New Lanark
This village on the River Clyde became famous when Robert Owen was Mill Manager from 1800 – 1825. Owen transformed life in New Lanark with ideas, which were at least a hundred years ahead of their time. Child labour and corporal punishment were abolished, villagers provided with decent homes, schools, free health care and affordable food. From the village it is a short walk to the spectacular Falls of Clyde, which have inspired many famous artists. New Lanark is still a living community and a World Heritage Centre. Here communism worked well, on a small scale.
