July 27, 2008, 9AM - Put in at the Morro Bay State Park Marina below the Morro Bay museum (we have plenty of water). We usually launch 15-20 minutes early if all voting participants are ready to go. Participants are REQ'D to WEAR properly fitting Coast Guard Apv'd PFD's at all times on the water, and MUST be able to perform unassisted self-recovery from a capsize. Sit-on-top kayaks are recommended for beginners. Sit-inside kayaks MUST have bailing equipment and BOTH fore and aft sealed flotation chambers, or fully secured flotation bags. Tow ropes front & rear are recommended on all boats. New paddlers welcome. We are mature people paddling sit-on-tops and closed-deck (sit-inside) kayaks, with an occasional canoe. He did not eat while we were observing. These images (downsized to 1600 pixels) were taken with a toy Olympus Stylus 770SW camera.

Montana de Oro Point Buchon Diablo Property, walk 11/24 /07 with Norma, Wendy, Barbara, Sylvia, Wade, Helen, Mike. A section of pristine coastline on Pacific Gas and Electric property opened to the public on July 13. The trail is a 1 mile loop. Eventually it will be extended to 3 miles. The trail is open from 8 - 5 Friday - Sunday. The entrance to the trail may be found at the southern end of Pecho Road in Montana de Oro State Park, Ca. (two miles past the historic ranch house). Point Buchon is the most westerly point on the Central Coast.

Marc Schulman of Orchid Outriggers http://orchidoutriggers.com, Los Osos, CA, took me out in his 17' outrigger canoe to photograph these Ospreys, Egrets, and Surf Scoters. We paddled six hours. I shot with a Canon 20D w/ 100-400mm IS lens w/ an older model Tamron 1.4 Tele-extender which preserves autofocus. If image information shows 400mm it should probably read 560mm as the Tamron tele-extender does not communicate properly with the Canon 20D and thus all mm values need be be multiplied by 1.4 to be accurate

Kayaked Morro Bay, CA, testing the Canon 20D w/ 100-400mm IS lens, no polarizer, bright day (if windy), high ISO, high shutter speeds.. Harbor Seals, Snown Egrets, etc. Re: "Fuzzy" photos of birds from a boat: I tried to take the advice offered - do have a bit better result. This time I was on a one-person 14' kayak instead of the 17' two-person outrigger... the more important differences were: 1. Picked a much sunnier day (but now windy w/ 10-15 knot winds), 2. Left the polarizer filter at home, 3. Practiced better etiquette - got close more slowly through patience (before we approached the subjects to fast). 4. Experimented with higher ISOs and high-shutter speeds while maintaining a reasonable depth-of-focus. A total of 11 photos with ISO's ranging for 400, 800, and 1600, and Shutter speeds 1/1250 to 1/4000, F7.1 to F16

The Baywood/Los Osos "Boatzart concert at the pier" -- Sun. Sept 10, 2006. We launched seven sit-on-top kayaks at 9:15AM from the Morro Bay State Park Marina for a tour of Shark Inlet prior. The Los Osos "BOAT"zart Festival is the only concert you can attend by land or sea. Featuring: Big Rock Balalaika Orchestra - a 9-piece group of musicians from Russia.
