2009 Santa Pub Crawl

12/12/09 Marked the 5th Annual Santa Pub-Crawl in Dayton, Ohio. This event helped collect donations for the United States Marine Corps "Toys for Tots" program and Montgomery County Children's Services. The route for this Santa Pub Crawl was as follows: Begin at The Dublin Pub, on to The Trolley Stop, then to Blind Bob's for the Costume Contest, back to The Tumbleweed Connection, down to The Oregon Express, and wrap things up at George Newcom's Tavern or Ned Pepper's Bar and Grill. I couldn't get away from work before the crawl got to Blind Bob's, but I figured the costume contest would be a good spot for photos, so my wife and I headed down with our donations. We couldn't stay long so, if anyone knows who won, let me know. Also I'd be happy to see other photos from throughout the night. Feel free to share your links here.

2009 Hauntfest

Images from Hauntfest on Fifth Street in Dayton, Ohio's Historic Oregon District, aka the Oregon Arts District. Hauntfest, formerly Boo-N-Brew, takes place annually on East Fifth Street between Patterson Blvd & Wayne Ave. The event features bands, food vendors, street performers, and thousands of fun-loving costumed revelers. This year's event included wrestling matches by EGO Wrestling (no photos here, video of 1 whole match coming to YouTube soon). Enjoy the crazy, inventive, interesting costumes, sexy hotties, monsters, and super heroes!

20090609 Lightning

About half an hour before I started shooting I had tried to take the dog outside because we knew a storm was coming and it might be a while before we could go out again. At that time we were chased back indoors by the approaching storm's fireworks. The storm was coming right at us and there was no rain yet, to obscure the view, so I decided to fetch my camera. I've shot lightning before, about 10 years ago, but haven't tried it with my current camera, primarily for lack of opportunities. Unlike my past lightning shoots, this time I kept myself indoors. The early photos, with the landscape in the background, are looking West at the incoming storm. The later shots are looking East after the storm moved overhead and to the South. About five minutes after the last photo was taken I was able to take the dog outside (W of the building). Lightning flashes could still be seen from SE but the sky above had become clear and a brilliant, nearly full, but waning, moon was visible in the SW sky.

20090501 Light Up Dayton

"Light Up Dayton" is a planned event to highlight downtown Dayton locales and Dayton's night skyline. I'm not very practiced at flashless nighttime photography, so I tried many different tricks. Toward the end of the evening, which immediately followed my workday, I had grown mentally weary, perhaps even a bit lazy, and settled on taking meter bracketed shots with a mind toward experimenting with some HDR (High Dynamic Range) compositing. Now I have to make time to learn how to create HDR images. It's very possible I've chosen the worst possible subjects for such experiments. I seem to recall that bright daylight images work best for compositing HDR images. Maybe I'm mistaken. I hope so.

Monsters of Burlesque

Opening Night of the Monsters of Burlesque Ohio Tour (April 29, 2009) - Master of Ceremonies, Neil O'Fortune; featuring performances from Clams Casino, Johnny Porkpie, Nasty Canasta, and Creamy Stevens; accompanied by DJ Fresh Prince of Darkness on the soundboard. This was a great show and much needed departure for Dayton's entertainment scene.

Dad's Rainbow

Walter Bonnett passed away on 2/26/09. Family and friends gathered to honor him at The Trolley Stop on March 8th. Shortly after the celebration of his life some family members were visiting at his home, going through family photos, when this rainbow appeared. I had left my camera behind but had to fetch it when we found some writing we couldn't read (the camera would allow us to enlarge the text), so my camera was ready when this special event occured. One of Dad's favorite songs was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and he always had a peculiar knack for spotting coincidences. I had planned to include the song on a CD for the gathering but I never got around to it for working on a DVD slideshow. I am not a superstitious man, but this, and another (extremely inexplicable) situation I won't go into here, was a bit much for me to mark down as mere coincidence. Thanks Dad.

20080818 City Life '08 last chance night shots

J. Seward Johnson's City Life statues were again on display throughout downtown for most of the summer. I hadn't yet made time to shoot them this year and I spotted them being taken up Monday afternoon. To my surprise, they were still on the Riverscape lot on my way home, so I parked and joined a group of people having some fun with them. I noticed that someone had ruined the wire-frame glasses of one statue and I've heard that the man and dog piece, titled "Yuck!", originally included a Frisbee or other flying disc as a separate piece which was stolen from the display. I knew I wasn't likely to get ideal shots under these lights so I chose to try some unusual things. I was trying to catch the gaze of some of the statues. I also wanted to play with depth of field a little bit. Shortly, some other people strolled by to also get pics of and with the statues. All the while, some other people (real ones) were enjoying the swings along the levee and the fountain and the very nice eveni

20080817 Breakfast with The Beatles and VenusLoveCircus

WTUE sponsors Breakfast with The Beatles. Clobber did a good job hosting the event but Ann Stevens was missed. I didn't catch the reason for her absence. My third Smart car, a blue one, completes a set of Smarts in primary colors. Then, a shot of the fountains is followed by some images of VenusLoveCircus performing a Beatles title that I'd never heard before. I can't recall the title. Later, offstage, they played a second song called "Goodbye" which they had hoped to perform center stage, but we who were near the concession stand enjoyed it just fine. It was beautiful late-summer morning with many other enthusiastic performers having fun in the sun.

20080810 German Picnic

Just a few shots from a beautiful summer afternoon. A convertible 'Smart' (tiny car, division of Mercedes Benz), top down, greeted us. Roberta shot me enjoying a bratwurst with sauerkraut and mustard. I tried to shoot some scenic images showing the high percentage of nature to development... one of the things I love so much about Dayton. And the same convertible 'Smart' with it's top up.

20080723 Tree-rarium

While trying to capture some close-up photos of another emerging cicada I noticed this little purple-flowering plant growing inside the crotch of the tree. It's not something terribly rare, but you don't see it every day, either. Also unusual... I thought flowers closed up at night?

20080723 Cicada Total Emergence

At long last I've found a cicada prior to emergence from it's shell. But wait, there wasn't just one cicada. There were THREE! As usual, I was walking the dog. As usual, the dog went crazy seeking and devouring things in the grass under the tree. I have long suspected she was eating my bugs, but there was never any crack and crunch sound, so I thought she was eating some grub or another. I failed to put some facts together. The outer shell is softened by mucous prior to emergence, and the mature cicada inside the shell also has a softened exoskeleton to allow it to escape the shell. To the dog these were the ultimate snack. She probably thinks of these bugs the same way I think of a Snickers bar. Yum! The dog also has a strong love of earthworms and seeks them feverishly after a rain storm. I suspect she is able to track both the worms and the cicadas by the smell of fresh dirt. Anyway, she was trying to get at these creepy crawly treats she loves so much, but I held her back so that

20080722 Emerging Cicada

I found another cicada fresh out of it's shell while walking my dog, but, once again, it took too long to finish up with the dog and I missed my chance to shoot it's curled wings. If the opportunity presents itself again I'll have to act quickly. The bug was mostly out, it's tail-end still in the shelll when I first spotted it. It had freed itself and it's wings straightened within ten minutes. So, if you get this chance, DON'T WASTE ANY TIME! Get the shots while the shootin's good!

20080720 Dayton Air Show

The 2008 Dayton International Airshow had great weather this year and featured some astounding feats by the various stunt planes and military demonstrations. I've always been impressed with our aviation capabilities, but F-22 Raptor has raised the bar beyond what I knew was possible. Not only that, but even a stalwart like the F-18 Super Hornet does things I didn't suspect could be done with the older generation of fighter jets. The Dayton Air Show NEVER disappoints.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

My wife took us to Friday Fireworks Night at Great American Ballpark featuring the Cincinnati Reds versus the New York Mets. It was Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame Inductee weekend. Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Ken Griffey, Jr. were honored with a free framed commemorative poster featuring the three players to the first 20,000 fans in attendance. I took the opportunity to test some of the limits of my camera with a lot of zoom shots of players. Also included are some shots of the post-game fireworks show, the park itself in daylight and after dark, and some shots of prominent structures near the ball park.

This black with yellow Smart was at Easton Towne Centre in a space marked for Easton Security Only. Perhaps they purchased this vehicle as a warmer version (for winter) of the golf carts they tool around the campus in during summer.

Arc de Square

A single image of the Dayton skyline taken from Good Samaritan Hospital opens this collection followed by interior photos of the Dayton Arcade, aka Arcade Square. Also included are exterior shots of the mostly vacant 5-building Arcade complex, other nearby buildings and businesses, and Dayton's Courthouse Square fountain. The fountain's water has been dyed green to match the color theme of "Urban Nights", the event that featured this rare opening of the Arcade for walking tours. Save the Arcade!

Beautiful Sunday

We went to Riverscape this afternoon. There were many other people enjoying this gorgeous afternoon as well. Riverscape is a wonderful little gathering place featuring monuments to innovations and inventions from Dayton. It is also home to a garden with decorative fountains and benches for relaxing, a play fountain surrounded by tables and chairs for the kids (and their fun-loving guardians) is situated between "The Flying Dog" concession stand (good food, cold drinks, and tasty treats) and the rental booth for paddle-boats, hydro-bikes, and bicycles. All of these things make for a very enjoyable afternoon, especially when mixed with the particularly fine weather we've had the last few days. I hope these few images will help illustrate the pleasant nature of one of my favorite Dayton offerings, Riverscape MetroPark.

City Life Statues by J. Seward Johnson

City Life, the incongruously named display of non-life in a virtual ghost town. A few of these statues are creepy to me, but well done. They are nice statues, impressive really, just a poorly named display. Shades of Westworld or The Twilight Zone. Spooky feelings aside, Marilyn's got a great set of gams.

Full Moon Over Fifth Street

These images were captured from in front of Bonnett's Book Store and Just Fishit Aquatics on East Fifth Street in Dayton, Ohio. I've been trying to take good pictures of the full moon for some time and this is the first time I've tried it with the moon near the horizon. It's absolutely true that the moon appears much larger on the horizon, probably due to some magnifying effect of Earth's atmosphere. The moon takes up at least 4 times more space in the frame of these shots than it does in my previous shots of the moon high in the night sky.

Tree Struck by Lightning

My brother and my son spotted this lightning strike from storms on the evening of October 4th, 2006 and suggested I check it out. Anything worth seeing is worth photographing, so here's the scoop. [I might have taken more and better photos if I hadn't been bitten by a tiny caterpillar on a piece of wood I had intended to save. I don't know if it liked the way I tasted because I startled when he bit, throwing the piece of tree he was on and brushing at the bite, instinctively. The little bugger made me cautious.]

9/20/06 - 3-Vehicle Accident, Overturned Van

In Dayton, Ohio, East Fifth Street is a two-lane city street, one lane East, one lane West, and Jackson Street is a one-way northbound side street. A Dodge Neon was properly facing North on Jackson attempting to turn left onto westbout East Fifth. There was a collision with a full-size passenger van also attempting to travel west on East Fifth. It is unclear if the van was properly traveling west on East Fifth or if the van was improperly southbound on one-way northbound Jackson Street attempting to turn right onto westbound East Fifth. In any case after the Dodge and the van made contact, the van was severely left of center and collided with an oncoming Cadillac. The hood and driver's side engine compartment of the Cadillac was destroyed. The impact was such that the van was knocked onto it's passenger side. Eyewitnesses to the accident in progress, as it happened, will be essential in this case. Contact Dayton Police if you have information concerning this accident.

Mantis v. Cicada 20050824

One fine August afternoon in 2005 my brother and I heard the sound of a cicada coming through the open front door of our shop. A cicada on a downtown city street is strange enough, but this one did not sound as it should. I've always been a cicada fan, having collected their shells as a child, so I went out to invesitigate. I tracked the sound of cicada distress to the small tree in front of our shop. Investigating further, I spotted the cicada but I couldn't determine why it was making such a racket. So, I headed back inside to work. The cicada kept up the noise so that I was compelled to go check on it again. I imagined that it had been wounded escaping from a bird (a common occurence during the "Brood X Cicada Invasion" of 2004), but when I spotted the noisemaker again I realized it wasn't alone, and discovered the true cause of it's alarm... My terrible photos of a beautiful restaurant. Taken with my first digital camera, a Casio QV-11, these photos are low-resolution (320 x 240) and have been extremely edited to make up for lighting conditions that were beyond the camera's ability. Still, the photos are worth sharing for the rare glimpse at this former alter of exotica.

Digital "Oregon District"

I believe most of these were taken in 1998 with my first digital camera, a Casio QV-11. Back then it was believed that a flash wasn't needed on a digital camera, because it could be fixed later. It shot at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. Today, my LG phonecam shoots at 640 x 480 but lacks the clarity achieved by the Casio in good light.

Chat Attack! (Casio QV-11)

November 1997 Chat Attack Chat Attack was a meeting of volunteer chat hosts of America Online with the people who ran the AOL volunteer program at that time. The meeting was a huge success, inspiring, for a time, a great sense of team work. Also, we volunteers were tapped for ideas from the trenches, that might improve the AOL software overall and the chat experience between AOL members and hosts. We were shown a sneak peek at the new and improved version of the software... AOL 4.0! AOL 4 was a great improvement over previous versions by leaps and bounds, but many of it's promises were technically infeasible at the time and weren't fully realized until many versions later. AOL 9.0 SE finally fully realized and far surpassed the promises meant for AOL 4.0. These were the boom years of the internet. Everything seemed possible, and I got to visit California. Awesome!
