Aix-en-Provence

On Tuesday we took the train up to Aix-en-Provence to meet Emily's friend Miriam and walk around the town for the day. It does not have many big tourist attractions per se in the way that Marseille does, but the old town is lovely to wander around and we found a nice park where we could walk along a stream. It seemed cleaner, more relaxed and generally more pleasant than Marseille. And despite a forecast of rain in the afternoon, it was sunny all day!

Marseille

We spent two days exploring Marseille itself, the Monday and the Wednesday (before I flew out Wednesday night). On the Monday we walked up to Notre-Dame de la Garde via a number of other sights then continued on southeast from there to a couple of parks and then back via the Noailles market. Unfortunately, it being Easter Monday, a lot of things were shut. We then headed up to Palais de Longchamp and the "Funny Zoo" in its gardens. On the Wednesday we first went to Palais du Pharo and Fort Saint-Nicolas, then headed in the other direction around the harbour, through the old town (le Panier) and some other parts of the central city before going back to Castellane for a crepe via some nice squares, then to a cheese shop for Emily.

Marseille — Calanques

On our first day in Marseille the weather was looking nice so we went out to the Calanques, a series of cliffs and mini fjords along the coast between Cassis and Marseille. We caught a bus to Luminy and walked from there out to Calanque de Morgiou, along to Calanque de Sormiou by an inland route with some nice hills to scramble up and down, then back into Marseille from there.

I arrived in Warsaw late Friday night, explored it on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday morning (Sunday was taken up with a trip to Lublin), and then we headed to Budapest on Tuesday afternoon. It was pretty cold and snowed much of the time I was there.

Edinburgh

We spent the final weekend in Edinburgh, before my parents drove down to continue their travels and I caught my train back to London. We saw a couple more castles, the Scottish Parliament, and various other nice parts of Edinburgh. I walked up to Calton Hill and Arthur's Seat to enjoy the views.

Inverness to Pitlochry

We only stayed one night in Pitlochry, and did not see very much. We stopped by the Falls of Bruar on the way there for a short walk up to the two bridges over the falls, and in Pitlochry we took a short walk up to the Black Spout.

Inverness

We stayed one night in Inverness. On the evening of our arrival we had a bit of a walk round the central city past Inverness Castle and a number of nice churches. In the next morning we walked up along the river to near the start of the canal, and on our way on to Pitlochry we stopped at Culloden Battlefield and the Clava Cairns.

Amsterdam

I went to Amsterdam for the long weekend. It happened that one of the interns from Google London was also there the same weekend, so we hung out during the day for some sightseeing. Unfortunately it rained a lot on Saturday and Sunday, often quite heavily. On Sunday we took a daytrip up to Volendam and Edam. On Monday we finally had some sunny weather before we had to catch our flights back to London.

Fractured jaw

I came off my bike on the way home on Tuesday 14th February and fractured my jaw in 3 places, so spent several days in hospital to get it fixed up. Now I have my jaw strapped shut for 6 weeks so can only drink through a straw.

Lund

We spent two nights in Lund staying with a friend of Charlotte's. We saw Lund itself on the Saturday morning and early afternoon, then continued on to Malmö and (briefly) Copenhagen. Lund is a fairly small university city so there is not too much to see, but we went to an organ recital at the domkyrkan, had a wander around the university botanic gardens, went to the Kulturen museum of old Swedish buildings, and had a little bit of a look around the city.

Oslo

We spent just one night in Oslo, though tried to make the most of both days there. On the Tuesday after finding the house where we were staying with some people by Blindern University we saw some of the central city and waterfront including the domkirken, opera house and Akershus Fortress; on the Wednesday we saw Holmenkollen ski jump and the ski museum there, Vigeland skulpture park, before heading on to Ljungskile that afternoon.

Uppsala

I stayed with Charlotte in Uppsala for 4 nights. I got there late on Friday night, spent Saturday and Monday in Stockholm, and flew to Oslo on Tuesday morning, so most of these photos are from the Sunday we spent exploring Uppsala and Gamla Uppsala (the old town where Uppsala used to be until it was moved to its present location in 1273 AD). For dinner we joined some of Charlotte's friends (other international students at Uppsala University) for home-made pizza, and I made dessert. Amusingly we had 2 Americans, 2 Germans, 2 Polish people, 2 Kiwis, and (the odd one out) one Chinese girl.

Stockholm

I spent the better part of two days in Stockholm: Saturday 8th October with Charlotte, and then Monday 10th October by myself. Unfortunately my camera batteries did not work on the Saturday so I only took a few photos with my phone instead. On Saturday we walked around some of the city, and went on a guided tour of the Kungliga Slottet (royal palace / apartments); on Monday I went to the Vasa Museum and Skansen and walked around Södermalm a bit.

Paris, take 2

I spent a weekend in Paris, staying with Matthew Sinclair and his parents. Unfortunately Matthew had to work all weekend on an overdue report, but I did get to see a reasonable amount of Paris by myself on the Saturday, and Matthew joined me to check out Nuit Blanche for a few hours that night after dinner. I also saw a few more things on Sunday afternoon before I had to catch my train back to London. But hopefully the photos speak for themselves, along with their captions.

We spent two nights in Sevilla, in a hostel in the old town. It was very hot. The old town was cool though, lots of narrow crooked streets that reminded me rather of Venice, though without the canals of course and not quite as cool. Still, it was interesting.

Zurich

We spent just one night in Zürich, the last night of my trip. On the Saturday afternoon and night was the annual street parade, so the city was packed full of people. Sunday was a bit quieter, and Charlotte had to leave fairly early to get her train to Italy anyway so I had the afternoon to myself.

Berne

We stopped for a few hours in Berne in the morning on the way from Interlaken to Zürich as we had to change trains there anyway. I was a bit dubious at first that we would have enough time to see anything much, but it turned out to be a lovely city with the old town right by the train station. We went on a (German) tour of the Bundeshaus, which was interesting to see but surprisingly small, and then wandered around the old town for a little while before buying lunch and some chocolate and heading on our way. I am glad we took the opportunity.

Interlaken — Männlichen and around

On the Friday while we were in Interlaken we decided to take a day trip to see some of the mountains. We decided that going up the Jungfraujoch was really just too expensive, so instead we took a round trip up to Männlichen, via Grindelwald on the way up and Wengen and Lauterbrunnen on the way down. We took a train to Grindelwald, gondola up to Männlichen, walked around for a while, including following the track about halfway to Kleine Scheidegg, then took another gondola down to Wengen, walked down a steep path to Lauterbrunnen, then after looking around for a bit took the train back to Interlaken (well, actually Wilderswill I think). There was some beautiful scenery! It reminded me of New Zealand in some ways.

Interlaken

We stayed in Interlaken for two nights. There is not a whole lot to see in Interlaken itself, but there are many amazing mountains nearby. My photos from our trip up Männlichen are in a separate album. Still, Interlaken was nice. It is situated in-between two lakes, Brienzersee and Thunersee. Hence the name, presumably. We hired bikes and went for a cycle around to see both lakes, and each went for a brief swim in Thunersee.

Lucerne — Pilatus

On our second day in Lucerne we took the Silver Roundtrip up Mount Pilatus. This meant catching a train to Alpnachstad, taking the cogwheel railway up Pilatus from there (the steepest in the world, apparently!), spending a fair while walking around some of the different tracks up the top of Pilatus to a few different peaks and eating out lunch, then taking three panoramic gondolas down to Kriens via Fräkmüntegg and Krienseregg. From Kriens we could then catch a bus back to Lucerne proper. It was lovely, though like everything in Switzerland rather expensive. Unfortunately our views were rather limited by the large amount of cloud all around us by the time we got to the top, but we did manage to see some things through brief gaps in it.

Lucerne

We stayed two nights in Lucerne, in a Korean hostel with Korean fried rice for breakfast and lots of Kimchi in the fridge. It was a bit different. The city was lovely, with a nice old town and a wonderful lake. As well as what is shown in these photos we went on a paddleboat on the lake (which was rather slow) and I later walked around some of it and went for a quick swim, which was lovely though a bit on the cool side. We also went up Pilatus one day; the photos of that are in a separate album as there are rather a few.

St. Gallen

Our train to Luzern departed from St. Gallen, so Sarina drove us there and the three of us looked around for a bit before we had to catch the train. In particular we went into the library of the Abbey of St. Gallen, where there was an exhibition with a lot of old musical manuscripts and various texts. The room was also beautiful.

Liechtenstein

In between Austria and Switzerland we spent just over an hour in Liechtenstein. We decided to get off the bus in Schaan and walk down to Vaduz, which turned out to be a bad idea as it was hard work with all our bags and not a very interesting route. The old town at Vaduz was interesting, but we ended up with not much time to see it before our bus left for Buchs. Anyway, we took a few photos along the way to prove we were there.

Arbon

We stayed for a night with Charlotte's friend Sarina and her family in their farmhouse near Romanshorn. Sarina took us biking through the beautiful countryside nearby, a small old town (Arbon, I think), and down to the lake Bodensee. We went swimming briefly in the lake and for a bit longer in some nice outdoor pools on the lakeside. It was an excellent way to spend an afternoon, and followed by a lovely homecooked dinner of Raclette.

Feldkirch

We did not spend much time in Feldkirch, arriving there on Sunday night and leaving fairly early the next morning for Romanshorn via Liechtenstein. Still, we managed to see a few interesting sights an a bit of the old town on the Sunday night. Finding anywhere to eat at that time of night on a Sunday evening in a small town was difficult though. There photos were all taken on Charlotte's camera, some by her and some by me, as I did not have mine with me while we were exploring.

We got to Salzburg on Saturday afternoon and left on Sunday evening, but managed to see quite a bit in that time. There were a lot of Sound of Music-related things around; in fact our hostel had the film playing in one of the common rooms every day. We did not watch it.

We spent two nights in Vienna, as the start of my Austria / Switzerland holiday. I joined Charlotte there to travel together, she having come over from Poland the previous night. The city is lovely, with lots of nice parks, a few canals, and the Danube river in three parts.

Cambridge

5 of us went up to Cambridge for the day, to see the city. We went for a bus tour, visited the King's College chapel and grounds, Peterhouse, the Fitzwilliam museum, and went punting on the river Cam. Unfortunately it rained for much of the day, but it did clear up nicely in the late afternoon.

Ightham Mote walk

Joanna, Matthew and I went for a walk around Ightham Mote and the surrounding area, in Kent. The weather was decent most of the day, sunny at times, and we had a picnic lunch. Joanna made pancakes! Then we took the train back to London and had dinner at Culture Grub near Waterloo, a tasty and affordable Chinese restaurant. It was a fun day, and rather more relaxed than the preceding weekend of the London Swing Festival.

Pompeii

We spent a day in Pompeii Scavi. Pompeii was an ancient Roman city which was covered in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted, killing its inhabitants but preserving it as it stood at the time, until it was later excavated and explored. It was certainly one of the highlights of the trip for me, especially as the textbook series we used when I was learning Latin in college was based (fictionally) in Pompeii.

Naples

We spent Thursday night in Naples, and only the Thursday afternoon and evening looking around the city as we spent all of Friday looking around Pompeii Scavi and then on trains. Our first impressions were not very good, walking from the train station to the hostel in the rain while some protest or strike or something stopped all the traffic, but we did find some nicer spots later on as the rain cleared and the sun came out, and some tasty (and cheap) pizza for lunch and dinner.

Pisa

We took a day trip to Pisa, as it is only a short train ride from Florence. We saw the Leaning Tower, of course, but also the Duomo and Battistero di San Giovanni, various parts of the wall, churches around the city, and so on. We even biked out to the sea, though did not have time to stay long before heading back, sadly.

We had three nights in Florence, but only spent the Tuesday walking around as we got there late on Monday night from Venice, spent most of Wednesday in Pisa, and left fairly early on Thursday for Naples. So these photos are all from our single full day exploring Florence itself.

We spent one night in Venice, and wandered around a fair bit of the city during the two days. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos inside the Basilica di San Marco (as we went for a service that happened to be on for Easter Monday), nor in the museums or inside the Palazzo Ducale. You will have to imagine those parts. Other than that, enjoy the photos!

We spent one night in Milan, so parts of two days. The first day, after arriving and checking into our hotel, we wandered around the city and saw many of the main sights. The second day, Easter Sunday, we went to a service at the Duomo, then had a quick look around a bit more of the surrounding area before heading on our way, taking the train to Venice.

Kota Kinabalu — Museum & heritage village

On the Thursday we wandered around Kota Kinabalu, and went to the state museum and heritage village. The museum was not particularly good, but the heritage village was interesting. They had examples of the various different styles of longhouse traditionally built by the different tribes on Borneo, which we could go inside and look around.

Kinabalu Park

We went up to Kinabalu Park for a couple of days (1 night). We were not able to climb up the mountain proper, but there were lots of nice trails to walk below the checkpoint, and it was nice to be up high enough that the temperature was more pleasant. The park entrance and headquarters is at an altitude of about 1600 m.

Kota Kinabalu — Islands

Shirley and I went out to two of the islands near KK, Manukan and Mamutik. It was lovely and sunny, with beautiful clear (and warm) water. Unfortunately I got really sunburnt, despite my sunscreen. I guess my back has not seen much sun in years.

London — New Year's Day parade

I went to the parade on New Year's Day. It went past for about 3 hours with only a few short breaks, and included (among other things) 23 different marching bands from various high schools across the USA. There were also various dignitaries and societies, floats from some of the London boroughs (although quite a few of them never showed up, despite being on the programme!), vintage cars, Minis, motorbikes, giant inflatable cartoon characters, cheerleaders, morris dancers, miniature steam engines, clowns, buses and an excellent country dance group from Texas.

Munich — Deutsches Museum

I spent about 6 hours at the Deutsches Museum in in Munich, and wished that I could have spent at least twice as long there. It is an excellent an enormous museum of science, technology and industry, with exhibits on everything from oil mining to machine tools to robots to nanotechnology, all sorts of physics, aeronautics, glass-blowing, astronomy, medical technology, musical instruments, and many other things. I only got through most of 2 of the 7 floors.

Berlin — Christmas markets and miscellaneous wandering

On Sunday morning we had a quick look around the area near Zoologischer Garten before going on a city tour (the photos from which are in another album). After the tour we looked around the Museum Island for a bit before going into the Museum of German History (again, the photos from the museum are in a separate album), and then headed to the Christmas market at Alexanderplatz. We had dinner at a pub we had been recommended as a good place to go for typical German food. On Monday morning we went for a walk in Tiergarten before Thi left, then I wandered all around various parts of the city I had not yet visited, from Frankfurter Tor back to Zoologischer Garten via quite a few different areas.

Berlin — Germany History Museum

On Sunday afternoon, after the city tour, we went to the German History Museum for a few hours. They had an exhibit about Hitler and the Second World War, a range of German art and displays about architecture, and a large exhibit about the history of Germany over the last millennium or so with lots of clothing, art, furniture, armour and so on.

Guildford & River Wey hike

For the third hike that our Meetup group did, we took the train out to Guildford and walked along the River Wey a bit and then around the countryside a bit. We stopped for lunch at an old church up a little hill. It was quite foggy and parts of the track were really muddy, but we did not get any more than drizzle, fortunately.

Lord Mayor's Show and more

I and a couple of others went to watch the parade for the Lord Mayor's show. We stood across the road from the Royal Courts of Justice, where the first half of the parade ended. Afterwards we had a look around St. Paul's cathedral, watched the fireworks on the Thames (also part of the Lord Mayor's Show) and went to a couple of free jazz shows at the Southbank Centre as part of the London Jazz Festival.

Ridgeway hike

I went on a hike with a Meetup group. We took the train from Euston to Tring, then walked a loop from there along the Ridgeway Path past the Invinghoe Beacon and the Bridgewater Monument. It was good fun, and the weather turned out surprisingly well too.

Zurich for GEEK

I spent just under two days in Zurich at a conference for work. On the Monday night 6 of us went up Uetliberg to build a fire over which to cook Pörkölt. On the Tuesday I went popped out and went for a brief walk.

San Francisco — Tuesday: Marin Headlands

On Tuesday I retraced my steps from Sunday afternoon as far as the Golden Gate Bridge, walked across the bridge, and then headed west through the hills of the Marin Headlands along the Coastal Trail to Rodeo Lagoon, around the lagoon and Rodeo Beach, then back via the Miwok Trail, Rodeo Valley Trail and SCA Trail until I rejoined the first part of the Coastal Trail to head back the way I had first come. There were lots of nice views, some of which I attempted to photograph. The weather was pretty decent too.

San Francisco — Monday: Clockwise through downtown, Haight and more

On the Monday I walked east from my hostel, around Fisherman's Wharf with all the tourists, up Telegraph Hill to the Coit Tower, via Jackson Square and various plazas, down Market Street with detours to Yerba Buena Gardens, Union Square and the civic centre, up Corona Heights and Buena Vista Park, through the Haight and Japantown then finally back to the hostel. Not a bad little tour I guess.

San Francisco — Sunday: Anticlockwise coast

On Sunday afternoon I headed anticlockwise around the coastline from my hostel, through The Presidio, stopping at Fort Point, under the Golden Gate Bridge, past Baker Beach, China Beach, Land's End, Ocean Beach, through the Golden Gate Park then back through Pacific Heights.

San Francisco — Saturday: Russian Hill, Chinatown &c.

After checking in to the hostel where I spent my nights in San Francisco, I went for a quick explore around the nearby streets. I saw the crookedest street in the city, a bunch of steep streets, Chinatown, and a few other bits of pieces.
