There are eight 17-year cicadas clearly visible in this picture. There are probably 8,000 more hiding in the background foliage. What a NOISE these things make!

2004 Brood X. It's no wonder people think these harmless insects are dangerous. Demonic red eyes, fiery orange wings, and their sound, so loud you have to raise your voice over it at times.
Once they've done what they were born to do they fall to the ground and return to the soil whence they came.
