The first set of images is how she looked before our work started
Hard to see any of the woodwork as the finish had been removed and she sat long enough for the teak to turn white
interior spaces where not so worn
What wood?
A hint of color here if you know where to look
May 5 2008. The sanding and restoration is in its second week now and the following images will show a significant difference to the appearance of the beautiful grains
The blue is not paint, its masking tape
This side sanded
This side not sanded - yet
not sanded
Starboard side sanded while the port side is underway
another comparison of the before and after
windows are quite tedious and tricky
previous workers used the wrong wood type plugs when filling holes, thats why they're white with a previous black one
and a missing one
this is how it should be done. this is only the first step, glue in the same kind of wood makes all the difference
a day for the glue to cure then the plugs will be cut flush and sanded smooth. the end result will be a repair that will be hard to find
look at him go...
The lids of the storage boxes had some major issues with the fiberglass covering so it was removed and then sanded
the woodwork is nearing the completion of the initial sanding phase
the beautiful grains are coming to life once again
all the stanchions are removed for proper repair, cleaning, sanding and painting
after removal and cleaning the brass mount plates get painted bright white, as to the owners choice.
The white is only the primer coat. Top coat to be applied after the woodwork is finished
which was no easy task because the hardware and fasteners had deteriorated to near non-existence in some cases, or they would break when trying ot remove them.
If you don't know what you're doing here you can really mess things up in a fast way. the trick is getting the fasteners out without doing damage to anything else.
rear deck area being prepped for chemical stripping of old finish
Shore power boxes sanded ready for primer
gate stakes ready for finish
chemical stripping underway at rear deck cap and hand rails. note everything needs masking before this operation to protect painted surfaces
these are the teak plugs used for repairing dead and worn holes
after the epoxy glue has cured the remaining plug material is cut away then sanded smooth to surrounding surface
stanchions are clamped into position before re-drilling new mounting holes. here the center two are being installed so the outside two can be removed and prepped
After years of service and sanding to remove the wear, a considerable amount of material has been removed. These areas then get sanded smooth to existing cap rail height
Lots of compound curves sweep the many contours of this beauty
The shore power boxes get their primer
It takes a full crew more than two days to mask off all the wood and clean before any varnishing begins
Finally after several weeks of sanding and various preparations the varnishing begins and the grains pop
There will be several coats of varnish with sanding between coats as required
But what a difference already - two coats only of ten total
Gorgeous grains everywhere
The details and joinery can now be fully appreciated
The wheelhouse door sill looks awsome
some sanding requires some unusual positioning and techniques to accomplish the required results
in this case laying down on the job is completely exceptable
JUNE - after many coats of finish, we get to sand much of it off...
you may be asking why in the world we do such a thing because its not looking so good any more
this is wet finish
light sanding gets everything silky smooth
although it looks pretty good before sanding you can see little hollows in the surface of the finish
so it gets sanded
you can see little dimples here in the finish so
we sand
then clean again and apply more finish
now
she
starts
to shine...
somebody turn down the lights. Getting close now, still a little more work and she'll sparkle
back at the shop the storage lids and trim pieces are nearing the same point in finish
The fifteenth and final coat of varnish has been applied all that remains is the tape removal and reassembly of the many rails posts and various hardware.
