On A Tear
The idea for this project came to me one afternoon while I was scanning torn pieces of paper for a digital media project. As I sat at my desk tearing paper to be scanned - it’s the best way to simulate the quality of a tear in digital media - two things occurred to me. The first was how absurd it was to be scanning torn paper so that I could have something that looked like torn paper, when in fact I had the actual artifact in my hands already. The second thing that occurred to me was how much I enjoyed the sensation of tearing the paper. Immediately, I picked up another piece of paper and slowly started to tear it. I listened to the sound of the tear and watched the new edges form as the paper began to separate into two pieces.
