting alongside the participants... i don't think he's a doctor because if he were, he should be wearing rubber gloves. shit, he should be wearing rubber gloves regardless if he's gonna get that close to these blokes.
so afterward i had to dig through a pile of clothes to find the undies. i was lucky i didn't have friends like some of these guys who took off with their friends clothes. oh and if, for some ungodly reason, you're disappointed to not find any legitimate nude pics of me, call gavin, paul or some of my exes. also, notice the insane amount of people on the track just watching. and the people with cameras... gay porn site here we come.
sunday, this is where elizio and i ate lunch and watched the kids surf. it's winter here but wetsuits aren't mandatory.
at first we couldn't get in so we tried to watch from this knoll. but it was by the toilets or someplace that people considered toilets
FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! 2010 in africa is gonna be awesome!!!
one thing that south africa definitely understands better than germany is cheerleaders. not only does south africa, in my opinion, have infinitely better looking women than germany but they're properly instructed to shake dat ass!
if these aren't good seats i don't know what is. see that big guy on the left? he was like the shaquille o'neal of soccer. he stood in one place and waited to be fed the ball.
the nigerian fans celebrate.
a little something about surfing and frolicking in durban. they place two flags about 20 meters apart and that's where you can go in the water. rip tides, sharks, and a population of people that can't really swim make lifeguarding a serious job. so when people play in the water, they play in clusters like this. it's funny. in the distance you can see a short boarder wrapping up his ride and beyond that, a cargo ship waits to unload its goods. the kid in the red trunks on the right is using a broken surfboard piece as a boogie board. t.i.a.
this picture cracks my shit up. these blokes to get on sabc1 tv put a little african kid in the blue blanket and launched the kid WAY THE FUCK UP THERE. what's really wrong is how the kid looked up in the air. he'd obviously never done this before and had NO FUCKING IDEA how high we was going. i've seen it before and i was shocked enough to have the kid fly way out of my camera view. i can just imagine that they approached some kid wandering around on his own and said, “wanna be on tv?“.
now that i have a cellphone on my camera i can take pictures a lot easier. this is durban central. about three blocks down, the shit hits the fan. not a fun place to drive through. there are traffic lights (“robots” here) only for pedestrians which means a huge fucking flood of people who cross and continue to cross even ater the no longer have a green. i realized that the reason that all cars here are manual transmission is so you can drop the clutch and rev the hell out of your engine to scatter pedestrians.
i'm not a photojournalist in iraq but you have to admire my bravery to capture this bit of multimedia. driving to hillcrest i noticed that the reflectors on this road (the m13) weren't just reflectors but each one had a little LED in it. driving with your headlights was like playing flight simulator for the apple ][+... and i'm sure EVERYONE knows what i'm talking about. you can barely make out the dots but i assure you they're there.
snow in the midlands. joelene had never seen snow in person... and i didn't take this picture. on the other side of the camera is joelene's future husband. while they were finding snow i was finding a retarded museum celebrating the annihilation of native south africans in the draakensberg.
fun fact: creme soda here is green. BORK!!!
this is the bowling green that i go past on the way to work every day. and that big thing is a lawn mower.
that's a tank. and those cars are driving on durban/commercial/chief albert luthuli road. that road takes me from hayfields to town.
this is one of the two croquet pitches.
a close up of the pitch. the roll is so true i still can't believe it. now the only excuse you have more missing a shot is your own lack of skill. a little about the wickets. thick iron just barely as wide as the ball. angled shots... forget about it. i've still seen people put the ball straight through from 10 meters or so. and the mallets... inside the clubhouse is like an armory. tons of mallets with names on them of all shapes and sizes (square like pictured is the most common) and man the mallets are super heavy. maybe the balls are heavier too... maybe i'm just growing weak.
about the games i played today: it was doubles. four balls, four players. everyone goes for the same wicket at once with a team working to get one of their balls through, constantly hitting opponents balls away and maneuvering such that the next shot from the opposing team is blocked by something. lots of fun. i'm also the only person here that doesn't use traditional form but instead a 'hockey' stance.
these bowlers are pretty damn good eh?
the night before harry potter's final book came out, the midland mall had a big hullaballoo with a syphony, wand saleman, robe salesmen, etc. there was also this pair of birds with two live owls. actually the girl on the right isn't a bird, she's a fox!
here's the queue at 12:45. whilst bookstore in the states start selling the book at midnight, here we had to wait until 1am south africa time because we're an hour ahead of her majesty's england and it would be unfair for us to get the book before rowling's own country...
kevin (a coworker in roads) has a friend that managed to get 5 tickets to see south africa's kaiser chiefs (ahmakhozi) play epl's tottenham hotspurs in durban. kevin came around and picked us all up. this picture was taken at his friend “dash”s place. he's a rep or something for sony so he has their demo car at his place. those 17 lcd screens constitute probably only half of what's entirely in there. and the bass setup is ridiculous. he cranked the bass and it actually hurt. it felt like the brown note.
here's one of the shanty towns just across the road from a semi middle class neighborhood. everything encroaches around as the population grows.
that's kevin on the left. on the right is the absa stadium. we got there late so we had to hike a little to get there. we would soon join the crush of bodies flowing into the stadium. a large percentage of the fans that show up to the soccer matches in this country arrive by koombi and so parking isn't a huge issue. pedestrian traffic is a nightmare though.
those are cranes working on the durban world cup stadium. in the frame on the left is a man dressed as an ahmakozi (or tribal chief). he's probably rooting the kaiser 'chiefs'.
this stadium doesn't quite match fifa standards. see that spiral? there're four of those and that's how you get up to the seats. also, the pictures from rugby show how steep the pitch of the seating is. good seats but kinda scary.
the question on everyone's mind is “is south africa ready for the world cup?” whilst most of the time we get hung up on whether or not the stadia will be built on time, there's the issue of south africa fielding a decent soccer team. games against an english premier league team are a good opportunity to find out where south africa stands. south africa lost this game 1-2. and they scored the better looking of the three goals. but getting back to south africa being ready to host the world cup... look at the goalie box on the left (the inner box specifically). IT'S NOT SQUARE!!! not even close! oy vey...
see?
there're a couple o' honkeys in the crowd. the way you could tell a spur fan from a chiefs fan was easy. the english fans were drinking snuck in booze from their flasks (apparently they don't sell booze at soccer matches, only rugby) whilst the chiefs fan were lighting up joints and practically hot-boxing the stadium.
durban. off in the distance, with the gawdy neon, is the suncoast casino. popular with the indian population. i don't know how to spell “garrish” but i wish i could.
in case you're wondering what pietermaritzburg looks like... THIS ISN'T WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. this is a little snapshot of heaven behind the popular watering hole for the white kids: “franki bananas”. waitresses in short skirts and half-unzipped (optimist) tops serving drinks. this area is just a wee bit outside of town tucked in with an assload of car dealerships. in the distance to the right (over the N2 highway) is the midlands mall.
this is ramona. i think she's hiding her face on purpose. it's my second picture of a girl and birds for the weekend.
anyone that knows me knows i love old timey stuff. national geographics from the 1930's. old congressional addresses and orson wells radio shows from the 1940's etc. well it the hospital waiting room was this stack of time magazines. my first thought when i saw it out of the corner of my eye was: “the wall hasn't been down for 25 years has it?” then i realized that this was published BEFORE IT CAME DOWN. timely reading material.
if you read the blog for around this time it explains a little about the complicated circumstances that brought joelene back into my life. as usual, i'm back to taking pictures of her as often as i can.
this is an area a little outside town. there're some major dog food factories around here. i'm waiting for joelene and rhona to finish a girl gossip session. only once while taking this picture did i get approached for spare change. the guy had _just a dash_ of blood on his face.
jeepers creepers
durban in the distance taken from the absa stadium.
look at how puffy my face is. i've got some antibiotics in me to fight off a stomach problem. i should just crop myself out.
that's the moon rising in the sky
rematch between the sharks and blue bulls. this picture is taken from the umgeni water (joelene's company) box section. free booze and food. no wait. good life.
i even shelled out for an imitation south african rugby jersey. springboks are sa's national team. i thought i'd feel cool wearing something rugby related but it was more like wearing an american flag to a baseball game. i was rooting for rugby as a sport rather than a rugby team.

remember how i told you that they let you on the field after the game? i thought i'd head down there and check it out. this picture was taken from the pitch.
pure mayhem.
sunday was a trip to albert falls. warning: dangerous white rhino.
this is the lake at albert falls dam about 20 minutes outside of pmb town. it's also a reserve so there're animals wandering around all over the place. it's a popular destination for whites with boats but there're also plenty of picnic spots.
did i mention i bought a choose your own adventure novel at the flea market? took reading one to remind why they suck so much.
joelene is on the umgeni water social committee which means once a month approx. she mans the umgeni water bar at the coach house located behind the office. it's a good way to wind down the week.
so i've moved recently to a place with a bigger yard, bigger place, easier parking, bigger pool, etc. it's even closer to work. these are the two dogs fergus and jemma that protect the place. fergus is the tiny little dog and jemma is the big black scaredy cat. the two dogs tear around the back yard on a regular basis but this video seems to capture it nicely.
i went to another rugby match at the umgeni water box. thought i should video one of the pre-game dance routines. george would dig it because it's sponsored by “jockey” the maker of underpants so they're all wearing underpants instead of cheerleader outfits. there's also the sharkettes that run around the field and flash their underpants. standard at every sharks game.
sunny day in pmb waiting for our chicken at nando's.

sugar cane fields outside of town.
one of the many many shanty towns that encompass pmb.
this is rhona and me. she works down the hall. she and joelene are pretty close
here's a quick shot of the bedroom.
this is the living room setup. still under construction
thursday was womens day. it's a national holiday. so on wednesday, umgeni holds a big function for the women. they all dress up like women in the usa do for halloween. a standard costume is “school girl” seeing as every girl in the country either is going or once went to a school requiring uniforms. joelene still has hers so she wore it that day along with fake pigtails. she won a three day stay at a nice hotel in durban for her and a guest. my girl gets dressed up as a school girl and i get a free weekend in the beach town of durban? the universe must have me confused for some philanthropist or something.
